Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons --- for example, economic reasons --- why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my own home town of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate (影響) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt (破壞) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的)and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

1.What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?

A. They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.

B. Most of them are too expensive to preserve.

C. They are more pleasing than modern buildings.

D. Some of them are not attractive.

2.By “move things forward” in the last paragraph, the author probably means“_______”

A. Destroy old buildings

B. Choose new architectural styles

C. Put things in a different place

D. Respect people’s feelings for historical buildings

3.What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To explain why people dislike change.

B. To warn that we could end up living in caves.

C. To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.

D. To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

While it’s wonderful to share a special trip with friends or family, traveling alone is another experience. 1.

1. Meet new people.

People who are traveling alone seem more approachable to others. Before you know it, you could be chatting with some interesting folks at a sidewalk cafe or even joining a group of like-minded people on the beach. 2.

2.Do everything you want and nothing you don’t want.

Have you ever been hesitant to do that half-day at the spa you are eager for because you feel bad leaving your travel partner with nothing to do? 3. If you want to “waste” the day sitting at an outdoor bar drinking a cocktail instead of sightseeing, you won’t have to answer anyone.

34.

If traveling makes you a good, smart person, then traveling alone makes you better and smarter. Taking a trip by yourself might seem frightening. However, once you take the courage and get over your fears, you’ll feel a sense of energy. A successful single vacation can inspire you to try new things in life.

Great service.

For some reason, service at hotels and restaurants seems better when you’re traveling alone. 5. And it’s possible that when you make it known, you could be offered a better room or a free cocktail.

A.The key is to keep an open mind and keep safety in mind.

B.Travelling alone makes you truly listen to your inner thoughts.

C.When you travel alone, you don’t need to please anyone but yourself.

D.Here are four good reasons why you should try it.

E.It is refreshing.

F.Cheering up.

G.People tend to admire those who travel alone.

What is a fair wage? 1. These are some of the questions the United Nations International Labour Organisation(ILO) has recently investigated.

With a global population of over seven billion, is it actually possible to measure an average amount?_ 2._ Using the total wage bill from over seventy countries, they have multiplied the amounts by the number of earners in each country. The economists then tallied up the results and divided them by the total number across the world The result was a world average wage equivalent to $1,490 a month. _3._

This figure might seem very high because they calculated the amount using purchasing power parity dollars, which takes into account the fact that it is cheaper to live in some countries than others. _4._

Calculating an average sum like this might not be a completely fair representation, but these figures do help us to understand how the world is developing, both economically, in the quality of life people are experiencing and their standard of living.

But the result shows that the average wage is still relatively low and there remains a huge difference in levels of affluence around the world. _5._ Is this fair? For many, pay equality still seems very far out of reach.

A. The ILO has now tried to work out the sums.

B. The ILO used statistics from over 70 different countries

C. Why aren't more people in the world offered pay equality?

D. That is approximately $75 a day for a 20-day working month.

E. Some people live on just two dollars a day, while others are earning more than a million dollars a year.

F. When someone works for themselves, what are they called?

G. The data also did not include the huge number of people who appear in poverty statistics or who are self-employed.

Born in 1949,Diana Nyad took an early interest in swimming as a sport and was a Florida State High School swimming champion.Like many young athletes,she had Olympic dreams,but a serious illness kept her from competing in the Games.The disappointment didn't stop her from going forward.Instead,she became interested in marathon swimming.A brilliant athlete,she was well-conditioned for spending long periods of time in the water.As a long-distance swimmer,she would compete against herself and the obstacles  presented by distance, danger, cold, and exhaustion.

When Nyad ended her career as a swimmer,she continued to try new things---travelling the world as a reporter,writing books and giving public speeches about her life.Diana Nyad works to inspire others,just as she did when she swam the waters of the world.
