I was very disappointed not to be able to go to the jazz concert last Friday. The advertisement in the paper said that you could buy tickets at the theatre box in Richland Hills any day between 10:00 and 4:00. Since I work from 9:00 to 5:30, the only time I could go to the theatre was during my 45-minute lunch break.

Unfortunately, the theatre is on the other side of the town, and the bus service between my office and Richland Hills is not very good. But if you are lucky, you can make the round trip in 45 minutes. Last Monday. I stood at the bus stop for 15 minutes waiting for the bus, By the time I saw one come around the corner, there was not enough time left to make the trip.

So I gave up and went back to the office. The same thing happened on Tuesday, and again next day. On Thursday, my luck changed. I got on a bus right away and arrived at the theatre in exactly 20 minutes. When I got there, however, I found a long line of people at the box office, I heard one man say he had been waiting in line for over an hour. Realizing I would not have enough time to wait in line. I caught the next bus and headed back across the town.

By Friday I realized my only hope was to make the trip by taxi, it was expensive, but I felt it would be worth it to hear the concert. The trip by taxi only took 10 minutes, but felt like an hour to me. When I got to the theatre, I was relieved to see that nobody was waiting in line. The reason, however, I quickly discovered, was that they had already sold all the tickets.

1.The man learned that there would be a concert last Friday.

A. from the newspaper B. from his friends

C. from one of his work-mates D. over the radio

2.He tried to go to the theatre every day but managed to get there only _______.

A. once B. three times

C. twice D. four times

3.One day the man took _______ to get to the theatre by bus.

A. forty-five minutes B. fifteen minutes

C. over an hour D. just twenty minutes

4.The underlined word “relieved” may best be replaced by ___________.

A. surprised B. puzzled

C. pleased D. sorry

As we drove across town, I prepared my two children for what they were about to see. A lady from our new church was dying of cancer, and I had volunteered to help her with the house-work. “Annie has a tumor(腫瘤) in her head, which has disfigured(損毀…的外形) her face,” I warned.

I struggled for the words to describe Annie’s appearance to my son and daughter. Then I remembered a movie I’d seen with my son. I wanted him to understand that disabled people are like anyone else—their feelings can be hurt, too.

“David, remember the movie Mask about the boy with the facial deformity(畸形)?”

“Yes, Mom. I think I know what to expect.” His tone(語(yǔ)氣) told me it was time to stop mothering him so much.

“What does a tumor look like?” Diane asked me.

I didn’t want to frighten the child, so I prepared her just enough but not too much.

“Her tumor looks like the skin on the inside of your mouth. It sticks out from under her tongue and makes it hard for her to talk. You’ll see it as soon as you meet her, but there’s nothing to be afraid of. Remember, don’t stare.” Diane nodded. I knew she was trying to picture a tumor in her mind.

We entered the living room, where Annie was sitting in her chair. At the sight of my children, Annie’s face brightened. “Oh, I’m so glad you came to visit,” she said toughly.

David walked across the room to Annie’s chair, put his arms around her shoulders and pressed his cheek to her face. Smiling, he looked into her eyes and said, “I’m happy to meet you.” Just when I didn’t think I could be more proud, Diane copied her big brother and gave Annie the precious, accepting hug of a child. My throat tightened with emotion as I saw Annie’s eyes well up with grateful tears.

Walk down the drinks section at the supermarket.Look in the drink cooler in your local convenience store.A new drink is taking up more and more space on the shelves, and that drink is water.Bottled water sales in the US rose to 1.7 billion gallons in 2010 for plastic bottles alone, compared to total sales of only 700 million gallons in 1990. Whereas bottled water was once associated only with the rich and the privileged (特權(quán)階層),it is now regularly drunk by people at all income levels despite the fact that the price of bottled water can be between 240 and 10,000 times higher per gallon than tap water. What accounts for this surprising increase in demand?

Traditionally, people have drunk bottled water for health reasons. The practice of “taking the waters” originated with the Romans, who believed that a person developed a healthy mind by building a healthy body.Across Europe, drinking or bathing in mineral water has been associated with the power to cure various diseases.Health spas at Evian in France and Pellegrino in Italy began bottling water so that their consumers could continue their treatments at home. The consumers in the 21st century are also concerned about health. However,in America, where the habit of drinking bottled water is relatively new,the concern is often more related to the purity or sterilization (消毒) of the water than to its mineral contents.Americans are often worried about the effects of the chemical pollution and other contaminants on the water supply. Many Americans view bottled water as a safe alternative to tap water.

Further reasons for drinking bottled water are its usefulness as an aid to digestion,as a complement to a good meal in a restaurant, and for taste.City tap water is often treated with chlorine (氯) to guard against harmful micro?organisms.Chlorine,as well as metals from pipes and tanks used to distribute and store tap water, can leave behind an unpleasant taste.

1.Which of the following statements is true?

A.Bottled water was once drunk both by the rich and the poor.

B.Bottled water sales have risen, for it’s cheaper than tap water.

2.People prefer bottled water because________.

A.it does good to their health

C.it contains no mineral pollution at all

D.it’s a practice originated with the Romans
