科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2011-2012學(xué)年廣西桂林中學(xué)高一下學(xué)期期中考試英語(yǔ)試卷(帶解析) 題型:閱讀理解

If you have a chance to go to Finland, you will probably be surprised to find how “foolish” the Finnish people are.
Take the taxi drivers for example. Taxis in Finland are mostly high-class Benz with a fare(車費(fèi)) of two US dollars a kilometer. You can go anywhere in one, tell the driver to drop you at any place, say that you have some business to attend to, and then walk off without paying your fare. The driver would not show the least sign of anxiety.
The dining rooms in all big hotels not only serve their guests, but also serve outside diners. Hotel guests have their meals free, so they naturally go to the free dining rooms to have their meals. The most they would do to show their good faith is to wave their registration(登記) card to the waiter. With such a loose check, you can easily use any old registration card to take a couple of friends to dine free of charge.
The Finnish workers are paid by the hour. They are very much on their own as soon as they have agreed with the boss on the rate. From then on they just say how many hours they have worked and they will be paid accordingly.
With so many loopholes (漏洞) in everyday life, surely Finland must be a heaven to those who love to take “petty advantages”. But the strange thing is, all the taxi passengers would always come back to pay their fare after they have attended to their business; not a single outsider has ever been found in the free hotel dining rooms. And workers always give an honest account of the exact hours they put in. As the Finns always act on good faith in everything they do, living in such a society has turned everyone into a real “gentleman”.
【小題1】The underlined words in this passage means to “______”。

A.be ready to help others
B.make good use of one’s friends
C.be a little ahead of others
D.gain something at other’s loss
【小題2】Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.While taking a taxi in Finland, you can get off without first paying your fare.
B.In a big hotel in Finland, you can enjoy free meals if you’re living in the hotel.
C.The bosses in Finland pay the employees according to registration of t heir working hours.
D.The workers are always honest with their working hours.
【小題3】We can infer from the passage that ______.
A.the Finnish society is of very high moral (道德) level
B.there are many loopholes in everyday life in Finland
C.in Finland, most taxi drivers will not charge you anything
D.everyone in Finland is like a gentleman, for they have faith in themselves
【小題4】Which of the following is the best title of the passage?
A.Life in Finland
B.A Society with “Foolish” People
C.What a Life
D.Honest accounts of the Finns

College libraries are designed primarily for research and study. To explain its use, let us choose a research topic and follow the step-by-step procedure of looking up the material for the paper.

Suppose your assignment is to write a paper on a novel called The Sun Also Rises by American writer Hemingway. The first step is to go to the main catalog. Many small drawers on the large wooden cabinets are lined up in alphabetical(字母的) order. Each of the drawers contains hundreds of alphabetical ordered cards. These cards are printed references to all material available in the library.Title cards are cataloged by the first word of the book title, leaving out the articles like “a”, “an” and “the”.And then you get the cards for the books you need.On the upper left corner of each card is the call number. This is the numerical code that shows where the book is located in the library. The library has open and closed stacks. If your book is on the open stacks, you can go to the open-stack room, and according to the call number find it out by yourself. There are only about 30,000 books on open stacks, while most of the 800,000 books in our library are kept in closed stacks, which are accessible only to teachers and graduate students.

For undergraduates like you, borrowing books from the closed stacks have to be done with the help of our librarian. In that case, you must fill out a call slip(紙條) for the book, showing the call number, author and title. You can get call slips on tables near the catalog cabinets. You show your call slip together with your library card to a librarian at the information desk.He or she will help you find the book out in the closed stacks.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2012-2013學(xué)年重慶市高三第三次(5月)月考英語(yǔ)試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Very old people do raise moral problems for almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their values—this can't be repeated too often—are not necessarily our values. Physical comfort, cleanness and order are not necessarily the most important things. The social services from time to time find themselves faced with a flat with decaying food covered by small worms (蠕蟲(chóng)), and an old person lying alone in bed, taking no notice of the worms. But is it interfering (妨礙) with personal freedom to insist that they go to live with some of their relatives so that they might be taken better care of? Some social workers, the ones who clear up the worms, think we are in danger of carrying this concept of personal freedom to the point where serious risks are being taken with the health and safety of the old.

Indeed, the old can be easily hurt or harmed. The body is like a car, it needs more mechanical maintenance as it gets older. You can carry this comparison right through to the provision of spare parts. But never forget that such operations are painful experiences, however good the results. And at what point should you stop treating the old body? Is it morally right to try to push off death by pursuing the development of drugs to excite the forgetful old mind and to activate the old body, knowing that it is designed to die? You cannot ask doctors or scientists to decide, because so long as they can see the technical opportunities, they will feel bound to give them a try, on the principle that while there's life, there's hope.

When you talk to the old people, however, you are forced to the conclusion that whether age is happy or unpleasant depends less on money or on health than it does on your ability to have fun.

1.It is implied in Paragraph 1 that______.

A.very old people enjoy living with their relatives

B.social services have nothing to do with very old people

C.very old people would like to live alone so that they can have more personal freedom.

D.very old people are able to keep their rooms very clean

2.Some social workers think that______.

A.health and safety are more important than personal freedom

B.personal freedom is more important than health and safety

C.old people should keep their rooms clean

D.one should not take the risk of dealing with old people

3.In the author's opinion, ______.

A.the human body can't be compared to a car

B.the older a person, the more care he needs

C.too much emphasis has been put on old people's values

D.it is easy to provide spare parts for old people

4.The author thinks that______.

A.medical decisions for old people should be left to the doctors

B.old people can enjoy a happy life only if they are very rich

C.the opinion that we should try every means possible to save old people is doubtful

D.it is always morally right to treat old people and push off death

People believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, you’re wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms (體育館). Here, people are learning on special climbing walls. The climbing wall goes straight up and has small holding places for hands and feet.

How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and a harness (保護(hù)帶) around your chest to hold you. There are ropes (繩索) tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you don’t fall. A beginner’s wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes it’s easy to see the next piece of metal. Sometimes, it’s not. The most difficult part is to control your fear. It’s normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so it’s difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.

Climbing attracts people because it’s good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger.
