Mozart was a great man born with a given talent. He was writing songs at the age of five and performing before the queen by the time he was six years old.Early on,Mozart realised what his talents were, practiced or honed what he was born to do and used his natural abilities to create amazing pieces of music.
Mozart was not the first to be born with natural talents and he wasn’t the last.We all have them.We only need to discover what they are and use them to the best of our abilities. You have been given amazing gifts that are meant to be shared with the world.Your job is to find out what those talents are and master them.
Finding your natural talents may not be an easy task.Perhaps your parents except fewer wouldn’t approve of(贊成) your artistic ability to paint or sing, because they want you to be a successful doctor or lawyer.Maybe your gift wouldn’t seem to have the ability to bring the kind of wealth you hope. These may be excuses;it’s up to you.Have you ever noticed that when you engage in an activity in which you are naturally talented, you feel active and excited? That’s a sign that these are the things you should do.Discover your brilliance(才華) in life and practice, practice, practice.
Look at the world’s greatest athletes. They practice what they’re naturally good at,and what they love. You don’t see Jordan sitting trying to study DNA.If that was something he was talented at,that’s what he would be doing. But it’s not. He’s a brilliant athlete. He sticks to what he does best and he realises his dream.
There are only two steps to success—discover your brilliance and perfect it.

A new retail phenomenon from Japan which allows customers to walk away with free products is to launch in Britain. From tomorrow, visitors to SampleTrend’s central London store can try anything on its shelves, and all of the products can be taken home without charge.
For an annual membership fee of £60,users are free to enter the shop once a month and help themselves to no less than £250 worth of goods every year. The only ‘catch’ is that shoppers are asked to complete a simple questionnaire about each product they try. Known as ‘try-vertising’,the concept allows manufacturers to test products and receive consumer feedback(反饋)before launching onto the open market. It is already a sensation in Japan and now looks set to transform the fortunes of the embattled UK retail industry. If everything goes well, countries such as Germany and France will give it a try. According to new figures, stores are facing a Christmas crisis with the weakest high street trading for six months. Michael Ghosh, the founder behind SampleTrend, said, “The concept behind SampleTrend is unique in the UK. It allows shoppers the opportunity to walk away with a number of real, full-size products of their choosing without handing over a penny.” The concept of in-store try-vertising is simple but effective. Businesses across all sectors from cosmetic manufacturers to beverage makers, place new products on the shelves at SampleTrend and wait for consumers to try them out.
Customers complete a short 10-point questionnaire about the product. The feedback they provide is used to make any finishing touches before the product is brought officially to market. The SampleTrend store stocks everything from cosmetics, food and drink, and household goods. Ghosh, the former advertising and sales director for Disney Europe, said such feedback may also build brand loyalty from the outset— a particularly appealing prospect for new businesses.
1.The most attractive part of the idea for customers is that_____.
A. they only pay £60 for a life-long membership
B. they can help to make the products better
C. it won’t take much time to finish the questionnaire
D. they can take things home without paying for them
2.The idea of ‘try-vertising’ originates from_____.
A. Germany B. Britain C. Japan D. France
3.The purpose of ‘try-vertising’ is to_____.
A. get feedback for their new products
B. sell more products at Christmas time
C. encourage people to buy more products
D. give customers free products as gifts
4.What does Michael Ghosh think of this business idea?
A. Puzzling. B. Unpractical.
C. Promising. D. Surprising.

There are two main types of non?verbal communication. Body language is the first. Body language is body movements that depend on a person’s attitude or feelings. Body language includes the way people walk, how they stand, and their facial features. In other words, any kind of meaning is shown by a person’s attitude or body movements. For example, when a boy is sad he may drop his head and walk slowly. Or,if a girl is happy, she might run and jump or stand up straight and put her hands in the air. People don’t have to say anything to show how they feel about things. The colour of people’s skin may even show how they feel. For example,if people with light coloured skin get embarrassed, their skin may turn red,or if they are worried, they might get pale. Body language can be voluntary(主動(dòng)的) or involuntary(無意識的).An interesting fact is that blind children will smile when happy even though they have never seen a smile.
The next main type of non?verbal communication is gestures. Gestures are communications like facial expressions, hand signals, eye gazing, and body postures. Examples include smiles, handshakes, waving, and raising certain fingers to say something. For instance,if you saw a friend at a noisy carnival, you might smile and wave at your friend. You might also point at the Ferris wheel if you wanted to meet your friend there. You could do all of these things without saying a word. Another great example is in baseball when the catcher signals to the pitcher the kind of pitch to use for the batter that is up.
1.If a boy passes the final exam he ________.
A.might not raise his head
B.might walk home slowly
C.might run home singing
D.might not stand there straight
2.When someone gets pale he is most likely to be ______.
A.a(chǎn)nxious B.surprised
C.embarrassed D.disappointed
3.Which one of the following is WRONG according to this passage?
A.Body language is mainly expressed by one’s body movements.
B.The blind children can also smile when they are glad.
C.You can also express yourself without saying a word in baseball.
D.Gestures can be shown only by one’s hands.
4.All the following are gestures except ________.
A.hand signals B.coloured skin
C.hand wave D.eye gazing

