Do you have trouble getting started in the morning? Do you have problems learning early in the day? If you do, you are not alone, __1._ They learn better at night than they do in the morning.
To investigate when cockroaches(蟑螂) learn best, researchers at Vanderbill University tested the insects for which odor(peppermint 薄荷 or vanilla 香草) they preferred. Most cockroaches preferred the smell of vanilla to that of peppermint at all times. _2._ Therefore, the scientists trained the cockroaches to prefer the peppermint smell by rewarding the insects with a taste of sugar water when they approached a peppermint smell. _3.__
When the cockroaches were trained at night, they remembered the new associations(peppermint=sugar water; vanilla=salt water) for up to 48 hours. However, if the cockroaches were trained in the morning, they quickly forgot which smell went with which water. __4._
So, cockroaches learn better at night than they do in the morning. _5._ Because of this, it is likely that information they gather at night will be more useful to them. These experiments provide some clues about the interactions between body rhythms, learning and memory.
A.When these insects moved toward a vanilla smell, on the other hand, they were punished with a taste of salt.
B.This result thus shows that the time when they were trained decided the effect of their learning.
C.They are often more active and tend to search for food during the night.
D.They were also found to like sugar water, but not salt water.
E.Cockroaches have the same problem!
F.But they prefer warm conditions found within buildings.
G.Pest species adapt easily to their environment.

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying.__ 1.__ However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water.By adopting a brace(支撐) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact(撞擊力).As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle,so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the “ten and two” position.
Undo your seatbelt.__ 2._ Unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first.Forget the cellphone call.Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
__3._ Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window.A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water,so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window,or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot.It may feel counter?intuitive(有悖常理的) to let water into the car.__ 4._
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival.__ 5.__ While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
A.Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
B.Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
C.It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
D.Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.
E. In conclusion,if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
F.This is the first thing to attend to,yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.

London has become a cycle friendly zone after the launch of a new bike hire scheme. It has been designed to encourage more people to cycle in and around central London.
So how does it work? First you have to sign up to the scheme to be sent a key. The key will unlock one of the bikes, which are kept at docking stations in and around central London. You have to pay an access fee for the key and then you pay as you go, for the length of time you use the bike.
Transport for London, which runs the scheme, is hoping to have 6,000 bikes and 400 docking stations in place by the end of the year. The new hire system is hoping to ease congestion (擁擠 ) in London and is expected to create up t0 40 ,000 extra cycle trips a day into the city centre. London Mayor Boris Johnston launched the scheme and said London had been 6ifilled with thousands of gleaming machines that will transform the look and feel of our streets and become as commonplace on our roads as black cabs and red buses".
However, there have been a few problems since the scheme was launched last Friday. On the first day some people found they couldn't dock their bike properly and their usage of the bike had not registered. Transport for London did admit they had been expecting a few "teething problems" and have said they wouldn't charge for the first day as a "gesture of goodwill". Some other people have criticized the lack of docking stations and locks for the bikes as well as the price it costs to hire the bicycles.
Despite the comments, the green-thinking London Mayor still seems very positive about things, saying, "My campaign for the capital to become the greatest big cycling city in the world has taken a big pedal-powered push forwards. "

Comera is the only place in the world which has a whistle(口哨)language. We do not know how and why it began because we do not know the complete history of the island. But we can certainly imagine the reasons for the beginning of the whistle language. There are many deep valleys on the island. A person on one side of valley cannot easily shout to a person on the other side. But he can whistle and be heard from four miles away, and the record is seven miles. The people who live on the island usually have good teeth, and this helps them to whistle well. They must also have good ears so that they can hear other whistlers.
We can understand why the whistle language continues. It is very useful on the island, and quite easy to learn. When somebody is hurt or ill, the whistle language takes the place of the telephone. If the sick person is a long way from the town, boys and men pass the news from one to another. A boy guarding cattle on a hillside whistles to a man fishing from his boat. The last one is able to describe the trouble fully and exactly to the doctor in town. People help each other in the same way when a car breaks or a cow is lost.
The whistle language is hundreds of years old, and probably it will continue to live for hundreds of years more. Radio and TV often kill the special ways of speaking in the different parts of a country. But on Comera island you are nobody if you cannot whistle. Perhaps soon after TV arrives on the island, the people there will be whistling the news and other facts and opinions.

A. others will phone the doctor in town
B. the whistle language will pass the news to the doctor

2. From the passage we know radio and TV at that time.
A. killed the special ways of speaking
B. whistled all the news and opinions
C. helped Comera people to communicate
D. did not appear on Comera island yet
3. Comera island is special in that .
A. it attracts visitors every year
B. no visitors have ever been there
C. people there have special ears to hear whistles
D. people there use the whistle language to communicate with each other
4. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. It is not easy for a person to live on Comera island if he cannot whistle.
B. The whistle language can only be found on Comera island.
C. The whistle language has been used for hundreds of years on the island, but will not be used any longer.
D. The record shows that one best whistler can be heard by others seven miles away.
