Chinese martial arts(武術(shù)) have quite a long history. They form a necessary part of the Chinese culture and they are a part of the nation's spirit. Not only Chinese people love their martial arts, many foreigners are also crazy about them. Perhaps I'm one of those eager foreigners.

Actually, I've exercised all my life. I used to be a football player and I once loved swimming very much. But I became a Chinese martial arts fan the moment I saw them in a film. So, I decided to take them up while I was studying in Xi'an.

Practicing Chinese martial arts requires a lot of effort. You have to be able to “stand as straight as a pine tree, sit as square as a stone, and move as quickly as gust of wind (一陣風(fēng))”. In addition, it takes a long time for you to realize the deep meaning of the arts. Not all people who practice Chinese martial arts have a deep enough understanding of them. Some regard them only as physical movement; you move here, hit your rival(對手) there … But my coach has tried to make me realize their great underlying(內(nèi)在的) meaning, which has a great deal to do with one's mental state. Gradually, I've come to understand that the martial arts do not only improve my physical condition, but also make me feel more confident in dealing with the world around me. A lot of actions of Chinese martial arts are actually based on meditation(沉思). Many of my American friends have benefited a lot from practicing the arts, mentally and physically.

Now there are quite a lot of martial arts clubs in the United States. American people are willing to spend their free time learning Chinese martial arts. For them, the martial arts are a unique(獨有的) culture as well as a beneficial form of exercise. According to a report, one in every ten Americans once studied or is studying a style of martial arts. I myself am planning to set up a martial arts school in my home country as soon as I complete my study in China.

In a study of the university of Minnesota, twins (some raised together and others who had grown up apart) were tested for a wide range of personality traits (特征).In terms of happiness-     as the ability to enjoy life-twins who are separated soon after birth were much less alike than twins raised together. But when it comes to unhappiness, the twins raised apart-some without contact for as long as 64 years-were as   as those who had grown up together.

Why is unhappiness less influenced by    ? When we are happy, we are more responsive to people and keep up better than when we are feeling sad.

This doesn’t mean, however, that some people are born to be sad and that’s that.Unhappiness may be related to genes, but this inherited trait can be influenced by    choice. You can increase your happiness through your own actions.

In a whole  of experiments by psychologists John Reich and Alex Zautra at Arizona State University, they asked students to select their favorite activities from a list of everyday pleasures-things like going to a movie, talking with friends and playing cards.

Then the researchers  some of the students in the experiment to increase the number of favorite activities the participated in for one month (the participants in the study     as controls (對照組) and did not vary their activity level).Result: Those who did more of the things they enjoyed were happier than those who didn’t.The conclusion, then, is that the pleasure we get from life is    ours to control.

PART FOUR: WRITING

Section A (10Points)

Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.

There are many things you can do to keep friendship strong forever.

Trust is very important in keeping any relationship strong and long lasting. If you trust the person whom you have a good relationship with and the other person also trust you in the same way, then you two have a good relationship.

You can remember important date of your friends such as their birthdays and wish them or give gifts to them on this special days. Many people say that money is the most important thing to consider, but remember friendship is not about money. You can find something small and inexpensive for their gifts or send online cards.

A friend should also always help others even when it is not very convenient. So have a helping hand ready at all times.

Sometimes distance makes relationships even closer. So, if you are far from your friends, there are many ways you can remain in contact(聯(lián)系). You can use email, chat programs, and you can also write a blog and share your daily life activities with your friends.

If there is anything that makes you happy, share it with your friends. Listen to their thoughts as well. If they have achieved something noticeable, congratulate them and celebrate with them.

I have seen good friendships and when there is unhealthy competition between two friends. Though this may not happen in many cases, it is better to keep this idea in mind since it may happen to you.

As far as I have seen and experienced, it will be better not to either lend to or borrow money from your good friend. Of course, we have to do this with friends. But, attention should be paid so that your friendship may not end.

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep; the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said” the phone”. Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual. Because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.

Point 1 The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4:00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?

Point 2 The mobile phone means that we are never alone. “The mobile saved my life,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the A45 between Otley and Skipton. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance(救護(hù)車) to her rescue.

Point 3 The mobile removes our secret. It allows marketing manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at and time of day to ask where they are , where they are going, and how their last meeting went.

Point 4 The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near——but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks!”

Point 5 The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously ( 同時地) on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space-walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access(存取) the Internet, the biggest library on Earth.

1.How do you understand ‘Point 1 —The telephone creates the need to communicate,…’?

A.People don’t communicate without telephone.

B.People communicate because of the creating of the telephone.

C.People communicate more since telephone has been created.

D.People communicate more because of more traffic.

2.Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones?

A.Mobile phones help people deal with the emergency.

B.Mobile phones bring convenience as well little secret to people.

C.Mobile phones are so important and should be encouraged.

D.Mobile phones are part of people’s life.
