【題目】The Farmer, His wife, and the Open Door

Once upon a time, there lived a poor farmer and his wife. One day, having finished their day’s labor and eaten their simple supper, they were sitting by the fire. 【1】 It was blown open by wind.

“Darling, shut the door!” said the man.

“No way, shut it yourself!” said the woman.

“I will not shut it, and you shall not shut it,” said the man, “but let the one who speaks the first word shut it.”

【2】

In the middle of the night they heard a noise, and looking around, they found that a wild dog had entered the room, and that he was busy eating their food. Not a word, however, would either of these silly people say, and the dog, having eaten as much as he wanted, went out of the house.

【3】

When she was out, a barber entered, and said to the husband, “Why are you sitting here all alone?” 【4】 The barber then shaved his head, but still he did not speak; then he shaved off half his beard, but even then the man kept silent. “The man is crazy!” cried the barber, and he quickly escaped out of the house.

At the moment, the wife returned from the shop. 【5】 .

“You spoke the first word,” said the farmer, “so please shut the door.”

A. His words pleased the wife, and so the old couple, well satisfied, went in silence to bed.

B. And then they had a quarrel over who should shut the door.

C. The next morning the woman went shopping by herself.

D. The old couple fell asleep happily at night.

E.The farmer didn’t answer a word.

F.She, seeing her husband in such a strange condition, cried, “Ah! What have you been doing?”

G.The farmer and his wife were stupid.

Yesterday morning, I was surprising to hear that my best friend Allee has been hit by a car and was in hospital. The other day when he was going to cross a street, he was such careful that he didn’t go until he saw the traffic light to turn green. But hardly had he got to the middle of the street while he saw a car suddenly appear on his right-hand side and come towards them. It was too late for Allee to escape. He was hit by the car or was thrown a few meters away. He was sent to the nearest hospital immediately and had operation. When I went to see him, he was out of dangers but still looked pale. I sincere hope he will recover and return to normal as soon as possible.

【題目】Once upon a time, there was a wonderful old man who loved everything on the land —— animals and plants.

One day while walking through the woods, the old man found a cocoon of a butterfly. He took it home. A few days later, a small opening appeared; he sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole. Then it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had gotten as far as it could and it could go no farther. Then the man decided to help the butterfly, so he took a pair of scissors and cut the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then came out easily.

But it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings. The man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and expand to be able to support the body, or they would be smaller. Neither happened! In fact, the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around with a swollen body and shriveled (枯萎)wings. It never was able to fly.

What the man in his kindness and hurry did not understand was that the struggle required for the butterfly to get through the tiny opening was nature’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings so that it would be ready for flight once it achieved its freedom from the cocoon.

Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were allowed to go through our life without any difficulties, it would cripple (無能) us. We would not be as strong as what we could have been. And we could never fly.

【1】The old man cut the cocoon in order to ____.

A. kill the butterfly

B. play with the butterfly

C. make the butterfly come out easily

D. have the butterfly

【2】The reason why the butterfly could not fly is that _____.

A. the old man broke its wings

B. it was too small

C. newly born butterflies can’t fly

D. it came out of its cocoon without enough struggle

【3】What can we know from the passage?

A. That old man was fond of everything except the butterfly.

B. It was the old man that stopped the butterfly flying.

C. The old man realized his mistake.

D. It’s not hard for the butterfly to come out of the cocoon.

【4】What does the author want to tell us by writing the passage?

A .We should help others.

B. Without others' help we can still succeed.

C. Struggles in our life can make us stronger.

D. Butterflies can fly without people’s help.
