Women’s roles have changed throughout the world in recent years, but nowhere so obviously as in America .As the roles of women have changed ,so have men’s .In many American homes today ,the husband still carries on his traditional role of breadwinner ,while his homemaker wife is in charge of the home and child—raising. Today many American women will not marry a man who is not willing to share equally in household responsibilities.
The high cost of living has made it necessary for many women to have jobs outside the home ,but women often choose to have jobs in order to use their skills and education or to seek a more fulfilling and interesting life .Many American women enjoy the independence that an outside job and the salary give men and even some women—sometimes are not for women working outside the home ,and in some cases ,a woman might be paid less than a man who performs the same job .American women ,however ,have met challenges(挑戰(zhàn))since pioneer days ,and they continue to work for true equality.

The whole body is covered with skin. The surface of the skin is dead(like the hair and the nails),but it is made from a living layer(層)just under the surface. The outside dead layers wear off(磨損)all the time, with new ones replacing them, and the body forms a totally new skin every three weeks.
The skin protects the body from the outside world and it passes information from the outside. It helps to keep water in the body and to keep the body at the same temperature.Becteria(細(xì)菌)can’t get in through the skin unless it is damaged.
If the weather is cold, the blood vessels(血管)in the skin squeeze down,or contract(收縮),so that as little blood as possible comes near the surface. This means that less warmth is lost to the outside. This makes the skin look pale,or even “blue”.At the same time, the hairs on the skin are pulled upright by tiny muscles.
When it is hot,the blood vessels expand(擴(kuò)大),or get wider again,to allow plenty of blood to run near the surface of the skin. This helps the body to lose heat, and the skin may look red.At the same time, the sweat glands(汗腺)produce more sweat, which cools the skin.
If your skin has ever been numb(麻木的),you will realize how important the feeling from the skin is.Nerves(神經(jīng))in the skin are sensitive(敏感的)to heat and cold, sharpness, hardness and softness, wetness and dryness and pain.If one is not able to feel these things, which can act as warnings,he is likely to be burned, cut or hurt in other ways.
The colour of the skin depends on special colour cells(細(xì)胞).These are just below the top layers of the skin. They are needed as protection from some harmful ray of the sun.The stronger the sun is,the more important it is to have a dark skin.People with pale skins may “tan”(曬黑)in the sun. This happens when the body produces extra colour cells in the skin for protection. In the sun,the skin produces a vitamin(vitamin D)which is needed for strong bones.

A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment? As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in a garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower.
A biodegradable (生物所能分解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and is able to change shape. Over time it can also break down into the soil without giving out any poisonous chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms fertilizers. These feed the seed and help the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away. “We’ve only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time,” said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly, people are constantly throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them. Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief (緩解) for nature , according to the scientists.
“The seed comes out and the flower grows in the pot so you don’t have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it,” said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
What is the purpose of this passage?
A. To tell the popularity of biodegradable cell phones.
B. To persuade the reader to buy the biodegradable cell phone.
C. To discuss the development of phone technology.
D. To introduce an environmentally-friendly cell phone to readers.
People throw away their cell phones most probably because _______.
A.there is something wrong with them
B.no sunflowers can grow out of them
C.they are out of fashion
D.they are becoming cheaper and cheaper
It could be learned from the passage that _________.
A.developing the new type of phone is mainly to protect the environment
B.phone-makers will benefit much more from the new type of phone
C.the new type of phone will certainly be popular with users all over the world
D.the phones that can be recycled are available only in Britain now
What might be the best title for this passage?
A.Sunflower and Phone.                          B.Plant Your Phone.
C.Protect Our Environment.                           D.No Worry about Phone.
Where can we probably find the passage above?
A. In a novel.    B. In a magazine.       C. In a textbook.        D. In a diary

Five thousand years ago, people thought that illnesses were the result of evil living in human bodies. They also believed that gods and superior spirits were punishing people through diseases. The practice of magic and witchcraft (巫術(shù)) was popular among many tribes, and charms (符咒) and images of gods to drive away the evil spirits were often used.
People also started using herbal(草藥的) medicine and by trial and error (反復(fù)試驗(yàn),不斷摸索) learned how to cure stomachaches and fevers. They had a witch doctor in the community. He would treat people with simple herbal medicine and magic. Early medicine was practiced the way north tribal Indians did hundreds of years ago and the way some tribes practice it today.
The ancient Chinese believed that the body was ruled by two forces, which they called “yin” and “yang”. The body would become ill if one force overcame the other and the balance between them was changed. Acupuncture (針刺療法) was the way to bring back the balance between the two.
Also sand painting was an important part of Navaho medicine. The medicine man paints loosely upon the floor of an earth-covered house, where the ceremony takes place, or on a buckskin (鹿皮) or a piece of cloth, by letting the colored sands flow through his fingers with control and skill.
Ancient Mesopotamians believed that diseases come either from an evil spirit or a physical problem, such as worms. The doctor would decide from which source the illness has come from and send the patient either to a herbalist or to a witch doctor.
Egyptians had a very advanced medicine. They would sometimes rely on the god’s power to receive healing, but they also treated illnesses and operated on minor health problems like snake bites. They sucked the blood from the wound and bound the affected limb to stop the poison from spreading.
66. The practice of magic and witchcraft was popular in ancient times because ________ .
A. people could avoid being punished by gods and superior spirits by doing this.
B. people thought they could avoid getting diseases in this way.
C. people believed the evil spirits could be driven away in this way.
D. people often got diseases and this way was very effective.

