小題2:答案 C [從后文作同位語的teaching disabled children和對立項a part?time writer for IBM,這里指的不是義務(wù)(duty),努力(effort),任務(wù)(task),而是工作、職業(yè)(job)。]
后句sent three of her stories to a publisher 有所暗示。
interested(=As they were interested);encouraged的邏輯主語應(yīng)是Tracy,而不是出版商;anxiously(憂慮地, 不安地)和seriously(認真地, 真誠地)通常不作句子性副詞用,故不能出現(xiàn)在這個位置上。]
now that既然,表示原因關(guān)系;even though即使,即便,表示轉(zhuǎn)折關(guān)系;just because就是因為,表示因果關(guān)系;except that 除了……
后句“She used to have me speak with my grandmother, who died many years ago.” make up彌補, 虛構(gòu), 縫制, 整理;connect with連接, 聯(lián) 絡(luò);control控制;explain 解釋,說明。]
小題12:答案 A [有時某些事情無緣無故(for no reason)地,而非碰巧(by accident),從遠處(from a distance),作為禮物式(as gifts)地發(fā)生在作者身上。后文中的“Once, she was wondering how to...”
由后文although in a more comfortable home 說明unmoved不妥。
小題20:答案 A [注意與文章前面her writing skill,a part?time writer for IBM,writing stories was simply a personal interest的相一致。

Success is often measured by the ability to overcome  adversity. But,it is often the belief of others that gives us the  courage to try.
J.K.Rowling,author of the Harry Potter book series, began writing at the age of 6.In her biography, she remembers  with great fondness when her good friend Sean, whom she met  in secondary school, became the first person to encourage her   and help build the confidence that one day she would be a very good writer
“He was the first person with whom I really discussed my  serious ambition to be a writer. He was also the only person  who thought I was bound to be a success at it,which meant  much more to me than I ever told him at the time.”
Despite  many  setbacks,Rowling  persevered  in  her writing, particularly fantasy stories. But it wasn’t until 1990 that she first conceived the idea about Harry Potter. As she recalls,it was on a long train journey from London to Manchester that the idea of Harry Potter simply fell into her head.“To my immense frustration (沮喪),I didn’t have a functioning pen with me,and I was too shy to ask anybody if I could borrow one.I think, now, that this was probably a good thing, because I simply sat and thought, for four (delayed train) hours, and all the details bubbled up in my brain, and this scrawny, blackhaired, bespectacled (戴眼鏡的) boy who didn’t know he was a wizard became more and more real to me.”
That same year, her mother passed away after a tenyear battle with  multiple  sclerosis, which  deeply  affected  her writing. She went on to marry and had a daughter, but separated from her husband shortly afterwards.
During this time,Rowling was diagnosed with clinical depression.Unemployed, she completed her first novel in area cafes, where she could get her daughter to fall asleep. After being rejected by 12 publishing houses, the first Harry Potter novel was sold to a small British publishing house.
Now with seven books that have sold nearly 400 million copies in 64 languages,J.K.Rowling is the highest earning novelist in history. And it all began with her commitment to writing that was fostered by the confidence of a friend!

One of the greatest things about growing older is that you get to stay up late. It’s not just your parents who that decision. Your body lets you enjoy dark hours, too.
Resent study has shown that brain changes during teen years make it easier for kids to stay up late. “But it doesn’t mean that you should stay up late just because you can stay up late,” scientists say. Young people who don’t get enough sleep are often late for school, or they miss it completely. And their grades go down. “If you’re sleeping in school, you’re not learning,” says Mary Carskadon who is a sleep researcher.
Lack of sleep is a growing problem in the United States. Schools have been starting earlier in recent years. And with TV, computers, and video games attracting them, people of all ages are sleeping less than their parents or their grandparents did.
Sleep is important because it gives our bodies time to recover from the stress (壓力) of living. Studies show that the adults (成人) who sleep less than 6 hours a night have mote heart problems and die sooner than the adults who sleep 7 to 8 hours a night.
How much sleep do you need? It depends mainly on your age. Babies often sleep for the most of the day. By the time they’re 10 years old, kids need an average of 10 hours a night. As they get older, kids have signs to sleep less. But given the chance in an experiment to sleep as long as they want to, young teenagers have 10 hours of sleep. There are even some indications that teenagers may need more sleep than younger kids.

First Day at School
It was my first day at school in London and I was half-excited and half-frightened. On my way to school I wondered, what questions the other boys would ask me and practiced all the answers: "I am nine years old. I was born here but I haven't lived here since I was two. I was living in Farley. It's about thirty miles away. I came back to London two months ago." I also wondered if it was the rule for boys to fight strangers like me, but I was tall for my age. I hoped they would decide not to risk it.
No one took any notice of me before school. I stood in the center of the playground, expecting someone to say "hello", but no one spoke to me.
My teacher was called Mr. Jones. There were 42 boys in the class, so I didn't stand out there, either, until the first lesson of the afternoon. Mr. Jones was very fond of Charles Dickens, so he asked several boys if they knew Dickens' birthplace, but no one guessed right. A boy called Brian, the biggest in the class, said: "Timbuktu” and Mr. Jones went red in the face. Then he asked me. I said: "Portsmouth” and everyone stared at me because Mr. Jones said I was right. This didn't make me very popular, of course. “He thinks he's clever," I heard Brian say.
After that, we went out to the playground to play football. I was in Brian's team, and he obviously had Dickens in mind because he told me to go in goal. No one ever wanted to be the goalkeeper.
"He's big enough and useless enough;" Brian said when someone asked him why he had chosen me.
As the boy kicked the ball hard along the ground to my right, I threw myself down quickly and saved it. All my team crowded round me. My bare knees were grazed and bleeding. Brian took out a handkerchief and offered it to me.
"Do you want to join my gang (team)?" he said.
At the end of the day, I was no longer a stranger.
