I walked up to the counter.Behind it was a lady with glasses on the tip of her nose and gray hair on her head.

"Excuse me," I said. She looked up."You're that Clements kid," she said."I'm Miss Bee.Come closer and let me get a look at you." She pushed her glasses up her nose."I can describe you to the police if something goes missing from the store."

"I'm not a thief!" I was shocked.I was seven,too young to be a thief!

"From what I can see, you're not much of anything. But I can tell you've got potential." She went back to reading her newspaper.

"I need to get these."I said, holding up my list."So? Go get them."Miss Bee pointed to a sign on the screen door. "I'm not your servant,so I suggest you get yourself a basket and start filling."

I visited Miss Bee several times a week that summer.Sometimes she short-changed me.Other times she overcharged. "That can of beans is only twenty nine cents" I corrected her one afternoon.I had watched the numbers change on the cash register closely, and Miss Bee had added 35 cents. She didn't seem embarrassed. She just looked at me over her glasses and fixed the price.

But she ever let me declare victory. All summer long she found ways to play tricks on me.No sooner had I learned how to pronounce bicarbonate of soda(小蘇打)and memorized its location on the shelf than Miss Bee rearranged the shelve and made me hunt for it all over again.

One day before I left, she said,"I know what you think of me,but I don't care! Each of us is put on this earth for a reason.I believe my job is to teach every child I meet life lessons. When you get older you'll be glad our paths crossed!"Glad I met Miss Bee? Ha! The idea was absurd...

Until one day my daughter asked me to finish her math problems. "If I do it for you,how will you ever learn to do it yourself?" I said.Suddenly,I remembered the lady Miss Bee.

A new eight-kilometre road is under construction that links the port area with the motorway system. It is expected to carry 20,000 trucks and cars a day, which greatly reduces the overcrowded traffic in the center of the city. As part of the project, two four-kilometre road tunnels are being built below the central area of the city, one for traffic to the north and the other for traffic to the south .The two tunnels are about 20 metres below the surface and are 12 metres wide, providing for two lanes of traffic in each direction.

In the upper part of the tunnel two air-conditioning pipes remove the waste gas of trucks and cars and keep the quality of air inside the tunnel. The lighting is at the top of the tunnel, practically at its highest point. There will also be electronic signs at frequent intervals (間隔). They show traffic conditions ahead, and can be seen clearly by drivers. The wall is made up of four main elements, which include a waterproofing covering and , on the inside of the tunnel , a concrete lining (混凝土襯砌).

Each tunnel is roughly round and the lower part of the tunnel is somewhat flat .The surface of the road lies on the base, which is made of concrete and steel. The drainage system (排水系統(tǒng)), just below the road surface on one side, removes any extra liquid, particularly water. In the event of fire, the fire main, which is made of steel, pipes water to many fire hydrant stations at regular intervals along the length of the tunnel. A fear of heights is a common feeling that is easy to understand. According to many psychologists, a fear of heights is one of the only two natural fears --- the other is the fear of loud noises. 1. If you are not afraid, you could walk too close to the edge and fall off. Having a fear of heights is good because it protects us from real danger.

2. They experience an intense fear even inside a safe environment such as a skyscraper, which is not an appropriate response and it is not helpful. 3. “As long as I can remember, I have had a powerful fear of heights. It can completely ruin a vacation. For example, when I was with friends in Paris, I became terrified while going up to the Eiffel Tower. I was almost crying and I felt embarrassed for the rest of the vacation,” Adams said.

Fortunately, having an irrational(不合理的) fear of heights can be corrected. 4. The most effective way seems to be getting the people to acknowledge their fears, for example, by encouraging them to go to the top of tall buildings, hike up steep mountains, or stand on a high bridge.

5. When faced with a threatening situation, taking slow, deep breaths can help slow the heart rate and increase the oxygen flowing to muscles to keep from tensing up. If possible, a few minutes of meditation(冥想) may be effective in relieving some tension.

It is important to remember that an inappropriate fear of heights is not unusual and can be treated.

A. Another way to overcome a fear of heights is to learn to control the physical symptoms.

B. However, some people have an irrational (非理性的) and unhealthy fear of heights.

D. There are a number of ways this can be achieved.

E. John Adams, an English teacher, has an irrational fear of heights that makes his life very difficult.

F. If you are on the edge of a cliff, it is useful to be a little afraid.

G. Nearly everyone experiences some degree of anxiety when exposed to heights.