A. diseases were the result of evil living in human bodies.
B. people would fall ill if the balance in human bodies was disturbed.
C. a medicine man could cure people’s diseases by sand painting.

Friendship can deeply affect the physical and mental health of both men and women. Studies show that people who have no friends or who are lonely, are more likely to die earlier, get sick more often and suffer greater physical wear and tear(折磨)than those who have a support system of friends.
Sometimes, family members may be more likely to give you advice or tell you what you don’t want to hear. It may not be as good as a friend who will listen to you and guide you,but support your decisions anyway. The most important elements about friendship are those who suffer support and do not judge your decisions based on society.
One reason for the link between social support and good health practice seems to be that people who feel cared for by others are less stress-out and are protected against the symptoms(癥狀)of depression and loneliness.
Generally, women benefit most because of how they deal with stress. Women are more social in how they deal with stress than men, while men are more likely to have a“fight or flight”reaction.
Women also tend to have larger, denser social network,in which more people know each other and help each other, while men typically have smaller groups of friends and will rely on their wives or other important people for more support. While all these affect people psychologically(心理上),friendship brings comfort that reduces the ill effects of stress, and the sex difference also contributes to the difference in the length of one’s life time.
63.In the author’s opinion,a real friend should _____.
A.tell you what to do even if you refuse to hear it
B.try to persuade you to change your mind quickly
C.judge your decision according to his/her experience
D.give you advice but respect your own decision
64.Women benefit more from friendship than men because_____.
A.women are always cared for by more people than men
B.women are usually less stress—out when staying with others
C.women are more likely to solve problems with friends’ help
D.women can always keep more long-life friendship than men
65.According to the passage we can infer that _____.
A.it’s good for women to tell men what they should do or not
B.friends are always more important than family members
C.men don’t want to share their problems with many people
D.the trend that women can live longer makes them more relaxed
66.This passage mainly talks about _____.
A.why people should develop friendship
B.when friendship affects people’s health
C.people’s different attitudes towards friendship
D.the friendship which can make people live longer

It’s not easy growing up. Growing up can be a real “pain” for some of us. We are always doing things that someone else makes us do and aren’t allowed to do all the things we like. Sometimes we feel sad, sometimes we are fearful, and sometimes we just don’t understand why we can’t stay young forever. But we should take a look back on all the hardships (苦難) in life with a positive attitude and learn from them. We should realize that all of our growing pains actually turn into growing gains!
Throughout our lives we are going to face many challenges and pains, but we should never let these obstacles keep us from following our dreams. We must overcome every obstacle one small step at a time.
As a young girl, my parents forced me to do so many things that I didn’t like. They made me learn to play the violin and then the piano. At that time I hated music and I also hated them. But looking back now, I am so glad that my parents encouraged me to take music lessons. Music has enriched (豐富) my life in so many ways. I now realize that my parents and teachers wanted me to have a better life than they did themselves.
We are all going to experience growing pains, but they are just part of our life. Think about how we would feel if we had no challenges and lived a life like that. Life would be really boring and meaningless. The future is ours! A little hard work and sweat never hurt anyone! If we realize that these pains are just small bumps (碰撞) on our road to success, we will realize that our growing pains are actually growing gains!
1. What would be the best title for this passage?
A. No pains, no gains
B. Growing pains and gains
C. Growing up is a pain
D. Growing up is easy
2. The underlined word “obstacles” (in Paragraph 2) refers to things that _____.
A. make it easy for you to do sth
B. make it difficult for you to do sth
C. make you happy
D. make you full of energy
3. What does the author now think about what her parents did for her in the past?
A. She is angry with them.
B. She is dissatisfied with them.
C. She is thankful to them.
D. She couldn’t forgive them.
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Growing pains are part of our life.
B. Our growing pains will finally turn into growing gains.
C. We should stop when facing many challenges.
D. Life without challenges is boring and meaningless.
