Kids are drawn to smoking for a lot of reasons — to look cool, act older, lose weight, or feel independent, but you can keep your child from getting addicted to tobacco. Here are a few points to keep in mind:
Discuss other topics in a way that doesn’t make your child fear punishment or judgment.
Stress what your child does right rather than wrong. Self-confidence is your child’s best protection against peer (同齡人) pressure.
Encourage your child to take part in activities that rule out smoking, such as sports.
When it comes to the dangers of tobacco use, it’s important to keep talking to your child about it over the years. Even the youngest child can understand that smoking is bad for the body.
Ask your child what he or she finds attractive or not attractive about smoking. Be a patient listener.
Read, watch television, and go to the movies with your child. Compare media images with what happens in reality.
Discuss ways to respond to peer pressure to smoke. Your child may feel confident simply saying “no”. But also offer your child responses such as, “It will make my clothes and breath smell bad.”
Encourage your child to walk away from friends who don’t recognize or respect his or her reasons for not smoking.
Explain how smoking affects the daily life of kids who start doing it. How do they afford the cigarettes? How do they have money to pay for other things they want? How does it affect their friendship?
Set firm rules that forbid smoking from your house and ______: Smokers smell bad, look bad, and feel bad, and it’s bad for everyone’s health.

Life on the Earth is wiped out every 27million years---and we have about 16 million years left until the next extinction, according to scientists.
Research into so-called ‘extinction events’ for our planet over the past 500 million years---twice as long as any previous studies ----has proved that they crop up with metronomic(有節(jié)奏的) regularity .
Scientists from the university of Kansas and the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC are 99 percent confident that there are extinction every 27 million years.
In the 1980s scientists believed that Earth’s regular extinctions could be the result of a distant dark twin of the Sun, called Nemesis.
The theory was that Nemesis crashed through the Oort cloud every 27 million years and sent a shower of comets in our direction.
The Ocrt cloud is a vast belt of dust and ice that is believed to lie around one light year from the Sun and is the origin of many of the comets that pass through our solar system.
But now scientists claim that the regularity of the mass extinctions actually disproves the Nemesis theory because its orbit would have change over time as it interacted with other stars.
“Fossil data, which motivated the idea of Nemesis, now militate against(妨礙) it,” said the researchers.
The last extinctions event, 11 millions years ago, saw 10 percent of the Earth’s inhabitants (居民) wiped out.
This means there is around 16 million years until the next event takes place, although the graph shows that it occasionally the event takes place up to 10 million years early.
Asteroids(小行星) crashing into the Earth are commonly believed to be one of the main reasons behind mass extinctions like that suffered by the dinosaurs ---the Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) extinction (白堊-第三紀(jì)滅絕事件).
The extinction wiped out more than half of all species on the planet clearing the way for mammals to become the dominant species(優(yōu)勢物種) on Earth.
The extinction was caused by a massive asteroid slamming into Earth at Chicxulub in Mexico.
The asteroid, which was around 15 kilometers wide, is believed to have hit Earth with a force one billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.

Believe it or not, a rain check is not a weather report. A rain check is a small piece of paper. When can you get a rain check? Well, if you are going to a ball game or some other open-air activity and it is called off because of rain or some other reason, you may receive a rain check. With it you may go there again without paying.
You may also receive a rain check at a shop. As you know, sometimes when you go to a shop to buy something which is on sale, it is sold out. You may ask the assistant to give you a rain check and with it you can go again next time to buy what you need at the sale price.
Here’s another way to use this word. If someone invites you to go somewhere, you would like to go very much but cannot, you may say “May I have a rain check?” This means, “I will come next time.” But you can never say “May I take a rain check?” when your teacher gives you some homework.

You will probably try harder to get more sleep once you see how much better you feel with even 30 minutes more sleep.
Getting more sleep is sometimes merely a matter of scheduling. In the next couple of weeks, try to get rid of one or two things from your morning and evening routine. If morning is your downfall, shift(轉(zhuǎn)移) some of your morning routines to the night before or putting something off until your break at lunch. If late afternoon and night are your downfalls, do the same.
You don’t really need to watch the news. It’s depressing. If something important happens today, you will find out tomorrow at work. At least skip(略過) the weather. Right after dinner, go to a major search engine, and type in “national weather” and the name of your town. You will see a two-line weather report from the National Weather Service. This will save you several minutes of watching the weather on television.
If reading helps you, take a boring book or magazine to bed with you. Paperbacks(平裝本) are not as heavy and are easier to read in bed.
If you have a partner or roommate, maybe you can take turns with a neck and shoulder massage at night instead of television.
Make sure you are ready for sleep when you go to bed. __________ such as televisions, computers, and video games wake us up. Avoid them for at least an hour before you plan to go to bed.

[1]Freezing weather can mean frostbite(凍傷)and hypothermia(體溫過低)unless a person is prepared. Today we talk about how to stay warm, dry and safe.
[2]Frostbite is damage that happens when skin is exposed to extreme cold for too long.It mainly happens on the hands, feet, nose and ears.If deeper tissue is affected, a person is likely to feel pain every time the area gets cold.Hypothermia is a condition that develops when the body cannot produce as much heat as it:releases.Signs of hypothermia include uncontrollable shaking, very slow breathing and difficulty thinking clearly.
[3] To avoid cold-related injuries, here is a simple way to remember four basic steps to staying warm.Think of COLD—C.O.L.D.

[5]The O stands for overexertion(用力過度).Avoid activities that will make you sweaty.Wet clothes and cold weather are a dangerous combination.
[6] L is for layers.Wearing loose, lightweight clothes, one layer on top of another,is better than wearing a single heavy layer of clothing.
[7]D is for dry.In other words, stay as dry as possible.Pay attention to the places where snow can enter clothing. These include the tops of boots, the necks of coats and the wrist areas of mittens or gloves.
[8] And here are two other things to keep in mind-one for children and    .Eating snow might be fun but it lowers the body’s temperature. And drinking alcohol might make a person feel warm. But what it really does is weaken the body’s ability to hold heat.

閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。
[1] Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want. Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here’s how:
[2] Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
[3] Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
[4] Skim before you read. Look over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improve your comprehension as well.
[5] Review regularly. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.
[6] Develop a good attitude towards tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t worry excessively about a single test.
[7] There are other techniques that might help you with your studying. Improving your studying habits will improve your grades.

We leave London on 15 July, and we’ll be taking a flight to Morocco in northern Africa. We’re going to ride camels through the Sahara Desert. It’s the biggest desert in the world―about the size of the US! I expect it will be very hot, dry and dusty there. We’ll be travelling by camel with local guides, camping in tents and sleeping on the ground. I’ve heard that, in the Sahara, there is no shade during the day, and the stars seem especially brilliant on clear nights. I’ll bring a flashlight with me so that I’ll be able to see in the dark. Altogether, the trip will take six days. That means I’ll have to sit on a camel for almost a week―how uncomfortable! I hope my camel likes me!
