I have just got some good news to tell you. I win a national prize for my painting last week. My father was so pleasing that he suggested I went to England for a holiday this summer. I’d like stay here for half a month, visiting some places of interest and practise my English as well. We have kept in touch each other for nearly a year now. I have often dreamed of talking face to face with you. I hope you’ll be on the holiday at that time, but I’m sure we will have a lot to talk about. I also want to buy some souvenir for my friends at home. If I have any better ideas, please share them with me.

Bali(巴厘島) is an Indonesia island that is rich in indigenous (本土的) culture.A lot of people say that Balinese culture is unique and that the people of Bali have always been contented with the “now”.If you ask a Balinese person what heaven is like, the probable answer will be "just like Bali".This only goes to show that most Balinese people are happy to be where they are and never worry.
One factor that contributes to this laid-back lifestyle is the culture of close family ties in Bali.In the Balinese culture, support is always available.Balinese extended families are so tightly knit that all members usually reside in the same complex.
Hinduism(印度教)is one of the main religions in Bali. The Balinese culture is based on a form of this religion, which is called “Hindu Dharma”.This religion reached the island during the eleventh century. Most of the family customs and traditions as well as community lifestyles of the Balinese people are influenced by this. The religious influence even expands widely into the arts, which makes Bali distinct(不同于) from the rest of Indonesia.
In spite of the fact that tourists flood to the island every year, the Balinese people have managed to conserve their culture.Almost every native of Bali is an artist in some form or another.Parents and villagers have passed on their skills to their children, who all seem to have inclinations (意愿) either to music, dance, painting, and decor.
Another remarkable mark of the Balinese culture is the series of ceremonies and rituals(儀式) known as the Manusa Yadnya. This marks the different stages of Balinese life.Cremation (火葬) is very popular on this island, and unlike in the West, death is a joyous and colorful event for the Balinese.

The world is filled with smart, talented, educated and gifted people. We meet them every day. A few days ago, my car was not running well. I pulled it into a garage and the young mechanic had it fixed in just a few minutes. He knew what was wrong by simply listening to the engine. I was amazed. The sad truth is, great talent is not enough.
I am constantly shocked at how little talented people earn. I heard the other day that less than 5 percent of Americans earn more than $100, 000 a year. A business consultant who specializes in the medical trade was telling me how many doctors and dentists struggle financially. It was this business consultant who gave me the phrase, "They are one skill away from great wealth."
There is an old saying that goes, "Job means "just over broke (破產(chǎn))" ". And unfortunately, I would say that the saying applies to millions of people. Because school does not think financial intelligence is intelligence, most workers "live within their means". They work and they pay the bills. Instead I recommend to young people to seek work for what they will learn, more than what they will earn.
When I ask the classes I teach, "How many of you can cook a better hamburger than McDonald’s?” almost all the students raise their hands. I then ask, "So if most of you can cook a better hamburger, how come McDonald’s makes more money than you?" The answer is obvious: McDonald’s is excellent at business systems. The reason so many talented people are poor is because they focus on bui1ding a better hamburger and know little or nothing about business systems. The world is filled with talented poor people. They focus on perfecting their skills at building a better hamburger rather than the skills of selling and delivering the hamburger.
1.The author mentions the mechanic in the first paragraph to show that ________.
A. he has a sharp sense of hearing B. he is ready to help others
C. he is just one of the talented people D. he knows little about car repairing
2.The underlined part in the third paragraph can be best replaced by “________”.
A. spend more than they can afford B. do in their own way
C. live in their own circle D. live within what they earn
3.Why do talented people earn so little according to the author?
A. They lack financial intelligence.
B. They don’t work hard enough.
C. They don’t make full use of their talents.
D. They have no specialized skills.
4.The main purpose of the author is to tell us ________.
A. how young people can find a satisfactory job
B. what schools should teach students
C. how McDonald’s makes much money
D. why so many talented people are poor

In an effort to discourage people from using plastics, scientists have been hard at work inventing alternative packaging products. From water bottles made from seaweed to cutlery(餐具) made from rice and wheat,a number of inventions are set to change the way we eat while we are on the go,or having a relaxing picnic in the park.
The idea of using seaweed to make eco-friendly(環(huán)保的) water bottles has been around for a few years.Recently,Ari Jonsson took his invention—a water bottle made from red seaweed—to show off at a festival. The bottles will only hold their shape as long as they are filled. As soon as these bottles are empty they will begin to break down, though they would be perfectly safe to eat.Ari Jonsson’s bottles are a step closer to a widely used alternative to the current plastic ones.
The eatable water container is not the only product to add to our image of the future.Narayana Pessapaty has also created eatable spoons. After the success of his spoons, Mr Pessapaty is ready to expand and introduce forks and chopsticks to his menu. His aim is to largely reduce the amount of plastic waste, which is a huge problem for waste sites all over the world. It is a product that may take up to 500 years to break down, and recycling companies worldwide are struggling to deal with it.
Aside from the obvious benefits to the environment, this new packaging is also cheap to produce and therefore cheap to buy.Even better is the fact that similar eatable cutlery can be made at home, possibly a science project for children or just fun with friends. Why not get experimenting and create your own recipes?
1.Why do scientists invent alternative packaging products?
A. To make people’s life more convenient.
B. To reduce the amount of plastic waste.
C. To charge the way we picnic outside.
D. To show off their inventive talents.
2.What makes Ari Jonsson’s water bottles eco-friendly?
A. They can be made at home.
B. They are cheap to produce and buy.
C. They will hold their shape when they are filled.
D. They will break down themselves when empty.
3.What do Ari and Narayana’s inventions have in common?
A. They are convenient to carry. B. They are safe to eat.
C. They can be used for a short time. D. They are heavier than plastics.
4.What can be inferred from this passage?
A. Home-made eatable cutlery is likely to be popular.
B. Eatable cutlery’will completely replace plastics in the near future.
C. No recycling companies can breakdown plastic waste.
D. It’s unsafe for individuals to invent eatable cutlery at home.

Anvitha Vijay has built two educational apps and is at work on a third. She aims to use her skills to help others.
Need an app for that? Anvitha Vijay, 9, can build it. With the help of YouTube videos, the young techie from Melbourne, Australia, learned to code at age 7. Soon, she was trying her hand at making apps.
“When I first got my iPad, I was fascinated by all the apps on it,” she told TFK. “It wasn’t long before I wanted to create my own.”
She built her first two apps with her younger sister in mind. Smartkins Animals helps children identify more than 100 animals and their sounds. Smartkins Rainbow Colors teaches kids colors. Each app has been downloaded thousands of times.
Anvitha’s skills won her a scholarship to attend a big tech conference hosted by Apple in San Francisco, California. There, she got applicable tips from the pros. Users are rewarded for achieving goals, such as eating their vegetables or practicing piano. Anvitha says the rewards are like getting a sticker for a job well done. “Kids can set goals with this app and get stars when they achieve them,” she says. “The idea is to empower and motivate kids to achieve one little step a day.”
Anvitha’s goal is to continue creating technology that helps kids learn while having fun. But even more important to her is that the world sees the power of technology in kids’ hands. “The more training we get in tech at an early age,” she says, “the better chance we have of becoming innovation champions who will one day change the world.”
