【題目】[1]When children go to camp, they are on their own, sometimes for the very first time in their lives. They have to decide what to wear, what to eat and which activities to participate in. As a result they develop confidence and independence.
[2]As self-respect develops from learning to be on their own, children continue to try new activities. Also it is possible that they will engage in what they are unfamiliar with. In school, children do not experience success in the same way. Camp can be a school without failure because just having fun makes them a success.
[3]One of the greatest benefits of a camp experience is that children develop social skills. In a camp setting, a good counselor will make sure that every camper is included in the activity and that each child interacts with the others in a positive way. They learn to give and take, and they learn how to work and cooperate. Something as simple as clean-up, is not only there to get the cabin clean, but to promote a team atmosphere of working together which in turn results in friendship.
[4]The obvious benefit of camp is that campers make long lasting friendships. These friendships can often be unique and special because campers are living with each other and see the true personalities. Chi1dren learn to see others from a different viewpoint. Children tend to be accepted for who they are and do not have to be concerned about what they wear, what they are good at and how they look. This is because in a camp setting, respect and caring finally win out over materialistic objectives.
[5]In a word, camp does give children fun, friends and fulfillment.

【題目】At no time in history has there been such a mass(大規(guī)模的) movement of people from the countryside to the city as is happening now. By the year 2030, it’s estimated(估計(jì)) that more than two thirds of the world’s population will be living in cities, twice as many as today. This means that the problems faced by cities today—overcrowding, poor housing, unemployment, poverty(貧窮) and lack of food and water—will be twice as bad, unless we find solutions soon.
Another serious issue is how to provide good transportation for their citizens. Many of the world’s major cities are already struggling with out-of-date transport infrastructures(基本設(shè)施). How can they deal with the additional demands?
London is a good example. Its enlargement was made possible by the invention of the steam engine, which powered the world’s first underground railway. But its transport system are now hopelessly out-of-date and need urgent modernization. London’s future success depends very much on developing better public transport.
Over a million people travel into central London every day from outside the city. They, together with the people who live in London, want a public transport system that is efficient, safe and environmentally friendly. What they often get, however, falls far short of that ideal. Passengers complain about cost and pollution, while businesses worry about the problems their staff have in getting to work on time. Yes, the proportion of London households that own a car grew from just over ten percent in the early 1950s to over sixty percent today.
As the city has become increasingly crowded and polluted, there has been a growing realization that action must be taken soon.

【題目】Does a drink a day keep heart attacks away? Over the past 20years, numerous studies have found that moderate alcohol consumption, say, one or two beers, glasses of wine or cocktails daily helps to prevent coronary heart disease. Last week a report in the New England Journal of Medicine added strong new evidence in support of that theory. More importantly, the work provided the first solid indication of how alcohol works to protect the heart.
In the study, researchers from Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvad Medical School compared the drinking habits of 340 men and women who had suffered recent heart attacks with those of healthy people of the same age and sex. The scientists found that people who sip one to three drinks a day are about half as likely to suffer heart attacks as nondrinkers are. The apparent source of the protection : those who drank alcohol had higher blood levels of high density lipoproteins (脂蛋白),the so called good cholesterol (膽固醇),which is known to prevent heart disease.
As evidence has mounted (增長(zhǎng)),some doctors have begun recommending a daily drink for patients of heart diseases. But most physicians are not ready to recommend a regular happy hour for everyone. The risks of teetotal ling (絕對(duì)戒酒)are nothing compared with the dangers of too much alcohol, including high blood pressure, strokes and liver troubles—not to mention violent behavior and traffic accident. Moreover, some studies suggest that even moderate drinking may increase the incidence of breast and colon cancer. Until there is evidence that the benefits of a daily dose(吸收劑量)of alcohol outweigh the risks, most people won't be able to take a doctor's prescription to the neighborhood bar or liquor store.
【1】 The report mentioned in the first paragraph indicates __________.
A. the way in which alcohol can help the heart
B. that a couple of cocktails daily can help stop heart problems
C. why alcoholic drinks are dangerous to one's health
D. that reports on the advantages of alcohol were misled
【2】 Experiments showed that nondrinkers had __________.
A. larger amounts of good cholesterol
B. smaller amounts of good cholesterol
C. higher blood pressure
D. lower blood pressure
【3】 According to the passage, moderate drinking __________.
A. is recommended by most doctors for heart patients
B. should be allowed on prescription
C. is still not medically advisable
D. is not related to liver problems
【4】 The main theme of this passage is __________.
A. the change in recent drinking habits
B. the connection between cancer and alcohol
C. whether moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers
D. whether alcohol may be good for one's health
