Online games, social-networking Web sites, and chat rooms are empowering and motivating(刺激) for teens and help with their development. When adults look at teens today, they think what they are doing is different and seem to be wasting a lot of time. And those activities seem quite foreign. But when we look closely at what kids are doing, it’s not much more different than what their parents did. They are hanging out with their friends, finding romantic partners, and trying to identify themselves.
Today’s teens are being raised with technologies that allow them to have self-directed learning on their own terms, on their own time, and without the restrictions of a classroom setting. This gives the teens a feeling of freedom. This is very different from how kids learn in school when they are handed a set body of knowledge required to master by their teachers.
Teens were motivated to engage online because they were either driven by interest or friendship. And there are some specific findings according to a research:
One major finding is that there is a generation gap in how parents and teens view the teen's online activities. Adults think the activities draw their attention from school work and are left in the dark about what their teens are doing online. Teens, on the other hand, understand the value of the Internet and are motivated to participate.
Another finding shows that teens are not taking full advantage of the Internet. They are using the social networks to chat and post photos and make friends, which are important to their development, but they are not making use of other existing opportunities to learn about astronomy, foreign languages, and other subjects only a few clicks away.
Teens are also improving their social skills online by learning the basic social and technical skills needed to interact in today's digital world.
Pressure from those of the same age also takes on a new role online. Teens are reporting that they are more motivated by those of their age online with public spaces that allow the teens to interact and provide feedback(反饋) to one another.
While teens are using the Internet for both social and intellectual development, they are also facing significant challenges on how to manage their relationships online.

China has more than 20 million people online, however, forty-two percent say they do not use search engines.Others seek entertainment news, as well as information useful for work or study online. Baidu.com is used by half of those surveyed, compared with a quarter for Go-ogle, the leading search engine in the United States.

Day after day you are glued to your computer screen. You cannot get enough of online games, net shopping or cyber surfing. Your social life gets worse, and so does your health. Chances are that you are addicted to the Internet and you need counseling.
On November 8, an Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD) diagnostic manual(診斷手冊)was approved by a group of psychologists in China, who agreed that Internet addiction is a mental disease. According to a report on Xinhuanet.com, the manual for the first time gives a clear time standard for diagnosing IAD, saying that surfing the Internet for more than six hours a day, not for the purpose of studying or working, and having done so for less than three months, might be a symptom of IAD.
Addiction symptoms vary
Besides the long online time, some other symptoms would also help doctors diagnose IAD patients, such as having a strong desire for the Internet and feeling physical discomfort, becoming easily angry, being unable to concentrate on things or finding it difficult to sleep if unable to get online.
Apart from these conditions, other symptoms are also listed in the manual. If a net surfer cannot get out of the virtual world of Web games, which has already affected his/her capability to study or work, or he/she feels little interest in doing anything but jumping online or is afraid to communicate with others, he/she is also considered to be an IAD sufferer.
According to the World Health Organization, mental disease sufferers have two major characteristics: they bring suffering to both themselves and their families, and their abilities to be involved in social activities are affected.
Mental illness stigma(污名)
However, it has resulted in a backlash(反對)from the public, due to the fact that mental disease is a very sensitive term to Chinese.
Many netizens dropped comments expressing their doubts about the manual, saying that they could not accept they might be suffering from mental illness just because they spent too much time on the Internet.
Experts said there is a misunderstanding of the manual. Explaining that IAD sufferers are not “crazy people”, they call on society at large to change their understanding of mental disease. Mental disease covers a wide range of psychological or behavioral problems, such as depression.
