The World Bank has looked at the distinguishing features of successful school system.

According to the World Bank’s education specialist, Harry Patrinos, this include: improving the quality of teachers and making sure that teachers are highly regarded; providing information to make schools accountable and giving autonomy to schools and head teachers.

This matters not only for individual pupils but also for the well-being of countries, he says, because improving educational performance has a direct impact on improving economic performance.

China’s education performance— at least in cities such as Shanghai and Hong Kong— seems to be as spectacular as the country’s fast growing economy.

Certainly both these open and outward-looking cities consider education to be important and are willing to adopt the best educational practices from around the world to ensure success. In Hong Kong, education accounts for more than one-fifth of entire government spending every year.

“Shanghai and Hong Kong are small education systems, with a concentration of ideas, manpower and resources for education,” says Prof Cheng.

Under the banner “First class city, first class education”, Shanghai set about systematically re-equipping classroom, upgrading schools and improving the curriculum in the last decade.

It got rid of the “key schools” system which concentrated resources only on top students and top schools. Instead staff were trained in more interactive teaching methods and computers were brought in.

About 80% of Shanghai school leavers go to university compared to an overall average of 24% in China.

Meanwhile, dynamic Hong Kong was forced into educational improvements as its industries moved to cheaper mainland Chinese areas in the 1990s.Its survival as a service and management hub depends on upgrading knowledge and skills.

In the last decade Hong Kong has concentrated on closing the gap for all students, says a report by McKinsey management consultants.

The report, How the World’s Most Improved School Systems Keep Getting Better, rated Hong Kong’s education system among the best in the world.

[1] HEY boys, attention please! If you want to go to the US one day, you’d better be fully prepared, because, well, you and the boys in the US are a bit different. In my opinion, you’d better try to do the following things.

[2] Firstly, know how to knot a tie (打領(lǐng)帶). In the US, every boy above school age wears suits when they go to weddings (婚禮). My friend Madison from Virginia said it shows respect to others. Do you know how to ____________? Learn how!

[3] Secondly, be a gentleman. I know in China some boys are still proud of being strong. But in the US, a good man should also be polite. Here are two examples: holding the door for people behind you and giving the seat on a bus to old people.

[4] The last is to learn something about football and baseball. Chinese boys like ping-pong, basketball and soccer, but American boys love football and baseball. They get very happy when they play and watch these sports. It’s not necessary to be a fan of football or fix (固定) your TV channel to baseball games. But in order to watch the sports with other boys, at least learning some rules would help.

[5] However, all this doesn’t mean that the American way is always the right way. We sometimes need to know the importance of another culture, but don’t feel you have to know that if it makes you uncomfortable. Have fun along the way!

1.Who might be the audience of this speech? (within 10 words)

2.Please fill in the blank in Paragraph 2? (within 3 words)

3.Which paragraph might the following example be put in? (within 2 words)

“Men in the US like to follow the ‘ladies first’ rule.”

4.What are the popular sports among American boys? (within 3 words)

5.How do you understand the last paragraph? (within 15 words)

Stop wasting your time thinking of reasons for your failures. Instead, realize that the seeds of success were planted within you when you were born. Only you have the power to make those seeds grow.

The seeds, and the power to grow them, are contained in the most awesome machine ever created: the human mind. Success is a choice and not a chance. You were born a winner. You were born rich. You can be a success if only you make the right choice.

You cannot be successful without first developing your self-confidence. Your level of self-confidence is always based on the degree of control that you are able to exercise over yourself, and thus over your life. People with low self-confidence are people who do not believe that they have any power, or responsibility for their lives. They are always victims. They are leaves tossed (搖擺) by the winds of chance blown about with any sudden change in the weather.

You can exercise control over your life only to the degree that you believe you are responsible for everything that happens in your life. Failures think that everything happens by accident and chance. Successful people realize that they are responsible.

Everything happens as a result of something. If we can identify(確定) the cause, we can control the effect. We are responsible for what we choose to think and believe. One generally rises to the level that one expects. We are responsible for setting our expectations. Our success is dependent upon our level of confidence.

In all areas of your life, whether they are financial, physical, or spiritual, you are responsible. Once you recognize this, accept it, and firmly believe it. You are on the road to success.

1.People with low self-confidence are compared to leaves because they .

A. don’t have the power to face their lives

D. are easily affected by windy weather

2.Losers would think that .

A. they fail only because of bad luck

B. they don’t make efforts to succeed

If your family is thinking of getting a pet, consider adopting from an animal shelter. Animal shelters are full of dogs, cats, rabbits, and more animals, all in need of loving homes. Some may come with emotional or behavioral issues, but most are happy, healthy, and ready for a loving home. Here are some tips for you to find great animals.

Make some decision.

Think about what you want in a pet and remember that all pets have different personalities. Cats tend to be more independent and need less affection, but kittens need lots of attention. Cats don’t need to be walked , but you need to clip their nails and play with them. Dogs need to be walked at the very least twice a day. However , they are usually great companions and love to spend time with their family.

Visit the shelter.

Set aside at least a few hours to visit shelters in your area—remember that you may need to visit more than one visit. Try to bring along everyone who will be living with a new pet. Ask the shelter staff lots of questions. And never adopt an animal because you feel sorry for it—be patient so you find a pet who is truly a good match for your family.

Get everything ready.

Buy all necessary supplies and food well before the animal comes home. Make sure that the entire household is in agreement about rules and responsibilities—will the dog be allowed on the couch? Who will clean the litter box? Put it in writing before the pet arrives.

Bring your new friend home !

You’ll probably be excited when your new pet arrives, but be sure to give them space and time to get adjusted to a new home and a new family. The pet may act differently once they leave the shelter. Interact(交流)with your pet a lot and get them used to a routine, and soon you’ll be one big happy family !

1.Which of the following is the first important factor should be considered when adopting a pet?

A. Think twice about the adoption.

B. Get detailed information about the pets.

C. Make full preparations for the coming pet.

D. Try to make the pet your family member.

2.According to the article, which of the following statements is true?

A. Both cats and dogs need walking and attention.

B. Both cats and dogs are human’s good partners.

C. All the animals in the shelter are in good condition.

D. It’s necessary to talk a lot with your new pets every day.

3.Before a new pet comes home, we’d better ______.

A. show concern for the animals

B. set down an agreement on paper

C. bring all the members to visit the shelter

D. get it adjusted to a new environment immediately

4.The article is intended for ______.

A. animal shelters B. shelter staff

C. pet lovers D. pet protectors
