My Forever Valentine 我永遠(yuǎn)的“情人”

Valentine’s Day was the time my father chose to show his love for the special people in his life. Over the years I fondly (天真的) thought   1   him as my “Valentine man”.

My first recollection of the   2   he could bring to Valentine’s Day came when I was six. That morning at the breakfast table I found a card and a gift-wrapped package at my chair. The card was   3   “Love, Dad” and the gift was a ring with a small piece of red glass to   4   my birthstone, a ruby (紅寶石). There is   5   difference between red glass and rubies to a child of six, and I remember   6   that ring with pride that all the cards in the world   7   not surpass (超越).

8   I grew older, the gifts gave   9   to heart-shaped boxes filled with my   10__   chocolate and always included a   11   card signed “Love, Dad”. In those years my thank-you became   12   of a perfunctory (敷衍) response. The cards seemed less   13  , and I took for granted that the Valentine would   14   be there. I had   15   my hopes and dreams in receiving cards and gifts from “significant others” and “Love Dad” just didn’t seem quite   16  .

His final card remains on my desk today. It’s a   17   of how special fathers can be and how important it has been to me over the years to know that I had a father who continued a   18_        of love with simple acts of understanding and an ability to express happiness over the people in his life.

Those things never   19  , nor does the memory of a man who never   20   being my Valentine.

[1]A long red bridge stretches out across water. It runs across the Golden Gate. This is not the entrance to some sacred land, but it is just as magical. The Golden Gate is where San Francisco Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, and at night the scene of the bridge lit up over the water takes your breath away.

[2]Welcome to San Francisco, a place famous for its beautiful parks, hilly streets and lovely beaches. But the bridge is undoubtedly the most well-known symbol of the city. However, despite the difficult conditions, the bridge was built in no more than four years. Its total length is nearly 2 kilometers.

[3]San Francisco ranks first on Lonely Planet’S list of best cities to visit in 2013. According to the world’s largest travel publisher, it came top as a result of its cultural mix.

[4]According to the US 2010 census (人口普查), 21 percent of the city’s population is made up of Chinese people. San Francisco’s Chinatown is the largest outside of Asia and the oldest in North America. Two traditional festivals, the Spring Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival, are the biggest events of the year on the city’s calendar.

[5]If yellow cabs are a key part of New York city life, then the cable car is San Francisco’s equivalent. The first cable car came into public service in 1873, and the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of the city ever since. The cable car network was once damaged by a serious earthquake but, luckily, it has now recovered and provides better views than the subway.

The quality of citizens, the progress of culture, the prosperity of a country, and the advancement of social affairs are all determined by education. The persons who are responsible for achieving this great target are teachers who are being described as “the architect of human spirit”.

It is, by no means, an over-statement that teaching profession is the noblest profession. However, what is shocking is that teachers are losing their status day by day in today’s society. Nowadays, only those who cannot find a job elsewhere have no other choice but to be teachers.

As far as I can remember, when we were students, we had to greet our teachers whenever and wherever we met them. Teachers were trusted by parents and society and were regarded almost as saints (圣人). Nevertheless, in a short span of a decade, these “privileges (特權(quán))” seem to have disappeared like bubbles. Some students treat their teachers as strangers the moment they leave the classroom.

The reasons why teachers’ status is low in the present society are complex (復(fù)雜的). No matter how “sacred” a profession is, there are certainly some black sheep in it. They are the ones who have spoilt the good reputation of teachers.

Another reason is that Eastern traditional virtues and manners are being destroyed. Thus, students no longer pay great respect to their teachers.

It could also be due to the little chance of promotion that teaching profession offers. This directly affects the quality of teachers. In the eyes of the public, teachers are those who graduated with average or even poor results while those who came out with flying colors are always unwilling to teach.

Teachers’ status has some connection with the success of education and education has much to do with the future of the nation and individuals. Therefore, it is our immediate task to upgrade the teachers’ status.

1. In this passage the author mainly talks about ______.

   A. teachers’ quality B. teachers’ education

   C. teachers’ reputation D. teachers’ status

2. How many reasons are mentioned for the falling of teachers’ status in the passage?

   A. Three. B. Four. C. Five. D. Six.

3. The underlined part “come out with flying colors” in the last but one paragraph probably means _______.

   A. prefer color painting B. change jobs often

   C. graduate with honors D. have high intelligence

4. In the author’s opinion, _______.

   A. none of teachers should be respected by students and their parents

   B. it is “the black sheep” of the teachers that have spoilt teachers’ good reputation

   C. students don’t need to gain knowledge from their teachers

   D. people should pay no attention to the teachers’ status being low
