Living in a culture that is different from your own can be both an exciting and challenging experience. The following are six cultural differences between China and the US to help promote mutual understanding.

Chinese people do not have the same concept of privacy as Americans do. They talk about topics such as ages, income or marital status, which Americans think is annoying and disturbing.

Family

In China, elders are traditionally treated with great respect while the young are cared for. In America, the goal of the family is to encourage independence, particularly that of the children. Unlike the Chinese, older Americans seldom live with their children.

Friends

Chinese people have different meanings to define friends. Just hanging out together time to time is not friendship. Friendship means lifelong friends who feel it deeply necessary to give each other whatever help might seem required. Americans always call people they meet friends, so the definition of friends is general and different. There are work friends, playing friends, school friends and drinking friends.

Money

As is well known, the Chinese like to save. They are always conservative when they are planning to spend money. It is different in the US, where far fewer families are saving money for emergencies and education than their Chinese counterparts(對(duì)應(yīng)面).

Education

Chinese people value education and career more than Americans, who in turn put more emphasis on good character and faith.

Team VS Individual

Basically China values the community and the US values the individual. If you achieve something in the US, it’s because you are great. While in China, if you achieve something it’s because the team, or family, or company is great. Everything you do gets attributed to the greater whole, while in America individual merits (功績(jī))are celebrated.

1.Which is the most appropriate word to show the first cultural difference?

A. Privacy.B. Income.C. Age.D. Marriage.

2.Which is true according to the passage?

A. American parents seldom live with their children.

B. There is no friendship between American people drinking together.

C. Chinese people are usually generous with money to spend.

D. Americans value good character and faith in terms of education.

3.Which one is similar to the underlined phrase?

A. is attached to B. brings in

C. is promoted to D. results in

How to Become Cleverer? Once a boy came to ask a fisherman how to become cleverer, because his mother always called him “foolish boy”.

“That’s easy,” answered the fisherman. “I know one way to make you become cleverer.”

“Really?”

“Of course. It is said a fish head is good for brain. If you eat one, you’ll become cleverer indeed. Pay only three pounds for one fish head.” The boy paid him three pounds and the fisherman cut off a fish head and handed it to him.

A raw fish head is not good—not even for a hungry boy to eat but the boy ate it up in two gulps.

“Do you feel anything?” asked the fisherman.

“Not in my head,” said the boy.

The boy lay on the ground and thought. “One whole fish costs only two pounds. I had paid him three pounds for the fish head. Why couldn’t I have the whole fish for soup, a head for brain and one pound left over?” He jumped up and shouted at the fisherman. “You thief! While sweet treats can be hard to resist, the World Health Organization(WHO) has set new guidelines for people around the world. The guidelines, released on Wednesday, advise that both adults and children cut back on their sugar intake(攝取量) to stay healthy.

In a statement, Francesco Branca, director of the WHO’s nutrition department, said there is evidence that reducing daily sugar intake reduces the risk of being overweight and tooth decay(腐爛).

The guidelines do not apply to the sugars in fresh fruit and vegetables or those that are naturally present in milk. According to the WHO, there is no reported evidence of negative effects of consuming those sugars. Instead, the new guidelines focus on “added” or “free” sugars. These include sugars that are added to processed foods and drinks such as candy and soft drinks.

Added sugars are sometimes described as “ hidden” sugars because they exist in foods we might not think of as sweets, such as honey and ketchup(番茄醬). Health experts advise that consumers look at ingredients on food packages to help make better-informed decisions.

The WHO recommends that people in the United States, Europe and other Western societies should cut their average sugar intake by about two-thirds, or down to just 10% of their overall calories. For developing countries, where dental care is less advanced, the WHO recommends that sugar intake be reduced to 5%.

Scientist Kieran Clarke, of the University of Oxford, notes that for those people who can’t shake their love for sweets, getting more exercise is a good solution. “If you get enough exercise, you can eat almost anything,” she said “But it’s very hard to avoid large amounts of sugar unless all you’re eating is fruit and vegetables.”

1.What can we learn from the guidelines released by the World Health Organization?

A. The production of candies should be forbidden.

B. There is a connection between sugar intake and bad teeth.

C. Fruit and vegetables contain a lot of sugar.

D. People should cut down on sugar intake for the sake of their health.

2.To what level should people in developing countries cut down their sugar intake, according to the WHO?

A. 10%.B. 15%.C. 5%.D. 30%.

3.We can learn from the text that ________.

A. added sugar isn’t marked on food packages

B. we should drink as little milk as possible as it contains sugar

C. soft drinks don’t contain added sugar

D. the less exercise you do, the fewer sweet things you should eat
