As a young boy my family was very poor. I would often help do something for the neighbors to a little pocket money.

One day I on the door of an elderly woman and asked if she needed me to clean the yard. She asked why I was not in and I showed her my worn coat, which no longer kept me warm. She me to work in the yard. When I finished, she looked at me and said, “I suppose you want to be now.” She then took out a jar filled with dollar bills and said, “I’m glad you’ve done a job today but that is not something you should be doing again. I want you to new clothes and get back to school. I also want you to come back to me with your report card and I will you when I see you have worked hard and have some good . Now reach out your little hands and take out as much as you can.”

I put my hands in the jar and grabbed so much money that it was for me to buy what I badly needed. Later, I returned several times to see the woman and she did just as she . She looked at my report card and gave me a handful of dollars and some delicious food every time showed her that I had an “A”.

I was twelve years old when I moved from that neighborhood. I will never forget the huge this wonderful lady made over my life with her . This is something I hope to do myself in this lifetime over and over again.

An absolute description of the threat hanging over the world’s mammals, reptiles, amphibians(不如、爬行、兩棲動物) and other life forms has been published by the well-known scientific journal, Nature. A special analysis carried out by the journal indicates that an astonishing 41% of all amphibians on the planet now face extinction while 26% of mammal species and 13% of birds are similarly threatened.

Many species are already critically endangered and lose to extinction, including the Sumatran elephant, Amur leopard and mountain gorilla. But also in danger of vanishing for the wild, it now appears, are animals that are currently rated as merely being endangered.

In each case, the finger of blame points directly at human activites The continuing spread of agriculture is destroying million of hectares of wild habitats(棲息地)every year, leaving animals without homes, while the introduction of newly-come species, often helped by humans, is also damaging native populations. At the same time, pollution and overfishing are destroying ocean ecosystems.

“Habitat destruction, pollution or overfishing either skill off wild creatures and plants or leaves them badly weakened,” said Derek Tittensor, an ocean ecologist at the World Conservation Monitoring Centre in Cambridge. “The trouble is that in coming decades, the additional threat of worsening climate change will become more and more common and could then kill off these survivors.”

The problem, according to Nature, is worsened because of the huge gaps in scientists knowledge about the planet’s biodiversity. Evaluations of the total number of species of animals and plants alive vary from 2 million to 50 million. In addition, evaluations of current rates of species’ disappearances vary from 500 to 36, 000 a year. “That is the real problem we face,” added Tittensor. “The scale of uncertainty is huge.”

In the end, however, the data indicate that the world is heading cruelty towards a mass extinction-which is defined as one involving a loss of 75% of species or more. This could arrive in less than a hundred years or could take a thousand, depending on extinction rates.

1.What’s the main idea of the first two paragraphs?

A. Figures about some wild animals are astonishing.

B. “Nature” is the famous journal around the world.

2.The direct reason for the extinction of some species is _____.

A. continuous appearance of new species

B. destructive activities of human beings

C. more and more homeless animals

D. the great change of ocean ecosystem

3.From paragraph 4 we know that another future threat is ______.

A. destruction of habitats

B. overfishing and pollution

C. the worsening climate change

D. killing off wild creatures and plants

4.What is the real problem we are facing now according to paragraph 5?

A. The killing of wild creatures and cutting of trees.

B. The global warming caused by human beings.

C. The destruction of ocean ecosystem by pollution.

D. Evaluation of current rates of species’ disappearances.

5.What does “This” in the last sentence refer to _____?

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and that they seldom give their children a free hand.

It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young. For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected. When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.

Young people often make their parents angry with their choice in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.

Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say, “Yes” to what you do. All you want is to be felt alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control. If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

1.________are to blame for the quarrels between parents and their children according to this passage.

A. Only parents

B. Young people

C. Both parents and their children

D. Neither parents nor their children

2.According to the passage, young people prefer to _________.

A. do things without thinking carefully ahead.

B. ask for advice before they really start to do anything.

C. think in the same way as their parents do.

D. be very strict with themselves

3.According to the passage, young people want to make a new culture of their own because________.

A. they don’t feel they belong to the world of the older people.

B. they do not want to get into trouble.

C. they feel they are as clever as old people.

D. they want to show they have grown up.

4.The underlined word “this” in the third paragraph stands for _______.

A. the young people’s choice

B. their being accepted by their parents

C. developing a new culture of their own

D. their parents’ dislike of their choice

5.If a young man intends to control his own life, it’s better for him to _______.

A. do everything according to his own wish.

B. be responsible for what he does

C. do everything beyond his parents’ control

D. do everything the way his parents do.

Thirteen vehicles lined up last March to race across the Mojave Desert, seeking a million in prize money. To win, they had to finish the 142-mile race in less than 10 hours. Teams and watchers knew there might be no winner at all, because these vehicles were missing a key part -drivers.

