He    38   that it all came from a(n)   39   with his mother that occurred when he was about 2. He had been trying to remove milk from the fridge when he    40   the slippery(光滑的) bottle, its contents running all over the kitchen floor.
When his mother came in,    41   shouting at him or giving him a lecture, she said, "Robert, what a great and wonderful    42   you have made! I have    43   seen such a huge pool of milk. Well, the damage has already been    44  . Would you like to get down and    45   in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?"
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, "Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to    46   everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge(海綿), a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?" He chose the sponge.
His mother then said, "You know, what we have here is a    47   experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two    48   hands. Let's go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can make it." The little boy learned that if he    49   the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful    50  !
This scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn't need to be    51  to make mistakes. Even if the experiment "doesn't   54  ," we usually learn something    55   from it.

Most children, even the youngest of children, are delighted to be around cats and dogs. But these pets carry plenty of germs and allergens(過敏原), prompting researchers to ask: Are cats and dogs really safe for children?
A study finds that, contrary to many parents’ fears, owning cats or dogs does not increase a child’s risk of developing allergies, and in fact, may actually protect them. The study’s lead author, Dr. Dennis Ownby of the Medical College of Georgia, said that even he was “very surprised” by the results. Ownby and colleagues followed more than 470 children from birth to age 6 or 7, comparing those exposed to cats and dogs during their first years of life to those who were not.
By using skin-prick tests for detecting common allergies, the researchers found that, contrary to what many doctors had been taught for years, children who had lived with a pet were not at greater risk.
Even more remarkable, children who had two or more dogs or cats had an even greater reduction, up to 77 percent, in risk of allergies. Researchers suggest this protective effect may be the result of early exposure to lots of bacteria that are carried by dogs and cats. Exposing young children to these bacteria helps “exercise” their immune(免疫的) systems early in life so that they’re better able to resist allergic diseases later.
“There’s something very important in the first years of life when the immune system is developing that we can retrain it away from an allergic response,” said Dr. William Davis.
And while researchers are not encouraging parents to buy dogs or cats just to reduce a child’s allergy risk, they say if a family already has one or more animals, there’s no need to get rid of them.
56.Why do the researchers feel “very surprised” by the results of the study?
A. Because the results are contrary to what they have expected.
B. Because so many families are going to get rid of their cats and dogs.
C. Because parents are so much worried about their children.
D. Because children with animals may develop allergies easily.
57.Compared with children who have pets, those who haven’t ________.
A. will lose the chance to develop immune system
B. may suffer allergic diseases more often
C. will reduce the harm from bacteria
D. are more likely to resist allergic diseases
58..It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A. pets are ill-treated by their owners
B. fewer families would like to own cats and dogs
C. keeping pets is a good way to keep children healthy
D. the results of the study can make families with pets feel at ease
59.The underlined word “it” in the fifth paragraph refers to ________.
A. the early life                       B. an allergic disease
C. immune system                     D. something important
60.What may be the best title of the passage?
A. How to protect your kids from allergies.  B. Your pets may be helping your kids.
C. Bacteria do good to your kids.          D. Advantages of owning pets.

“You must be mad!” said my friends. “Giving up your job now, when there isn't much chance of finding another one, ever!”
But I had already come to my lonely decision. To wake up in the morning with a sense of fear, to force a hasty breakfast down an unwilling throat and then to set off for work with pounding heart and frozen face had become habitual, and I had turned to tranquilizers(鎮(zhèn)定劑) to help me along.
It hadn't always been as bad as this. Ten years before I had managed quite well.
I, in common with most other teachers, am rather selfcritical, and I knew now I was no longer “managing”.My classes were noisy, the children were not learning very much, and my attempts to cope with changing teaching methods produced very little effect. At one time my very presence in the doorway would be enough to ensure a partial silence. Now they give a vague(含糊的) “Hello, Miss”, and carry on. I had run out of enjoyment and enthusiasm. It was time to stop.
Was it all my own failure? In fairness to myself, I don't think it was. I had plenty of ideas, I loved my subject, and I liked children.
I had been idealistic. But the reality I faced was bored children, overstimulated(刺激)by videowatching the night before and tired out by a late bedtime. They were given the wrong food at the wrong time, who came without breakfast to school and then stuffed themselves with gum and chocolates bought on the way; who were “high” with hunger in class and talked restlessly as the cooking smell from the school kitchen came drifting (漂) to all floors.
I had been trying to create the basic conditions in which teaching becomes possible, but I had failed, and no longer had the stomach for the job.
64.The reason why the writer decided to give up her job was probably that .
A.teaching children wasn't challenging
B.she took no pride in her work
C.teaching had become too much for her
D.she disliked the new teaching method
65.“My very presence in the doorway would be enough to ensure a partial silence” means“ ”.
A.I'd very well make some students stop talking simply by standing in the doorway
B.when I came to the doorway, the class would immediately quiet down
C.all the students would become silent on my turning up in the doorway
D.my appearance in the doorway could at least comfort the class
66.The following are all reasons that children couldn't concentrate in class EXCEPT .
A.they were tired out because they went to bed too late
B.they were burdened with too much homework
C.they were not properly fed by their parents
D.they were over excited by videowatching the night before
67.We can infer from the passage that the writer .
A.had no love for children at all
B.never truly enjoyed teaching
C.found it difficult to give up her job
D.felt extremely nervous about each coming day

“It’s a rather strange thing about the flat country," she wrote later. "It takes hold of you, it leaves you perfectly cold.
