As I was leaving the grocery store this afternoon, I saw a poor family — a mother and her four kid sitting in the cold, it brought back memories from when I was a child. The little girl, about 13, told me he liked my sweater. I said, “thank you.” When I am walking to my car, I started to feel sadly. Put the groceries in my car, I sudden thought the little girl might need a sweater at school. So I went back to find the little girl, take my sweater off but gave it to her. I knew she would get much use out of it than me.

After we meet people it is up to us to make them our friends. Let us stop a moment and consider what really makes a friend. The major qualities like faithfulness, devotion, friendly company, flash through our minds. But it is the large number of very small particular qualities that make up one’s whole character, such as cheerfulness, friendliness, and punctuality (守時). After all, “ to make a friend, be a friend” is not such a big and difficult order. There are particular favorable qualities, which attract others to us, and some elements which do have an effect on people in fundamental psychology(基礎(chǔ)心理學(xué)) or not.
If you are in the presence of a shy person, talking and asking casual (隨意的) questions may bring him out of his shell. Think of what would be most acceptable to the other person, for you to talk, or to listen. Either way the goal is to make yourself pleasant.
Always remember to listen, but listen intelligently. To have anyone “ hang on our words” is the most unnoticeably clever way in the world to please somebody. For a few extremely happy seconds we are the center of attraction, but when it is our turn to be audience, let us remember how we felt as the actor, and let’s be genuinely (真正地) interested in what the other fellow is saying.
Other people will like us, if we like them. If you want friends, keep your mind and heart open to friendship. Be alive to the other person’s world.
1.This passage is mainly about_______.
A. the ways of talking to a shy person
B. some favorable qualities to be a psychologist

People have been painting pictures for at least 30,000 years. The earliest pictures were painted by people who hunted animals. They used to paint pictures of the animals they wanted to catch and kill. Pictures of this kind have been found on the walls of caves in France and Spain. No one knows why they were painted there. Perhaps the painter thought that their pictures would help them to catch these animals. Or perhaps human beings have always wanted to tell stories in pictures.
About 5,000 years ago, the Egyptians and other people in the Near East began to use pictures as a kind of writing. They drew simple pictures or signs to represent things and ideas, and also to represent the sounds of their language. The signs these people used became a kind of alphabet(字母表).
The Egyptians used to record information and to tell stories by putting picture-writing and pictures together. When an important person died, scenes and stories from his life were painted and carved on the walls of the place where he was buried. Some of these pictures are like modern comic-strip (連環(huán)漫畫) stories. It has been said that Egypt is the home of the comic strip. But, for the Egyptians, pictures still had magic power. So they did not try to make their way of writing simple. The ordinary people could not understand it.
By the year 1,000 BC, people who lived in the area around the Mediterranean Sea had developed a simpler system of writing. The signs they used were very easy to write, and there were fewer of them than in the Egyptian system. This was because each sign, or letter, represented only one sound in their language. The Greeks developed this system and formed the letter of the Greek alphabet. The Romans copied the idea, and Roman alphabet is now used all over the world.
These days, we can write down a story, or record information, without using pictures. But we still need pictures of all kinds: drawings, photographs, signs and diagrams. We find them everywhere: in books and newspapers, in the street, and on the walls of the places where we live and work. Pictures help us to understand and remember things more easily, and they can make a story much more interesting.
1.Ancient people in France and Spain painted pictures on walls of caves probably because ______.
A. they loved animals
B. they enjoyed seeing pictures
C. they preferred painting pictures to telling stories
D. they thought pictures helpful
2.The Greek alphabet was simpler than the Egyptian system for all the following reasons EXCEPT that ______.
A. the former was easy to write
B. there were fewer signs in the former
C. the former was easy to pronounce
D. each sign stood for only one sound
3.In the last paragraph, the author thinks that pictures ______.
A. should be made easy to understand
B. are of much use in our life
C. should be made interesting
D. are disappearing from our life
4.The possible title of this article may be ______.
A. Pictures and Writing
B. The Best Way of Writing
C. Home of the Comic-Strip Stories
D. The Earliest Language in the World
