The power of encouragement is great. You may draw some inspiration from the following story.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a famous 19thcentury poet and artist, was once  26  by an elderly man. The old man had some sketches (素描) and drawings that he  27   Rossetti to look at them and tell him if they were any good, or  28  they at least showed potential(潛在的)talent.
Rossetti looked them  29  carefully. After the first few, he knew that they were worthless, showing not the least sign of artistic talent. But Rossetti was a  30  man, and he told the elderly  31  as gently as possible that the pictures were of little value and showed little talent. He was sorry,  32  he could not 33  to the man.
The visitor was  34  , but seemed to expect Rossetti’s  35   .He then apologized for  36  Rossetti’s time, but would he just  37  a few more drawings—these done by a(n)  38  art student?Rossetti looked over the  39  batch (一批) of sketches and immediately became  40  over the talent they revealed(顯示;透露) .“These,” he said,“Oh, these are good. This young student has great talent. He should be  41  every help and encouragement in his career as an artist. He has a hopeful future if he will work and stick to it.”
Rossetti could see that the old man was  42  moved.“Who is this fine young   artist?” he asked.“Your son?” “No,” said the old man sadly.“It was I  43  painted the pictures forty years ago.  44  I had heard your praise then! For you see, I got discouraged and 45  drawing—too soon.”

One cold night,I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a    26   practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart.I was having    27   handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked I thought seriously about    28    both acting and San Francisco.I had    29  too much of city life.
As 1 walked down the    30    streets under the tall buildings,I felt very small and cold, so I began    31   both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers.Very few people were still out    32   a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my    33  , I heard a sound behind me. I    34 quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me    35   , so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I    36    what the noise had been. It  had been my wallet    37  to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired any more.I ran out of the door and back to where I'd heard the noise.Although I searched the sidewalk    38   for 15 minutes,my wallet was   39 to be found.
Just as 1 was about to quit the    40  , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to   41 .When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?”I thought I was   42 .How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an amused look in his eyes, “Is this   43  you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up something like a wallet.
It was already 3 am. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some    44  of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place    45   people were willing to help each other.

My six-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she were seeing me for the first time.”Grandma, you are an antique(古董),”she said. "You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique."
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out the Webster's Dictionary and read the definition(定義)to Jenny.I explained, "An antique is not only old, it's an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art... piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured,"I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary. "They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. In order to qualify as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old."
"I'm only 67,"I renunded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from rone aunt to another and finally to our family. "It's very old,"I told Jenny.“I try to keep it polished and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques."
There was a picture on the wall purchased at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. "Now  that's an antique," I boasted. "Over 100 years old." Of course it was marked up and scratched and not in very good condition. "Sometimes age does that," I told Jenny. "But the marks are good marks. They show living, being around. That's something to display with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become." It was important that I believed this for my own self-esteem.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn't buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They'd been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They'd lasted through years and years. They could have been tossed away, or ignored. or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “l(fā) don't have any antiques but you," she said. Then her face brightened. "Could I take you to school for show and tell?"
"Only if I fit into your backpack," I answered. And then Jenny's antique lifted her up and embraced her in a hug that would last through the years.