DARPA, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, organized the race as part of a push to develop robotic vehicles for future battlefields. But the Grand Challenge, as it was called, just proved how difficult it is to get a car to speed across an unfamiliar desert without human guidance. One had its brake lock up in the starting area. Another began by throwing itself onto a wall. Another got tied up by bushes near the road after 1.9 miles.

One turned upside down. One took off in entirely the wrong direction and had to be disabled by remote control. One went a little more than a mile and rushed into a fence; another managed to go for six miles but stuck on a rock. The “winner,” if there was any; reached 7.8 miles before it ran into a long, narrow hole, and the front wheels caught on fire.

“You get a lot of respect for natural abilities of the living things,” says Reinhold Behringer, who helped design two of the car-size vehicles for a company called Sci-Autonics. “Even ants can do all these tasks effortlessly . It’s very hard for us to put these abilities into our machines.”

The robotic vehicles, though with necessary modern equipment such as advanced computers and GPS guidance, had trouble figuring out fast enough the blocks ahead that a two-year-old human recognizes immediately, Sure, that very young child, who has just only learned to walk, may not think to wipe apple juice off her face, but she already knows that when there’s a cookie in the kitchen she has to climb up the table, and that when she gets to the cookie it will taste good. She is more advanced, even months old, than any machine humans have designed.

1.Watchers doubted if any of the vehicles could finish the race because .

A.they did not have any human guidance

B.the road was not familiar to the drivers

C.the distance was too long for the vehicles

D.the prize money was unattractive to the drivers

2.DARPA organized the race in order to .

A.raise money for producing more robotic vehicles

B.push the development of vehicle industry

C.train more people to drive in the desert

D.improve the vehicles for future wars

3.From the passage we know “robotic vehicles” are a kind of machines that .

A.can do effortlessly whatever tasks living thing can

B.can take part in a race across 142 miles with a time limit

C.can show off their ability to turn themselves upside down

D.can move from place to place without being driven by human beings

4.In the race, the greatest distance one robotic vehicle covered was .

A.a(chǎn)bout eight miles B.six miles

C.a(chǎn)lmost two miles D.a(chǎn)bout one mile

5.In the last paragraph, the writer implies that there is a long way to go .

A.for a robotic vehicle to finish a 142-mile race without any difficulties

B.for a little child who has just learned to walk to reach the cookie on the table

科目:高中英語 來源:2014-2015學(xué)年福建晉江市高二上期末英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Who hasn't found themselves reaching for the closest food available when they're tired and stressed? More and more research is proving that this isn't all in our mind. Some foods really do lead to a change in our moods (心情).

Carbohydrate (碳水化合物) for calm

This is how some people medicate(治療) themselves with food — by reaching for cookies or pasta(意大利面食) whenever they're upset. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work. You must eat a meal consisting of 100% carbohydrate, on an empty stomach, to obtain the serotonin (血清素) increase so that you have a good mood.

To get the wishedfor effect, you must not eat anything for four hours and then eat at least 30 grams of straight carbohydrate. Dry cereal (谷類食品), a piece of bread with jam, or a potato should do_the_trick.

Protein (蛋白質(zhì)) for power

Of course, sometimes we don't need to be calm and sleepy.Sometimes we need a great deal of mental concentration, so this is when it's important to mix protein and carbohydrate. The protein will prevent the tryptophan (色氨酸) from flooding your brain, and the rise in serotonin(血清素) won't occur.

Why dessert makes us happy

Fat and sugar cause the brain to let go endorphins (內(nèi)啡肽), which send pleasure signals throughout the body. This would be fine, except humans are not particularly good at stopping at one cookie or cake.

You can also satisfy your sweet tooth by choosing fruit for dessert.

Timing your meals for energy

Blood sugar drops after four hours of going without food, causing a decrease(減少) in energy. Eating usually fixes this within 20 to 30 minutes, but don't suppose that eating more will cause a faster increase in energy.

When you eat has as much of an effect on your mood as what you eat. If you regularly go for a long period of time between meals, rethink your schedule and plan ahead.

1.The underlined phrase“ do_the_trick” in the third paragraph means ________.

A.be extremely smart

B.intend to cheat someone

C.bring about the desired result

D.do something to amuse people

2.The function of protein is ________.

A.to help you keep calm and sleepy

B.to make you feel energetic

C.to lead you to slowness

D.to increase serotonin in your brain

3.We can infer from the last two parts that ________.

A.fat and sugar can greatly help people feel happy

B.we humans tend to eat lots of cookies and cakes

C.the more we eat, the faster we will gain energy

D.what we eat is more important than when we eat

4.The main idea of the passage is ________.

A.eating for a better mood

B.eating to make you calm

C.eating for more protein

D.eating to make us strong
