1.I moved from Chicago to Brooklyn in July of 2010,just in time to watch my mother die.Our parents were both gone now; I took with me as many things they had left behind as I could.
I was out walking one Saturday later that summer when something caught my eye-a pale green dress.Laid out on the pavement was stuff like earrings,glass candle-holders,books.Hanging on the fence behind were a few pairs of jeans and a green cotton dress.
The woman, the host of the stoop (門廊)sale,looked like she was getting rid of a past she didn't need or want.A dress that was too big for her.A chest of drawers that took up too much space,space she needed,maybe,to heal,recover,or grow.
I wasn't planning on buying anything really,but now I needed to show her that I appreciated her things and I would give them a safe home.Then I had my first stoop sale-I paid her 20dollars for her green cotton dress and her blue candle-holder.

A few weeks ago,I carried my mother's dresses to a friend's stoop.These were her best items,which were once worn by the most important person in my life.For many hours,I watched from across the path people advancing the stoop,some leaving with Mom1S dress.I used to think that her stuff was as forever sacred (神圣的)as my memory of her,I know now that once I love a scarf or shirt too dearly,it needs to find a new home.Even that green dress is long gone by now.

18.Several years ago,I had to replace a receptionist for my unit.Before I advertised for the position,I was approached by another manager,and asked if I would consider a transfer from his staffinstead of opening a new competition.My natural question was to ask who he wanted me to consider and why.
It appeared from his description of this employee,Maria,that she was having a lot of problems performing her duties,and had difficulties with her boss,and did not appear to respond to any attempts he,the manager,had made to settle the issues.Now,after listening to his explanation,I really had severe doubts.What crossed my mind,after this discussion,was that he wanted me to take a problem off his hands.
I told him I would think about it and would let him know the next day.As promised,after   thinking more about this potential performance issue,I decided that I would agree to speak with Maria privately before I made any decision.
And,what I found out during this interview,left me deep in thought.As it tumed out,the  performance issue appeared to result from working for a boss who never extended a good morning.greeting,never gave a word of encouragement,and was constantly changing the work load and routines.The end result was a totally ruined employee who was unconfident,hated to see a new work day start.
I decided to accept her transfer to my unit.What started out as a shy,withdrawn and frightened employee turned out to be one of the most productive and loyal employee that I had eyer worked with.Maria couldn't do enough and was constantly asking for more and for more responsibility.I was more than happy to give her what she needed-praise for work well done,respect as a person,and encouragement for doing well in anything she dealt with.
Sometimes,we are guilty of holding others back from accomplishing or doing,or developing as they should or could. It may be a wise idea that we all look in the mirror, from time to time,to see what we are really like.

3.A strong memory depends on the health and vitality (活力) of your brain. They say that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but when it comes to the brain, scientists have discovered that this old saying simply isn't true.(36)GGive your brain a workout.Memory, like muscular strength, requires you to"use it or lose it".The more you work out your brain, the better you'll be able to process and remember information.(37)FDon't skip the physical exercise. While mental exercise is important for brain health, that doesn't mean you never need to break a sweat.Physical exercise helps your brain stay sharp. It increases oxygen to your brain and reduces the risk for disorders that lead to memory loss.
Get enough sleep. There is a big difference between the amount of sleep you can get by on and the amount you need to function at your best.(38)EKeep stress in check.Stress is one of the brain's worst enemies.Over time, stress destroys brain cells.Studies have also linked stress to memory loss.
Have a laugh.(39)CThat holds true for the brain and the memory,as well as the body.Unlike emotional responses, which are limited to specific areas of the brain, laughter engages multiple regions across the whole brain.(40)A
Just as the body needs fuel,so does the brain. You probably already know that a diet based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains,"healthy"fats and lean protein will provide lots of health benefits, but such a diet can also improve memory. For brain health, though,it's not just what you eat-it's also what you don't eat.

B.Play games with memory.
C.Laughter is the best medicine.
D.But oversleeping is not good for your brain.
