Many facts suggest that children are overweight and the situation is getting worse, according to the doctors. I feel there are  36  reasons for this.
Some people blame the fact  37   we are surrounded by shops selling unhealthy, fatty foods,  _38  fried chicken and ice cream,  39  low price. This has turned out a whole generation of grown-ups  40  seldom cook a meal for themselves. If there  41  fewer of these restaurants, then probably children would buy less take-away food.
There is another argument that  42  parents for allowing their children to become overweight. I _43  this, because good eating habits begin early in life, long before children start to visit fast food shops. If children are given fried chicken and chocolate  44  healthy food, or are always allowed to choose  45  they eat, they will go for sweet and salty foods every time, and this  46  throughout their lives.
There is a third reason for this situation. Children these days  47  very little exercise. They do not walk to school. When they  48  home, they sit in front of  49  or their computers and play computer games.  50  is this an unhealthy pastime (消遣),it also gives them time to eat more  51  food.  52  they need is to go outside and play active games or sports.
The above  53   the main reasons for this problem, and therefore we have to  54  young people to be more active, as well as steering them away from fast food shops and  55 eating habits.

A new study has found no evidence that sunscreen, commonly used to reduce the risk of skin caner, actually increases the risk.
Researchers from the University of Yale based their findings on a review of 18 earlier studies that looked at the association between sunscreen use and melanomas (黑素瘤). They said that they found flaws in studies that had reported associations between sunscreen use and higher risk of melanoma.
Most health experts believe that by protecting the skin from the harmful effects of the sun, sunscreen helps prevent skin cancer, which is increasing in incidence (發(fā)生率) faster than any other cancer in the United States.
But questions have been raised about sunscreen and whether it may have the opposite effect, perhaps by allowing people to remain exposed to the sun longer without burning.
The researchers said that among the problems with some earlier studies is that they often failed to take into account that those people most at risk for skin cancer—people with fair skin and freckles (雀斑), for example—are more likely to use sunscreen. As a result, it may appear that sunscreen users get cancer more often.
The studies, which generally relied on volunteers to recall their sunscreen use, were also unable to prove how well the products had been applied, said the new study.

Air travel is such an everyday experience these days that we are not surprised when we read about a politician having talks with the Japanese Prime Minister one day, attending a meeting in Australia the following morning and having to be off at midday to sign a trade agreement in Hong Kong. But frequent long-distance flying can be so tiring that the traveler begins to feel his brain is in one country, his digestion(消化吸收)in another and his powers of concentration nowhere---in short, he hardly knows where he is.
Air travel is so quick nowadays that we can leave London after breakfast and be in New York in eight hours, yet what really upsets us most is that when we arrive it is lunch time while we have already had lunch on the plane and are expecting dinner.
Doctors say that air travelers are in no condition to work after crossing a number of time zones. Airline pilots, however, often live by their own watches.
小題1:After a long air travel, a traveler _______.
A.finds himself in a different world
B.finds his brain apart from his body
C.finds himself in Hong Kong the following morning
D.has little sense about where he is
小題2:The sentence “Airline pilots often live by their own watches. ” means______.
A.they don’t trust others’ watches
B.they don’t change their watches
C.they make a living by their own watches
D.they do as they used to do
小題3:Doctors suggest the travelers_______?
A.should rest when they arrive in New York from London.
B.should work in good condition since they just finish a long journey.
C.rest in a place with good condition.
D.give up long journey since it makes them tired.

Koalas are pictured everywhere in Australia-on cleaning products, on “boxes of chocolate, on sports team shirts. Yet the animals live only in pockets along the east coast.
They once inhabited the entire coastline. The koala population dropped after farmers cut down many of the forests where koalas lived, and hunters killed the animals for their fur.
By the early 1900s, “koalas were basically shot out of south Australia,” says ecologist Bill Ellis, who studies the relationships among living things and their environments.
I recently joined Ellis and his team in a forest on St Bees Is land, 19 miles off the northeastern coast of Australia, with eight other volunteers. The island is a natural laboratory, yielding findings that may help protect koalas elsewhere on the continent.
The volunteers searched the island for koalas in the blue gum trees. When we found a koala, we gathered information about the trees in the area.
Blue gum is a species of the eucalyptus tree in which the funny leaf eaters spend most of their time. Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, and their leaves are the main food source for koalas. Although koalas can walk on the ground, they are better suited for life in the canopy, the high cover of branches and leaves in a forest.
What has Ellis’s research told him so far? The population of St Bees seems to be healthy. Yet Ellis wonders whether the koalas might be heading for hard times. The island is overrun with wild goats, and Ellis thinks the goats are eating the small blue gum trees.
Without those trees, the koalas will run out of food in the future. Ellis hopes more research will help him understand how to protect the blue gum trees-and the koalas that depend on them. “I think that’s what everyone is trying to do-to make a difference.” Ellis says.
59. It can be inferred from the first paragraph that     .
A. koalas’ pictures can be found everywhere in the world
B. koalas in Australia like to eat chocolate
C. only in the east coast of Australia can you find koalas
D. you can buy the pictures of koalas only in the east coast of Australia
60. Which of the following is TRUE about koalas?
A. They usually hide in a cave.     B. They feed on the leaves of blue gum trees.
C. They prefer to walk on the ground.  D. They don’t adapt to the high cover of branches.
61. What will Ellis most probably start to do next?
A. To keep the population of St Bees healthy.
B. To kill all the goats on the island.
C. To find some new foods for goats.
D. To protect blue gum trees for koalas.
62. The purpose of writing this passage is to      .
A. expect people to concern about the life of koalas
B. record trip to Australia for watching koalas
C. present some basic knowledge of koalas’ life
D. introduce the ecosystem of wildlife in Australia

