Recently, a study was carried out to determine who was the greatest American president. Sixtyfive presidential historians took part in it, and they judged the past fortyfour American leaders based on ten leadership qualities, including public persuasiveness(信服), crisis leadership, management of the economy, moral leadership, and conduct of international relations. The historians also looked at administrative ability(管理能力), relations with Congress, ability to set goals, and the pursuit of equal justice for all. Finally, the experts took into consideration the historical period in which the president lived.
The historians chose Abraham Lincoln as American's greatest president. He had also been named the greatest president in a similar study in 2000. Abraham Lincoln was the president who led the nation through the Civil War in the 1860s, and was able to unite it in the end. He also took the first steps to abolish(廢除) slavery in America.
Edna Medford, a professor of history at Howard University in Washington, D.C., was an adviser on this study and the earlier one. She says Abraham Lincoln is seen to represent the values the nation most honours, such as truthfulness, moderation, and respect for human rights.
The historians put American's first president, George Washington, second on the list, while Franklin D. Roosevelt, Theodore Roosevelt, and Harry S. Truman follow in that order. John F. Kennedy, the country's first Roman Catholic president, is sixth on the list. Like Lincoln, Kennedy was murdered while in office.
Among recent presidents, Ronald Reagan was named the tenth best and Bill Clinton rated fifteenth, while the historians put former president George W. Bush at number thirtysix. His father, George H.W. Bush, did much better, being placed at number eighteen.

A.this is the second time Abraham Lincoln has been chosen as America's greatest president
B.Edna Medford didn't take part in the study conducted in 2000

(1)A
(2)C
(3)B
(4)D
根據(jù)第二段中的“The historians chose Abraham Lincoln as American's greatest president. He had also been named the greatest president in a similar study in 2000.” 根據(jù)第一段中的“…public persuasiveness(信服), crisis leadership, management of the economy, moral leadership, and conduct of international relations…and the pursuit of equal justice for all.”
根據(jù)倒數(shù)第二段中的“George Washington, second on the list…John F. Kennedy…is sixth on the list.”可知,華盛頓排在第二位,肯尼迪排在第六位;根據(jù)最后一段中的“…Bill Clinton rated fifteenth, while the historians put former president George W. Bush at number thirtysix.”
根據(jù)第一段中的“Recently, a study was carried out to determine who was the greatest American president…and they judged the past fortyfour American leaders based on ten leadership qualities…”

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I’ve ever had: Be bold and brave — and mighty forces will come to your aid.
Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.
Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas — even physical strength greater than most of us realize.
Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. “In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,” said Tim. “I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet — and stopped him cold.”
Boldness — a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme—is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.
So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities—and you’ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

D. Failure blocked his way to success.
【2】What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?
A. Swallow more than you can digest.
B. Act slightly above your abilities.
C. Develop more mysterious powers.
D. Learn to make creative decisions.
【3】What can be learned from Paragraph 5?
A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults.
B. Trying without success is meaningless.
C. Repeated failure creates a better life.
D. Boldness can be gained little by little.
【4】What is the author’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to be courageous.
B. To advise people to build up physical power.
C. To tell people the ways to guarantee success.
D. To recommend people to develop more abilities.

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new secret of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly likely that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two—thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive relationship between their cat and dog.
However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while fighting were observed in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals attacking, while a dog doing the same signals giving in.
In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behavior. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk “dog”,and dogs can learn how to talk “cat”.
What's interesting is that both cats and dogs have appeared to develop their intelligence. They can learn to read each other's body signals, suggesting that the two may have more in common than we previously thought. Once familiar with each other's presence and body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom (梳理) each other.
The meaning of this research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets—to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues at work, and even world superpowers. If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.
(1)The underlined word “swimmingly” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to .

(2)Some cats and dogs may fight when .

B.they look away from each other

(3)It is suggested in Paragraph 4 that cats and dogs .
A.have common interests
B.are less different than what we thought
C.have a common body language
D.are less intelligent than what we expected
(4)What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?
A.We should learn to live in harmony.
B.We should know more about animals.
C.We should live in peace with animals.

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don't understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they tend(傾向) to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Old people worry more easily. Most of them plan things in advance, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble; it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents don't like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say “yes” to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you prefer to control your life, you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.
(1)According to the text, young people prefer to __________.
A.ask for advice before they really start to do anything
B.think in the same way as their parents do
C.be very strict with themselves
D.do things without thinking carefully ahead
(2)Why do young people like to have clothes, entertainment and music in their way?
A.Because they want to try on something new and look different from the older.
B.Because they try to get their parents to be proud of them.
C.Because they want to give their parents a big surprise.
D.Because they want to test whether they are cleverer than old people.
(3)According to the text, young people want to make a new culture of their own, because _________.
A.they feel they are cleverer than old people
B.they do not want to get into trouble with their parents
C.they don’t feel they belong to the world of the old people
D.they want to show the new is better than the old
(4)If a young man intends to control his own life, it's better for him to __________.
A.do everything according to his own wish
B.hold himself responsible for everything he does
C.do everything beyond his parents' control
D.do everything the way his parents do
