Today we talk about a word that is a feeling as well as a place. This word is “home.” Long ago in the 1700s, “home” was used as a verb, 【1】 (mean) “to be guided to a destination.” So, when you home in on something, you get 【2】 (close) to your target. For example, you could say, “Police are homing in on the suspects.” That is also where we get homing pigeons-pigeons that can find 【3】 (they) way home after being released.
But today, “home” is more often used as a noun. And it has a very emotional 【4】 (connect) for American English speakers. You can remember the meaning of the word by the expression “home is 【5】 the heart is.” That expression means home is anywhere you feel love and comfort. It is a place where you belong, and often a place you consider your origin. In other 【6】 (word), “home” is not 【7】 (simple) a building where you live—that’s a house. There is a big difference 【8】 a home and a house.
The writer, Thomas Wolfe, had 【9】 different idea about home. In 1940, his book “You Can’t Go Home Again” 【10】 (publish). Today we use this title to mean that the ideas and feelings that you had as a child often change when you are an adult. So, even if you return to the place where you grew up, time and distance have changed your perspective (觀點(diǎn)).

Walk Out of the Comfort Zone and Try New Things
For most high school students, free periods are useless. From what I have seen, few do homework, instead many are on their phones and talking, making it impossible for those who actually want to do work to complete any. As a senior next year, I think extra periods should be used to take optional subjects.
Our school offers many classes. Now is the time to experiment in different fields of study. We will never know if we are interested or talented in a subject if we don't try it.
In my 8th grade, I was told that I had to take an art class as a graduation requirement; so in the 9th grade I took Studio and Art. One of the projects was to build a clay pot, but I built mine incorrectly, so it broke in the kiln (窯). I found out that I have no artistic ability at all, and now I know for sure that I do not want to be an artist. However, the class was one of my favorites that year. I was able to try new activities and test my ability.
Walk out of our comfort zone and try new things! College is when we should focus on a specific major, but high school is when we have to figure it out.
Half of all college students change their major at some point. By doing that hundreds of dollars are wasted on classes that they would have never needed to take. So use our extra periods to find out what we want to do in college. The classes we choose can impact us in future. Taking optional subjects will enrich our mind. It will also show colleges we are diverse students.
(1)How should we use our extra periods in the author's opinion?
(2)Why does the author think we should experiment in different fields of study?
(3)Why did the clay pot show the author's lack of artistic ability?
(4)According to the author, how will taking optional subjects impact up in the future?

【題目】Dear Customers,
I love slipping into a comfortable chair for a long read-as I relax into the chair; I also relax into the author’s words, stories and ideas. The physical book is so elegant that it disappears into the background and what remains is the author’s world.
Today, we, at Amazon, are excited to announce Mindle, a wireless, portable reading device with instant access to more than 90, 000 books, magazines and newspapers.
We’ve been working on Mindle for more than three years. Our top design goal was for Mindle to
disappear in your hands―to get out of the way-so you can enjoy your reading, also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Mindle is wireless, so whether you’re lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book and have it in less than 60 seconds. No computer is needed-you do your reading directly from the device.
We chose the same wireless technology used in advanced mobile phones. But unlike phones there are no monthly wireless bills, no service or data plans, and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install. We want you to get lost in your reading and not in the technology.
Mindle uses a new kind of display called electronic paper. Sharp and natural with no strong light reading on Mindle is nothing like reading from a computer screen. Mindle weighs only 10. 3 ounces-less than a paperback. but can carry two hundred books.
Enjoy learning about Mindle and many thanks!