Comprehensive lifestyle changes including a better diet and more exercise can lead not only to a better physique, but also to swift and dramatic changes at the genetic level, U.S. researchers said on Monday. In a small study, the researchers tracked 30 men with low-risk prostate cancer(前列腺癌)who decided against conventional medical treatment such as surgery and radiation or hormone therapy.
The men underwent three months of major lifestyle changes, including eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and soy products, moderate exercise such as walking for half an hour a day, and an hour of daily stress management methods such as meditation(冥想). As expected, they lost weight, lowered their blood pressure and saw other health improvements. But the researchers found more profound changes when they compared prostate biopsies taken before and after the lifestyle changes. After the three months, the men had changes in activity in about 500 genes -- including 48 that were turned on and 453 genes that were turned off. The activity of disease-preventing genes increased while a number of disease-promoting genes, including those involved in prostate cancer and breast cancer, shut down, according to the study published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The research was led by Dr. Dean Ornish, head of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California, and a well-known author advocating lifestyle changes to improve health. "It's an exciting finding because so often people say, 'Oh, it's all in my genes, what can I do?' Well, it turns out you may be able to do a lot," Ornish, who is also connected with the University of California, San Francisco, said in a telephone interview. "'In just three months, I can change hundreds of my genes simply by changing what I eat and how I live'. That's pretty exciting," Ornish said. "The implications of our study are not limited to men with prostate cancer."
60. The article basically states that a healthy lifestyle__________.
A. can even change your genes for the better.
B. has no effect on your genes.
C. is good for the environment.
D. helps men recover from prostate cancer.
61. Apart from eating healthy food and exercising, the men in the study__________.
A. were put under a lot of stress.
B. were walking for hours a day..
C. were taught stress management methods.
D. were thinking for a whole day.
62. In total, how many disease-preventing genes turned on as a result of the healthy lifestyle?
A.   30           B. 453                   C.500             D. 48
63. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the article?
A. The men with low-risk prostate in the study lost weight and lowered their blood pressure.
B. A famous author and Dr. Dean Ornish led this research.
C. Dr. Dean Ornish expressed his optimism about this research in a telephone interview.
D. Conventional medical treatment has no effect on the men with prostate cancer.

It looks a bit like the coolers used to keep drinks fresh on asunny day but the cool box being tested in hot Mozambique serves a higher purpose –saving lives from malaria(瘧疾).
The new cool box is intended to keep malaria medicines at 25 degrees Celsius(77 degrees Fahrenheir) or below in poor rural areas without electricity where the temperature can reach 45 degrees Celsius.
“At the beginning, the cool boxes will be used to store malarial drugs,” said Parfair Komlan Edah, advisor to John Snow Incorporated, a US company developing the coolers.
“We will change the treatment pattern and procedure because the drugs are expensive and they have to be well stored to be effective,” he said.
The projuct, funded by the US Agency for International Development , started in 2006 and is still at an expermental stage. The coolers are currently being tested in three regions of Mozambique –Maputo, Tete and Zambezia.
The tests will determine whether the coolers are adopted for use nationwide.
In Mozambique , malaria is the leading cause of death among children admitted to pediatric(兒科的) services and there has been an increase in cases of malaira in recent years.
Faced with the sudden increase in malaira, Mozambique’s health ministry last year decided to expand the use fo rapid diagnostic tests for the disease that can give a result within minutes.
The only trouble was that diagnostic tests have to be stored at the temperature of 25 degrees Celsius or below and are currently only available in provincial hospitals that have refrigeration facilities.
“The project was faced with the dilemma(進退兩難的處境) of how to ensure quality products despite the hot, humid weather and lack of electricity common in remote health facilities,” Edah said.
The solution was to design”evaporative(蒸發(fā)的) coolers”—similar in size to a small refrigerator. The coolers have a water tank at the top that is regularly refilled. When water evaporates from the tank it passes aong wicks that stick out of the cooler, keeping the content s of the box cool/
In a message on World Malaria Day, the World Health Organization(WHO) stresed the importance of national malaira programmes.
Nelson Nkini, head of Proserv, a Mozambican non-governmental group supplying mosquito nets treated with anti-malarial substances, said preventing the disease was cheaper than curing it because of the cost of medicines.
60. If the cool boxes are used,_________.
A. medicines can be stored at any degree Celsius
B. malaria will disapear in Mozambique
C. malaria medicines will be used more effectively
D. the temperature will become lower in Mozambique
61. The situation in Mozambique is that__________.
A. the official department doesn’t know what mianly causes children’s death
B. the project funded by the US Agency for International Development is fighting against malaria.
C. the use of rapid diagnostic tests for malaria is being expanded inth whold country
D. diagnostic tests can be currently available in most rural hospitals.
62. Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. A project in Mozambique
B. Fighting against malaria
C. Preventing the spread of malaria
D. Super cooler gives hope for malaria victims

