Tsunami(海嘯)Death Toll to Rise Greatly

A senior UN official has described the Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami as among the worst-ever natural disasters(災(zāi)難).The United Nations'top emergency(緊急事件)relief(救濟)official, Jan Egeland, says the death toll from the December 26 tsunami may rise much higher as more information becomes available from the isolated(孤立的)western coast of Sumatra.Mr.Egeland says relief workers are now focusing on the western coast of northern Sumatra. He says they are just beginning to fully grasp the level of destruction caused by the earthquake and tsunami in that area.“The coast is low.It takes the full blast(沖擊波)of the tsunami which was at its highest and many, many of these villages are gone ,”he said.“There is no trace(蹤跡)left of them. They had hardly roads before. Now they have nothing. The death toll will grow highly on the west coast of Sumatra. What will be the final toll, we will never know. But we may be talking of tens of thousands of further deaths in this area. The town of Meulaboh, nearly 50,000 inhabitants(居民),has perhaps been the most destructed of any town anywhere, even much more than Banda Aceh.”Mr.Egeland describes reaching the isolated parts of Sumatra as a nightmare(噩夢).Mr.Egeland said international response to the disaster has been, in his words “greatly positive”.He said much of the aid is being directed at the water and sanitation sectors(衛(wèi)生設(shè)備)in the worst-hit countries.

A terrifying example of the sea's power saw about 200,000 people die in 12 different countries last week. The devastation (毀壞) was caused when a massive earthquake sent tsunamis (海嘯) smashing into Indian Ocean coastlines.

Communities in Sri Lanka. Indonesia, Thailand, India, Malaysia and East Africa have been destroyed by the monster waves. Whole towns were imply swept aside by the power of the water. Cars, trains and buildings could not survive (幸免), let alone the people who stood in the way.

The earthquake measured 9.0 on the Richter scale (里氏震級) and occurred off the coast of Indonesia. It was recorded as the fifth strongest since 1900.

Scientists said the quake was as powerful as a million of the atomic bombs that were dropped on Japan during World War Ⅱ. “This may be the worst natural disaster in recent history because it is affecting so many heavily populated coastal areas," said Jan Egeland, a UN official.

Because such waves rarely happen in the Indian Ocean, there is no system in place to warn coastal communities they are about to be hit.

Tsunami is Japanese for “harbour wave.” They are usually caused by a sudden rise or fall of part of the Earth's crust (地殼) under the ocean. Tsunamis often happen in oceans and they are most common in the Pacific. Normally a tsunamis includes a series of waves.

Tsunamis can be very long-as much a, 100 kilometres-and be as far as one hour apart. They are able to cross entire oceans without losing much energy. One of the most striking facts about tsunamis is that an earthquake on one side of the Pacific Ocean can cause giant wave, and destruction on the other side.

When the ocean is deep, tsunamis can travel unnoticed at speeds of up to 800 kilometres per hour. They can cross the entire ocean in a day or less.

The wave may only be a few metres, high in the ocean but when it is near the shore and reaches shallow (淺) water, the wave builds up very quickly in height. Witnesses (目擊者) in some areas of Indonesia reported seeing up to 10-metre high waves crash into the shore.

1.We can infer from the passage that fewer people would have died in the South Asian tsunami ________.

[ ]

A.if there had been warning system along the coast

B.if the earthquake had happened off the coast of Thailand

C.if the tsunami had happened in the day time

D.if the tsunami had happened in the deep ocean

2.What surprises people most about the tsunamis is that ________.

[ ]

A.it lasts a long time

B.it travels a long way

C.a(chǎn) tsunamis on one side of the ocean can cause destruction on the other side of the ocean

D.it builds up a high wave

3.Which of the following is NOT true of the South Asian tsunamis?

[ ]

A.It was caused by a serious earthquake off the coast of Indonesia.

B.It was caused by the strongest earthquake in the world.

C.People didn't expect such a strong tsunamis would hit them.

D.It may be the worst natural disaster in recent history.

4.Which of the following is the best title for this article?

[ ]

A.What Is the Tsunami?

B.South Asia Was Hit by the Strongest Earthquake.

C.Mother Nature Displays Anger.

D.A Terrible Disaster.

第三部分 閱讀理解 (共20小題;每小題2分,滿分40分)
閱讀下列短文。從每題所給的四個選項(A、B、C和D)中。選出最佳選項.并在答題卷上將該項填出。
A
My wife passed away a few years ago, and I went through the worst time in my life. I even wanted to kill myself. Just for my kids, I had to continue to live and work as a small town doctor at my medical clinic in Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. Then they asked me to have a family trip.
On our trip, we turned on the TV at the motel and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Seeing it falling down, I said to my kids: "I'm going to Afghanistan". And a few weeks later, International Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in provinces where people had no health care. In these field clinics surrounded by frightening shoots or deadly bombs, we were eventually serving 27,000 patients a month in a very busy schedule. Tired and nervous, I gradually had a sense of achievement, a sense of purpose, and my depression went away.
In the years to follow, I went to Indonesia after the tsunami (海嘯), Pakistan after the earthquakes, Sudan after the civil war, and Iraq after more and more bombs. Each time after disasters one after another, hundreds of people were killed, wounded and many more had to flee. We once set up movable clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees, and it was supposed to hold 13,000 originally. Flu broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and food were also serious problems. "Adventures or not?", I often asked myself.
When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But in reality, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, she went unconscious. I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit and the exciting adventures we would have.
I think about the moment many times during my "adventures". I didn't know how predictive those words would be. But I know that she is still with me.
56. Where has the doctor been in the past few years?
A. Some countries where he could set up clinics.
B. Some African countries where flu broke out.
C. The places where the earthquakes happened.
D. The places that the horrible disasters struck.
57. How would the doctor describe his life after he had worked in Afghanistan?
A. Tired and troublesome.           B. Busy and risky.
C. Meaningful and helpful.          D. Frightening and depressing.
The underlined word "refugees" means people__________
A. who are robbed, killed, or wounded    B. who suffer from flu in movable clinics
C. who like to take adventures          D. who have lost homes because of disasters
59. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The doctor's wife encouraged him to work in foreign countries.
B. What the doctor said to his wife before her death became reality.
C. The doctor's adventures made him understand the love of his wife.
D. With the true love of his wife; the doctor started to change his life.