Would you believe that the tallest bridge in France reaches higher than the Eiffel Tower? Each of the projects mentioned here has set at least one world record for its height, scale or ingenuity(獨(dú)創(chuàng)性).Here are four amazing engineering wonders of the modern world.
Venice,Italy:The Venice Tide Barrier Project will be the largest flood prevention project in the world. The project has been debated in one form or another for over 40 years as a way to protect this historical city-on-the-water for future generations. With Venice slowly sinking, and the water around it slowly rising, and floods always a fear,Italians have known for a long time that something needs to be done. Finally, the Prime Minister of Italy approved the second phase of the plan, including 80 hinged barriers(用鉸鏈連接的壁壘),each approximately 6,500 square feet.

Norway to Britain:The Langeled Pipeline extends(延伸)from Nyhamna,Norway,to Easington in the UK.It is about 1,200 km long and before the completion of the Nord Stream pipeline,it was the longest underwater gas pipeline in the world.Gas is exported(出口)from the Ormen Lange field, situated at a depth of 1,000 metres and located 100 km northwest of the Norwegian coast to Nyhamna. From there the Langeled Pipeline runs to Easington in the UK via the Sleipner Riser Platform in the North Sea.It will eventually supply 20% of Britain’s gas needs.

When I was in college,I was always very passionate(熱情的)about music and I was proud to be a member of our band. However,I almost gave up because of my fear of playing solos(獨(dú)奏).
One day two years ago my director informed me that he wanted me to be the featured soloist in a piece of music.Of course I was terrified, but he encouraged me that everything would be OK,and that he believed me and knew that I could do it.Up until four days before the concert,I could not make it through the solo.I would always seem to get discouraged before I played it.
I decided to ask my director for help thinking that he would tell me that I didn’t have to do it and that he was still proud of me.All he said was“You just have to believe yourself.”I didn’t think trying his advice would hurt,so I started the next morning differently.Instead of wondering how I could mess up,I imagined myself playing through my solo with confidence and I kept on telling myself that I could do it.
The strange thing was...it worked! After that day I played the solo without any mistake. When the big concert came, although I was a little nervous,I knew that I could do this.I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I realized that the only person that was holding me back from being my best, was myself.I believed myself.I thought things would go a little more differently than they had in the past.Of course,I played the solo wonderfully and I gained acclamation from all the audience.

The kids in this village wear dirty, ragged clothes. They sleep beside cows and sheep in huts made of sticks and mud. They have no school.Yet they all can chant the English alphabet, and some can make words.
The key to their success:20 tablet computers(平板電腦) dropped off in their Ethiopian village in February by a U.S.group called One Laptop Per Child.
The goal is to find out whether kids using today’s new technology can teach themselves to read in places where no schools or teachers exist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers analyzing the project data say they’re already amazed.“What I think has already happened is that the kids have already learned more than they would have in one year of kindergarten,”said Matt Keller, who runs the Ethiopia program.
The fastest learner—and the first to turn on one of the tablets—is 8-year-old Kelbesa Negusse. The device’s camera was disabled to save memory, yet within weeks Kelbesa had figured out its workings and made the camera work.He called himself a lion,a marker of accomplishment in Ethiopia.
With his tablet,Kelbesa rearranged the letters HSROE into one of the many English animal names he knows. Then he spelled words on his own.“Seven months ago he didn’t know any English. That’s unbelievable,”said Keller.
The project aims to get kids to a stage called “deep reading,”where they can read to learn. It won’t be in Amharic,Ethiopia’s first language, but in English, which is widely seen as the ticket to higher paying jobs.
1.How does the Ethiopia program benefit the kids in the village?
A.It trains teachers for them.
B.It contributes to their self-study.
C.It helps raise their living standards.
D.It provides funds for building schools.
2.What can we infer from Keller’s words in Paragraph 3?
A.They need more time to analyze data.
B.More children are needed for the research.
C.He is confident about the future of the project.
D.The research should be carried out in kindergartens.
3.It amazed Keller that with the tablet Kelbesa could .
A.learn English words quickly
B.draw pictures of animals
C.write letters to researchers
D.make phone calls to his friends
4.What is the aim of the project?
A.To offer Ethiopians higher paying jobs.
B.To make Amharic widely used in the world.
C.To help Ethiopian kids read to learn in English.
D.To assist Ethiopians in learning their first language.
