The United States has a new national park. It is the Great Basin. It is the first national park in the western state of Nevada. The new park is in the eastern part of Nevada, near the border(邊界) with Utah. It is far from any city.
An American explorer John Charles Fremont traveled through the area in the early 1800's. He found the land shaped like a bowl. So he named it the Great Basin. It is a land of unusual beauty and sharp differences.
For example, you can climb a mountain covered with green forests, then cool yourself in a field of snow as you arrive at the top. Here and there, sharp rocks push out through the snow. Among the rocks you might see homes of the golden hawk (鷹), a bird that was once in danger of dying out.
You can camp in a campground on the edge of Lehman Caves. These caves are a group of large underground rooms made of limestone (石灰石). You can walk through them for about a kilometer. Before the park opened, the caves were the center of interests for anyone traveling through this area.
The state of Nevada has wanted a national park for more than sixty years. There have always been the opposite ideas from people who believed that a park would harm (損害) mining and agricultural interests. The bill that set up the park, however, promises that mines will remain open, and that sheep and cows will continue to feed on the mountainsides.

Fat and shy,Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports team. “Football, tennis, cricket—anything with a round ball,I was useless,” he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the one always made fun of in school gym classes in Devonshire,England.
It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At first he went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to ride the bike along with a runner friend. Gradually,Saunders set up his mind on building up his body, increasing his speed and strength. At the age of 18,he ran his first marathon.
The following year he met John Ridgway and was hired as an instructor at Ridgway’s school of adventure in Scotland, where he learnt about Ridgway’s cold-water exploits. Greatly interested,Saunders read all he could about North Pole explorers and adventures, then decided that this would be his future.
In 2001,after becoming a skillful skier,Saunders started his first long-distance expedition towards the North Pole. It took unbelievable energy. He suffered frostbite, ran into a polar bear and pushed his body to the limit, pulling his supply-loaded sled up and over rocky rice.
Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski alone to the North Pole, and he’s skied more of the North Pole by himself than any other British man. His old playmates would not believe the change.
Next October,Saunders,27,heads south from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back,a 2900-kilometer journey that has never been completed on skis.

A Little Hero
A group of Italian soldiers led by a captain were advancing slowly toward the position of the enemy. They arrived at a farmhouse, in front of which sat a small boy, cutting a branch of a tree with his knife.
"What are you doing here?" asked the captain. "Why didn't you leave with your family?"
"I don't have any family," said the boy. "I'm an orphan. I used to work for the family that lived here. They've gone, but I stayed in order to see the fighting."
"Have you seen any Austrians pass by here?"
"Not within the last three days."
"Do you think you could climb that tree and tell me whether you see anything of the Austrians in the distance?"
"Sure!"
In a few minutes the boy was at the top of the tree.
"Look straight ahead," cried the captain, "and tell me what you see."
"Two men on horseback - nothing else."
"How far away?"
"About a mile and a half. They're standing still." ….
"They're shooting at me," said the boy. "but don't worry. Let me tell you what's to the left. Well, there's a church and I think I see... "
A third bullet passed, and the boy was seen to fall suddenly from the tree, dead.
"Poor boy!" said the captain, covering the boy's body with a national flag and saying, "He died like a soldier and we must bury him like a soldier."
Soon it was covered with flowers. He gave his life to his country.
