It all starts with a tree.In fact, it starts with several trees.Since the first modern guitars were made in northern Spain over 150 years ago, crafts persons have known the wood to be used is important in making a guitar.

Every guitar is made of several different kinds of wood. Each piece is carefully chosen and then cut to fit the part of the guitar for which it is designed. The most important part of a guitar is the soundboard--the piece of wood with a large hole that lies under the strings(弦,線).Guitar makers are careful to make the soundboard just the right shape and thickness. Then they fix stripes(長(zhǎng)條)of wood across the inside in a special pattern, which helps strengthen the soundboard and improves the tone of the guitar.

Wood for the curvy (彎曲的) sides of the guitar must be soaked (浸濕) in water and bent over a hot iron pipe. When all the pieces of the guitar are ready, they are carefully stuck together with glue.Special woodworking tools are used to shape and smooth the neck of the guitar. The craftsperson must make sure that the neck is perfectly centered over the soundboard.

Then it is time to use varnish(亮光漆).This brings out the beauty of the wood.Varnish also improves the sound of the guitar but too much varnish makes the guitar sound flat and dull.

Finally guitar strings are attached and tightened to make just the right musical tones. Then it’s time to play a song.(273 words)

In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was “Save water. Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC) card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 Yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tones of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.

Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.

“It’s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.

Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse.

Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,” said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.

A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 Yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.

1. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.

B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather paused for soap.

C. If money runs out, there will be no water.

D. Having finished bathing, the student has to pay for it.

2. The underline word “flaw” (Paragraph3) most probably means______.

A. perfection         B. advantage                 C. pity                         D. fault

3. Since the new system has performed, ______ of water can be saved.

A. a quarter                  B. one third                  C. one half                   D. two thirds

4. It can be inferred from the passage that______.

A. the new operation can solve the water crisis.

B. The new operation can raise students’ environmental awareness.

C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.

D. The university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.

5. In which column can you find this passage?

A. People.         B. Society         C. Campus Life.    D. Lifestyle.

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:2014屆廣東省高一上學(xué)期10月月考英語(yǔ)試題 題型:閱讀理解

Lisa was running late. Lisa, 25, had a lot to do at work, plus visitors on the way: her parents were coming in for Thanksgiving from her hometown. But as she hurried down the subway stairs, she started to feel uncomfortably warm. By the time she got to the platform, Lisa felt weak and tired—maybe it hadn’t been a good idea to give blood the night before, she thought. She rested herself against a post close to the tracks.

Several yards away, Frank, 43, and his girlfriend, Jennifer, found a spot close to where the front of the train would stop. They were deep in discussion about a house they were thinking of buying.

But when he heard the scream, followed by someone yelling, “Oh, my God, she fell in!” Frank didn’t hesitate(猶豫). He jumped down to the tracks and ran some 40 feet toward the body lying on the rails. “No! Not you! ”his girlfriend shouted after him.

She was right to be alarmed. By the time Frank reached Lisa, he could feel the tracks shaking and see the light coming. The train was about 20 seconds from the station.

It was hard to lift her. She was just out. But he managed to raise her four feet to the platform(站臺(tái)) so that bystanders could hold her by the legs and drag her away from the edge. That was where Lisa briefly regained consciousness(知覺(jué)), felt herself being pulled along the ground, and saw someone else holding her purse.

Lisa thought she’d been robbed. A woman held her hand and a man gave his shirt to help stop the blood pouring from her head. And she tried to talk but she couldn’t, and that was when she realized how much pain she was in.

Police and fire officials soon arrived, and Frank told the story to an officer. Jennifer said her boyfriend was calm on their 40-minute train ride downtown - just as he had been seconds after the rescue(營(yíng)救), which made her think about her reaction at the time. “I saw the train coming and I was thinking he was going to die,” she explained.

1.What was the most probable cause for Lisa’s weakness?

A. She had run a long way.       B. She felt hot in the subway.

C. She had done a 1ot of work.    D. She had donated blood the night before.

2.Why did Jennifer try to stop her boyfriend?

A. Because they would miss their train.

B. Because he didn’t see the train coming.

C. Because she was sure Lisa was hard to lift.

D. Because she was afraid the train would kill him.

3. How did Frank save Lisa?

A. By lifting her to the platform.     B. By helping her rise to her feet.

C. By pulling her along the ground.   D. By dragging her away from the edge.

4.When did Lisa become conscious again?

A. When the train was leaving.

B. After she was back on the platform.

C. After the police and fire officials came.

D. When a man was cleaning the blood from her head.

5.The passage is intended to _____________

A. warn us of the danger in the subway     B. show us how to save people in the subway

C. tell us about a subway rescue        D. report a traffic accident
