1.Where would we be without the Internet?We certainly wouldn't be at once messaging someone we met six years ago.We also wouldn't be able to form a sentence using only symbols like J or L.Before the Internet came into being,there was no such thing as"unfriending"someone.
We no longer require homes,bars,offices or cafes to keep in touch with people.We can do it wherever we happen to be.This leads to some questions.When we connect to our devices,are we not connecting from the people around us?Are we hiding behind a screen from the physical world and becoming anti-social in turn?While there is a sense of panic about how the Internet is damaging communication,there are also lots of people who believe that it is actually making our friendships better.For better or worse,here are a few of the ways the Internet is changing the way we communicate.
Online relationships.Online dating becomes cool---it removed the embarrassment of forever-alone sitting at home imaging long walks on the beach and candlelit dinner.According to The New York Times,about 50million people use Tinder every month.Outside of Tinder,online dating has increased rapidly on platforms like RSVP and OKCupid.Gradually,dating online is just like meeting someone at a bar these days.
Everyone is an expert.The blogger vs.journalist debate has been very hot lately.While blogs are seen by their readers as an authentic channel of communication,bloggers'knowledge is often called into question by those,a journalist,for example,who have taken a more traditional route to get where they are.Thanks to the Internet,anyone with a keyboard can say anything they want.On the other hand,online blogs have given rise to voices that may never have been heard otherwise.
Social media.It has made us communicate with a much greater number of people globally that used to only be working on a local level.While this is great when it comes to keeping friendships alive over great distances,it also increases the demands on people to keep a much larger number of relationships going at the same time.Social media is a great tool,but if you find yourself looking through Facebook while you're at a dinner party or hanging out with others,it may be time to reconsider your relationship with the Internet.
No matter what your opinion about whether the Internet has changed communication for worse or better is,there's no doubt that it plays a major role in our lives today.So make sure you keep up with the latest technologies.
The Internet Is Changing Our (71)Communication.
(72)Withoutthe Internet*We wouldn't be messaging someone (73)instantly/immediatelywho we met six years ago.
*Before the (74)existenceof the Internet, there was no such thing as"unfriending"someone.
With the InternetThis leads to several questions.
*When we connect to our devices, are we (75)disconnecting/withdrawingfrom the people around us?
*Are we hiding behind a screen from the physical world and become antisocial in turn?
*Still many people believe that in fact it is (76)improvingour relationships.

Dating online is becoming as (78)commonas meeting someone at a bar these days.
*Everyone is an expert.

5.A Particular Sign That Struck Me     I was driving around downtown one afternoon in the winter making a few deliveries.I was listening
to a band,cruising (漫游)around,and minding my own business…
I came up to a red light and stopped…waited. As I looked over to my left,I saw a young guy
standing there.He was holding a cardboard sign with some writing on it.
As with most major cities, when you're in the heart of downtown,it's pretty common to have
homeless people on every other corner,holding a cardboard sign with something written on them-asking
for money.I suppose after so many years, one can easily get desensitized (不敏感)to this sort of
thing. In general, you see the person, read the sign if it's short enough, and make a decision that you
don't want to go through the trouble of giving them money,or you tell yourself that they don't look like
they're in need of money,or some other decision or thought goes through your mind. There are
hundreds of thoughts and excuses out there…and we've all come up with them before.
I looked at this gentleman, skimmed over the sign, but this time,I stopped. My mind went blank
from all the hustle (忙碌) of the day, and work, and how I had to hurry, and where I had to go next,
and what I was doing that night, and how much money I needed to come up with and so on…The world
stopped for a brief moment.I can't remember what the sign said exactly but it was something like:
"Need money/food,have stomach cancer,homeless,anything helps.God bless."
The light turned green, traffic moved forward, and I went with it.About a block or two away,my
heart had simply sunk for this guy.I knew I probably couldn't really help him, but I had to see if nothing
else, maybe I could buy him lunch. So I turned around to go back and ask him if I could buy him lunch,
talk to him and hear his story.
It took me about five minutes to get looped (繞圈) around and back on to the same street where I
had seen him.It was just five minutes---but he was gone.
