Tim Berners-Lee is the man who wrote the software program that led to the foundation of the World Wide Web. Britain played an important part in developing the first generation of computers. The parents of Tim Berners-Lee both worked on one of the earliest commercial(商業(yè))computers and talked about their work at home. As a child he would build models of computers from packaging material. After graduating from Oxford University he went on to the real thing. In the 1980's scientists were already communicating using a primitive version of e-mail. While working at a lab in Switzerland Tim Berners-Lee wrote a program, which let him store these messages. This gave him another idea that he was going to write a program that would let academics(學術(shù)界人士)from across the world share information on a single site. In 1990 he wrote the HTTP and HTML programs, which formed the basis of the World Wide Web.
The next year his programs were placed on to the Internet. Everyone was welcome to use them and improve them if they could. Programs used his codas to work with different operating systems. New things like web browsers and search engines were developed. Between 1991 and 1994 the number of web pages rose from 10 to 100,000.
In 1994 Tim Berners-Lee formed the newly World Wide Web consortium(協(xié)會), or W3C. More than 200 leading companies and labs are represented by W3C. Together they make sure that everyone can participate equally on the Web.“The Web can help people to understand the way that others live and work. It helps us understand the humanity of people”he says.

Farmers might think the idea of growing food for fun sounds strange. But there are some people who do it all the time.
They grow some vegetables because their natural color or shape is pleasing to see. They grow others because scientists have developed new colors or different size for traditional vegetables.
One example is the bell pepper(胡椒).Seed companies sell seeds for several different kinds of bell peppers. One pepper is a weak yellow color when it begins to grow. Then its color changes to white. As it grows, it changes color two more times-to orange, then red.
Another unusual plant is known as the yard-long bean or snake bean.It grows up to one meter in length. It is an important part of the food supply in areas of Asia.
American farmers like it because it is different, yet tastes very much like the green beans they traditionally grow. Each bean has from ten to twenty seeds. The outside or pod can be eaten. Some of the very long beans are green outside but have black-and –white or red seed.
Gourds(葫蘆)are plants that people like to grow because of the many different shapes. They also have many uses. Some round gourds are dried, painted and made into containers.Others have long necks and big bodies. These are dried, cut and made into pour drinking water.
Another kind of gourd is used to make sponges(海綿).When it is fully grown, it is removed from the vine and permitted to dry for a few weeks. Then it is placed in water for a few hours. The outer shell is then removed. The gourd is placed in the sun to dry. When it is fully dry, it is cut into pieces for use as sponges. They have a rough surface. They can be used to clean away dead skin cells, which makes them a popular skin-care product.

讀寫任務(wù),閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞的英語短文。
The elephant and the flyA disciple(信徒), who was disturbed by the fact that his mind was in constant unrest, asked his teacher, “Why are most people's minds restless? What can one do to still the mind? ” The teacher looked at the disciple, smiled and told him a story:
An elephant was standing and picking leaves from a tree.A small fly came, flying and buzzing(嗡嗡叫)near his ear.The elephant waved it away with his long ears. Then the fly came again, and the elephant waved it away once more.
This was repeated several times. Then the elephant asked the fly, “Why are you so restless and noisy? Why can't you stay for a while in one place? ”
The fly answered, “I am attracted to whatever I see, hear or smell. My five senses pull me constantly in all directions and I cannot resist them. What is your secret? How can you stay so calm and still? ”
The elephant stopped eating and said, “My five senses do not rule my attention.Whatever I do, I get immersed in it.Now that I am eating, I am completely absorbed in eating. In this way I can enjoy my food and chew it better.I rule and control my attention, and not the other way around.”
Upon hearing these words, a smile appeared on the disciple's face, “I understand! If my five senses are in control of my mind and attention, then my mind is in constant unrest. If I am in charge of my five senses and attention, then my mind becomes calm.”

第三部分閱讀理解 (共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀短文,從每題所給的四個選項 (A、B、C和D) 中,選出最佳選項.
A
Years of storms had taken their toll on the old windmill(風車). Its wheel, rusted and fallen, lay silent in the lush bluegrass.
I hadn‘t walked across our old farm in fifteen years. Fifteen years ago, rain or shine, I used to walk this path each day to see Greta. She always made me smile, even after my sister and I had just had a big quarrel. I would help Greta with her chores. Then we would enjoy her delicious homemade chocolate cookies and ice cream. Being confined to a wheel chair didn‘t stop Greta from being a great cook.
Greta gave me two of the greatest gifts I‘ve ever received. First, she taught me how to read. She also taught me that when I forgave Sister for our quarrels, it meant I wouldn‘t keep feeling like a victim(受害者). Instead, I would feel sunny.
Mr. Dinking, the local banker, tried to foreclose on Greta‘s house and land after her husband passed away. Thanks to Pa and Uncle Johan, Greta got to keep everything. Pa said that it was the least he could do for someone talented enough to teach me to read!
Soon folks were coming from miles around to buy Greta‘s homemade cakes, pies, breads, cookies, cider, and ice cream. Greta even had me take a big apple pie to Mr. Dinking who became one of her best customers and friends. That‘s just what Greta was. She could turn anyone into a friend!
Greta always said, "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!" No matter how terrible my day started, I always felt sunny walking home from Greta‘s house---even beneath the winter starlight.
I arrived at Greta‘s house today just after sunset. An ambulance had stopped a few feet from her door, its red lights flashing. When I ran into the old house, Greta recognized me right away.
She smiled at me with her unforgettable twinkling blue eyes. She was almost out of breath when she reached out and softly touched my arm. Her last words to me were "Dear, keep walking in sunshine!"
