A culture’s values can be mirrored by its humor.Humor has been evaluated by many great minds such as Thomas Hobbes, who,in“On Nature”,disliked humor,“Laughter is nothing else but sudden glory arising from sudden thought of feeling far better than others.”He thought humor to be a negative quality of human narrow-mindedness.
However, Mordechai Gordon,Ph. D of Education, insists,“Humor allows us to view the
world from an angle that is amusing rather than serious.”1 agree with Gordon.Learning to look
at the world through humor is important.
In the United States, every four years an election occurs.Without humor as a way to express their feelings, how else would Americans keep from clawing their eyes out and going the
way of lemming? Television shows like“The Daily Show”have become important parts of American culture. They are mothering the masses by metaphorically(隱喻地) airplane-ing politics into our mouths. They make politics fun.
Of course, politics is only one type of humor.Social humor helps people through the twists
and turns of the human condition.American pop culture promotes an unhealthy self image. On the topic of self-image,Hari Kondabolu stands out.He has a joke about the popular musical group“The Pussycat Dolls”,describing their hit song“Don't Cha”as a negative representation of women. He points out an obvious offence in American culture.
A study from Loyola University of Maryland has shown that humor is one determining factor for selecting a mating partner.Amongst other things, mates look for an outstanding funny
bone in a potential partner.
Of course, humor is not always used for good purposes.Humor can be linked to vulgarity
(粗俗)and racism, but, like everything else,it has potential to unite human beings by allowing
us to laugh at ourselves, our failures and our connection with one another.
Though 1ife may seem tough and depressing at times, all I have to do is look in the mirror at my increased wrinkles(皺紋) to know that there is a comedy out there that even Chaplin wasn’t
aware of.
With that in mind, remember to laugh with humanity and sometimes at humanity.

A.was only a way to laugh at others to make oneself feel better

All of us eat every day, but most of us don’t understand nutrition(營(yíng)養(yǎng)). How much do you know about good nutrition? Are the following statements true or false?
1. People who don’t eat meat can stay healthy.
True. As long as people eat enough milk, eggs and meat alternates(替代物), they can get enough protein.
2. Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned vegetables.
False. The difference depends more on how vegetables are prepared than whether they are fresh or canned. Vegetables cooked in too much water can lose a large quantity of vitamins.
3. Food eaten between meals can be just as good for health as food eaten at regular meals.
True. Nutritional value depends on what types of food you eat, not when you eat them. Eating an egg or an orange between meals can contribute to a good diet.
4. Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won’t give you more energy.
True. It’s widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more than the baby needs doesn’t make it function better, just as overfilling your gas tank doesn’t make your car run better.
5. Natural vitamins are better supplements(補(bǔ)充)for the diet than synthetic vitamins.
False. There is no difference. A vitamin has the same properties(性質(zhì))and specific chemical structure whether made in a laboratory or taken from plant or animal parts.
6. Older people need the same amount of vitamins as younger people.
True. Older people need the same quantity of vitamins as younger people although they need fewer calories. Certain illnesses raise the requirements for some vitamins, but that is true for the young as well as the old.
7. Food grown in poor soil is lower in vitamins than food grown in rich sold.
False. The vitamins in our foods are made by the plants themselves. They don’t come from the soil.
However, the minerals in a plant depend on the minerals in the soil.
If you have answered these questions correctly, you can say you know much about food and nutrition by today’s standards. But remember that nutrition is a growing science and that may be aged as new information is obtained.
1.The main purpose of the passage is to .
A. list today’s standards of some food and nutrition
B. introduce what should be eaten and what not
C. explain what is helpful to your health and what is not
D. test our nutrition IQ by judging the problems listed
2.From the surrounding words and sentences we know that the underlined phrase “contribute to” means .
A. help to bring about B. take the place of
C. make room for D. turn to
3.The underlined word “synthetic” most probably means in Chinese.

Dear Mrs. Winthrop,
So my first week at college is over! No lectures this morning so I think I’d email you and let you know what things are going.
I’m glad to say that anything has worked out fine in the dorm. I remember asking for a room as far away from the lifts as possible and they find me a comfortable one second floor. There are two girls from my course here and I plan to make friend with them so we can help each other on the course work. Everyone else seems very nice and warmly here.
Well, I had better to stop now. I’m going to attend mine first lesson this afternoon, for I’ve got some preparation to make, Keep in touch.
Best,
Carol

Failure is part of our life. Somebody has ever achieved great success without lots of failures. One experience left lasting impression on me. I’ve been fond of playing the piano since my childhood. Last year there was a piano competition for teenager in my city and I take part in it. I couldn’t wait to show off. The day finally came. However, when I was on the stage I was very nervous that I made several mistakes while playing. My performance was a completely failure.
It was only after the competition when I realized my failure resulted in my lack of practice. From then on, I devoted more time to play the piano because I finally believe that practice make perfect.
