                                                     Find Which Direction Is South
Do you have a good sense of direction? If not, please take with you a compass. But if you forget to take
a compass, you can still find your way.
It's never a good idea to imagine that the family member who was entrusted (委托) with the job of map-
reading actually knows where the family is. You can tell by the slightly confused load on their faces that
nothing on the ground seems to match the map. Never mind. The shu is shining and it's still morning. If you
don't know the exact time, you can still find out where south is, but you'll need to be patient.
①Find a straight sick and put it in the ground in a place where you can mark its shadow.
②Try to position the stick as vertically (垂直) as you can. You can check this by making a simple plumb
line (鉛錘線) with a piece of string and weight. You haven't got any string? OK, use a thread from your
clothes with a button tied at the end to act as a weight.
③Mark the end of the shadow cast by the stick.
④Wait approximately half an hour and mark the end of the shadow again.
⑤Keep doing this until you have made several marks.
⑥The mark nearest the stick will represent the shortest shadow, which is cast at midday, when the sun
is highest in the sky and pointing to the exact south.
⑦Pick a point in the distance along the line between the shortest shadow and the stick.
⑧That point is south of where you are.
⑨Now you can turn the map, like you did before, and find which way you should be travelling.
1. To find the direction, we ought to be patient probably because _____.
A. it is not easy to find a proper stick
B. it is not easy to position the stick
C. it takes hours to make the marks
D. it takes about half an hour to make the marks
2. The passage would probably be most helpful to _____.
A. those who draw maps
B. those who get lost
C. those who make compasses
D. those who do experiments
3. Which of the following pictures best shows the way of finding the direction of south?
A.  B.
C.  D.
4. The author presents this passage by _____.
A. telling an interesting story
B. describing an activity in a lively way
C. testing an idea by reasoning
D. introducing a practical method

Every culture has a recognized point when a child becomes an adult, when rules must be followed
and tests passed.
In China, although teenagers can get their ID cards at 16, many only see themselves as an adult
when they are 18. In the US, where everyone drives, the main step to the freedom of adult life is
learning to drive.   At 16, American teens take their driving test. When they have their license, they
drive into the grownup world.
" Nobody wants to ride the cheese bus to school," said Eleanor Fulham, 17. She brought the
pressure back to memory, especially for kids from wealthier families. "It's like you're not cool if you
don't have a car," she said.
According to recent research, 41% of 16 to 19yearolds in the US own cars, up from 23% in 1985.
Although, most of these cars are bought by parents, some teens get parttime jobs to help pay.
Not all families can afford cars for their children. In cities with subways and limited parking, some
teenagers don't want them. But in rich suburban areas without subways, and where bicycles are more
for fun than transportation, it is strange for a teenager not to have a car.
But police say 16yearolds have almost three times more accidents than 18 to 19yearolds. This has
made many parents pause before letting their kids drive.
Julie Sussman, of Virginia, decided that her son Chad, 15, will wait until he is 17 to apply for his
learner's permit.
Chad said he has accepted his parents' decision, although it has caused some teasing from his
friends. "They say that I am unlucky," he said, "But I'd rather be alive than driving, and I_don't_really
_trust_my_friends_on_the_road,_either."
In China as more families get cars, more 18yearolds learn to drive. Will this become a big step to
becoming an adult?

1. Which may serve as the best title of the article?
A. Cars Helping You to GrowUp
B. Driving into the GrownUp World
C. Teenagers' Driving in America
D. Recognized Point of Becoming an Adult

2. 16yearold drivers have more accidents possibly because________.
A. they want to show themselves off
B. they are never experienced drivers
C. older people always drive better
D. they never drive carefully on the road

3. Which may NOT be taken into consideration when deciding whether to buy a car?
A. How well off the family is.
B. Whether the kid is old enough.
C. What traffic condition there is around.
D. Whether it's practically needed.

4. When Chad said "I don't really trust my friends…", he meant that________.
A. he might run into his friends if he drove
B. he didn't agree with his friends
C. he might not be safe if his friends drove
D. he was afraid that his friends might well lie to him

5. The passage mainly gives information about ________.
A. an American culture
B. a cultural difference between America and China
C. a change in the Chinese culture
D. the relationship between driving and a person's development

閱讀理解。
Can you imagine that you can save your own life during a heart attack (心臟病發(fā)作) by coughing (咳嗽)?
Let's see how…
A heart attack can happen to anyone. Let's say it's 4:17 p.m. and you're driving home (alone of course)
after an unusually hard day on the job. Not only was the workload (工作負(fù)擔(dān)) extremely heavy, you also had
a disagreement with your boss, and no matter how hard you tried, he just wouldn't see your side of the situation.
You're really upset and the more you think about it, the more nervous you become.
All of a sudden you start experiencing severe pain in your chest that starts to spread out into your arm and
up into your jaw (下巴). You are only about five miles from the hospital nearest your home, unfortunately you
don't know if you'll be able to make it that far.
What can you do? You've been trained in CPR but the guy who taught the course didn't tell you how to
perform it on yourself.
Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seems in order. Without help the
person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel faint (暈眩的) has only about 10 seconds
left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very
powerfully. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and last long, as
when producing sputum (痰) from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every
two seconds without stopping until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep
breaths get oxygen into the lungs (肺) and coughing movements squeeze (擠壓) the heart and keep the blood
circulating.
The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm (節(jié)奏). In this way, heart attack
victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help.
Now, do you understand the whole matter? Tell as many other people as possible about this. It could save
their lives!
1. According to the passage, CPR is most probably something done to _____.
[     ]
A. regain someone's breath and heart beat
B. help someone treat a heart attack by himself
C. teach people how to stay in good state
D. train people how to stay calm when facing dangers
2. According to Paragraph 5, coughing during a heart attack helps _____.
[     ]
A. to relax the heart
B. to get oxygen into the lungs
C. to keep the blood circulating
D. to reduce the pain in the chest
3. We can learn from the passage that _____.
[     ]
A. a long day's work usually results in heart attacks
B. not only the chest aches when one suffers a heart attack
C. people should attend a CPR course to survive heart attacks
D. one should cough loudly immediately one's chest aches
4. In which section of a newspaper can you read this passage?
[     ]
A. Health Care.
B. Advertisement.
C. Family.
D. Teaching.