Did you ever wonder how some of your favorite foods, products or toys came about? Believe it or not, they may have been an accident, or a failure of some other intention. Below, we found three mistakes we’re thankful for turned out to be what they are.
1. Most historians hold that the Chinese invented fireworks in the 9th century when they
discovered how to make gunpowder. Story has it that a Chinese cook accidentally mixed together what were then considered common kitchen items and noticed they burnt. When put tightly in a bamboo tube and lit, it blew up.
2. In May of 1886, a law led John Pemberton, a pharmacist(藥劑師), to rewrite the formula(配方) for "Pemberton’s French Wine Coca,” his popular headache treatment. Containing sugar instead of wine as a sweetener, the outcome became something for Coke, which was later mixed with carbonated water. His bookkeeper suggested the name Coca-Cola because he thought the two C’s would look good together, which is how what we call Coca-Cola, a world –wide drink came into being.
3. During World War II, scientists at the University of Birmingham invented the magnetron—an important heat-producing part of the microwave oven(微波爐). While working for Raytheon Corporation after the war, the American engineer Percy Spencer was testing the magnetron when a chocolate bar in his pocket melted. He went on to test other foods including popcorn kernels, and found it to be a much more efficient way to cook. In 1947 Raytheon came out with the first restaurant microwave oven, which was six feet tall and weighed 750 lbs.

In recent years advances in medical technology have made it possible for people to live longer than in the past. New medicines and machines are being developed every day to extend life. However, some people, including some doctors, are not in favor of these life extending measures, and they argue that people should have the right to die when they want. They say that the quality of life is as important as life itself and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They saw that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊嚴(yán)) and to decide when they want to die. Others argue that life under any conditions is better than death and that the duty of doctors is always to extend life as long as possible. And so the battle goes on and on without a definite answer.

The Food and Drug Administration is, again, threatening to impose(征稅) milk and meat from cloned animals on a public that opposes the technology and its products.
Respected polls report that more than 60% of Americans think animal cloning is immoral, and that most people said they wouldn’t knowingly eat the products even if the FDA approved them. But because the FDA would allow cloned meat and milk to be sold without identifying labels, consumers wouldn’t be able to avoid them. The FDA has consistently tilted toward those who want cloned milk and meat in our food. Agency officials have repeatedly asserted that science shows cloned milk and meat are safe for humans. But the FDA has never published the complete scientific studies it says support that claim.
The argument that cloning is safe for animals is unconvincing. Cloned meat and milk offer no public economic benefits. Having cloned cows produce more milk wouldn’t reduce milk prices. US farmers produce more milk than we drink, and the government is required to buy the surplus. Since 2000, dairy support programs have cost taxpayers more than $ 5 billion.
Most important, this first decision to advance animal biotechnology raises ethical issues beyond the FDA’s expertise(專家意見). Techniques used to clone animals will advance the ability to clone humans-and create animals with human genes. Neither the agency nor animal scientists are qualified to tell us whether and when it is ethically acceptable for humans to alter the essential nature of animals. We need a national discussion, including ethicists and religious leaders, to consider the wisdom of cloned and transgenic animals. Given the risk of unintended consequences, we should proceed cautiously. The president should halt further FDA action on cloning and set in motion(運作) a process for beginning this broader discussion.
1. The author’s attitude towards cloning is __________.
A. standing in the middle      B. opposed     C. approving     D. supportive
3. In US many people buy cloned foods __________.
A. to support the new technique
B. because FDA approved them
C. because they cannot tell which is cloned food
D. because they cannot read the labels.
3. From the text we know that cloning technique ___________.
A. developed well enough to clone human beings
B. may cause unintended bad results to human beings
C. will bring more unexpected economic benefits
D. is supported by ethicists and religious leaders
4. What’s the best title of this passage?
A.Public Is Against Cloned Food     B.Benefits of Cloned Food
C.Cloned Food Is Illegal            D.Technique in Cloned Food
