【答案】Dear Jerry,

I am delighted to receive your letter and to know that you are eager to have some information about high school students’ life in China after resuming classes during the pandemic.

As commonly required, our school has strict temperature checking each day for whoever enter the school gates. During the first 4 weeks, It was compulsory for the teachers and students to wear facial masks in class. Recently, however, the rule has been lifted, but still group activities are under restriction. Besides, in the classroom, students are seated at a distance from each other, so we don’t literally have a “desk-mate”, which is why in-class discussion is omitted, too.

Despite the fact that the changes may cause some inconvenience for both teachers and students, I still feel more than excited to study in a real class again. Not only because this traditional way of learning is of higher efficiency, but it shows that Chinese people have the confidence to defeat COVID-19 soon.

Have classes resumed in your country? Please let me know and I am looking forward to your reply.

Yours Sincerely,

Li Hua

【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

African elephants are in trouble. Their numbers have fallen violently from as many as ten million a hundred years ago to as few as 400,000 today. Losses are largely from poaching(偷獵) for the illegal ivory trade, and also because of the smaller living space for elephants, as people open up land for farming and development.

Killing some elephants to help save the species is one suggested strategy for preserving them. Here’s the thinking: Invite rich hunters to pay generous fees to shoot specified numbers of elephants, and use that money as sources for various conservations.

Some people claim that trophy hunting can provide generous financial support for people to conserve and restore wild elephant numbers, protect wildlife from poaching, and to help give local communities a boost in economy. Doing that, the theory goes, poor villagers won’t need to poach elephants to feed their families.

To look into the new business closely, the trophy hunting industry does not provide significant benefits to the communities where it occurs. Across Africa, there are only about 15,000 hunting-related jobs created by the business—a tiny number, especially considering that the six main game-hunting countries alone have a population of nearly 150 million.

Besides that, it is true the total income from trophy hunting is substantial. Take an unnamed area for example, the total income to wild conservancies from trophy hunting, amounted to $165,000. Six years later, this is expected to increase almost tenfold to $1,330,000. Yet after various kinds of processing fees and expenses are reduced, the local communities make an average of only ten cents a hectare (25 cents an acre) from trophy hunting. The return is so small that it justly explains locals’ lack of interest in preserving hunting areas and their continued poaching.

The Grasshopper in Van Gogh Painting

Art conservators (管理員) dream of finding 1 (hide) secrets in the masterpieces they look after. Rarely do they expect to find a dead grasshopper.

Conservators at the Nelson-Atkins museum of art in Kansas City said they discovered the dead insect in one of its star paintings, Vincent van Gogh’s Olive Trees, when it 2 (scan) as part of the research for a catalogue of its French painting collection.

It was spotted by Mary Schafer. She told a local broadcaster that she found it in the work’s lower foreground. “3 (look) at the painting with the microscope, I came across the tiny body of a grasshopper covered in the paint, so it 4 have occurred in the wet paint back in 1889.

“We can connect it to Van Gogh painting outside, so we think of him battling the elements, dealing with the wind, the bugs, and then he’s got to walk back to his studio through the fields. What’s fun is that we can come up with all these stories for 5 the insect landed in the paint.”

Schafer said they were curious to know if the grasshopper could be studied 6 (far) to possibly identify which season Van Gogh painted Olive Trees.

Michael Engel, a professor at the University of Kansas, was approached 7 (examine) the grasshopper further. He discovered that part of the insect’s body was missing and there was no sign of movement in the surrounding paint. In other words, it was already dead 8 it somehow landed on the artist’s wet canvas and could not be used for dating purposes.

Van Gogh painted Olive Trees in 1889, the year after his falling out with his friend Gauguin, 9 may have led to his famous act of self-mutilation in the history of art: cutting off his own ear.

The grasshopper may not help in any art historical research but it has become a talking point for museum visitors, looking closely into the painting to see 10 they can spot the dead insect.

【題目】Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point is) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Optimism and pessimism represent your general attitude toward certain situations or to life in general. And your attitude about life may be more important to living than you think.

A new study suggests that people who are optimistic may live longer than those who are pessimistic. Researchers at Harvard University’s School of Public Health in Boston compared women with “a general expectation that good things will happen” to women who were less optimistic. They found that the optimists had a much lower risk of getting several deadly diseases, including cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease and certain types of infection.

Eric Kim, one of the study leaders, says optimism is connected with healthier behaviors and healthier ways of dealing with difficulty. Optimists tend to take better care of themselves by exercising, eating healthy foods and getting enough sleep.

When compared to the least optimistic women in the study, the optimistic women had:

an almost forty percent lower risk of dying from heart disease, stroke and respiratory disease

a fifty percent lower risk of dying from infection

and a sixteen percent lower risk of dying from cancer

Leslie Ralph, a clinical psychologist and counselor at the University of Arizona in Tucson, has several ideas about how to increase optimism.

She says each night plan to do two or three simple, enjoyable activities the next day, such as watching the sun rise, visiting a friend, dancing to a favorite song or reading a story with your child.

She also suggests that if your day starts badly, simply close your eyes for a moment and take a deep breath. When you open your eyes, imagine your day has started over. It’s like having your own restart button.

Offering praise or support to someone can also improve your own outlook. A smile and “thank you” from another person may help you feel more optimistic.
