Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas, on July 24,1897. In those days, airplanes were not nearly as common as they are today. Earhart was 12 years old before she ever saw an airplane, and she did not take her first flight until 1920. America Earhart was so thrilled by her first airplane ride that she quickly began to take flying lessons.

Her first instructor was Neta Snook, one of the first women to graduate from the Curtiss School of Aviation(飛行).Earhart borrowed mone from her mother to buy a two-seat plane. She got her US flying licence in December 1921, and in 1923, Earhart received her international pilot’s license—only the 16th woman to do so.

Amelia Earhart wasn’t afraid to break down barriers. After flying across the Atlantic as a passenger in 1928, Amelia Earhart’s next goal was to complete a transatlantic crossing(??橫跨大西洋)alone. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh became the first person to make a solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic. In 1932, exactly five years after Lindbergh’s flight, Earhart became the first woman to repeat the feat(壯舉).

She decided that her next trip would be to fly around the world. In March 1937, she flew to Hawaii with fellow pilot Paul Mantz to begin this flight. Earhart lost control of the plane on takeoff, however, and the plane had to be sent to the factory for repairs.

In June, she went to Miami to again begin a flight around the world, this time with Fred Noonan as her navigator(領(lǐng)航員).The pair made it to New Guinea in 21 days, even though Earhart was tired and ill. During the next leg of the trip, they departed New Guinea for Howland Island, a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. July 2, 1937, was the last time Earhart and Noonan communicated with a nearby Coast Guard ship. They were never heard from again.

Some people think that as more and more people have televisions in their homes, fewer and fewer people will buy books and newspapers. Why read an article in the newspaper, when the TV news can bring you the information in a few minutes and with pictures? Why read the life story of a famous man, when a short television program can tell you all that you want to know?

Television has not killed reading, however. Today, newspapers sell in very large numbers. And books of every kind are sold more than ever before. Books are still a cheap way to get information and enjoyment. Although some books with hard covers are expensive, many books are printed today as paperbacks (平裝本), which are quite cheap. A paperback collection of short stories, for example, is always cheaper than an evening at the cinema or the theater, and you can keep a book for ever and read it many times.

Books are a wonderful provider of knowledge and pleasure and some types of books should be in every home. Every home should have a good dictionary. A good encyclopedia (百科全書), though expensive, is useful, too, because you can find information on any subject. Besides, you can have such books as history books, science textbooks, cookbooks, and collections of stories and poems. Then from time to time you can take a book of poems off your shelves and read the thoughts and feelings of your favorite poets.

68. It can be inferred from the passage that _________.

A. TV programs are a chief provider of knowledge.

B. cinemas are the best choice in getting information.

C. reading is a cheap way of learning and having fun.

D. newspapers are an expensive way to enjoy oneself.

69. What does the sentence “Television has not killed reading, however” underlined in the second paragraph suggest?

A. People only need reading, though.                B. Reading is still necessary today.

C. Reading is more fun than television     D. Watching television doesn’t help reading.

70. Which of the following is mainly discussed in the last paragraph?

A. Types of books                                  B. Kinds of dictionaries.

C. Lists of history books                        D. Collections of stories and poems

71. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Fewer and fewer people will buy books.

B. A good dictionary should be kept in every home.

C. Books with hard covers sell better than paperbacks.

D. More people like TV programs about famous men.

Walking down any of Shanghai’s main shopping streets this week, newcomers might think the locals have been celebrating Christmas for centuries. Christmas may not be a customary holiday in China, but businessmen in Shanghai know it will bring something more valuable than tradition: people are willing to spend money. Most Chinese may feel little connection with the Christmas celebration, but with most shops offering discount (折扣), the message couldn’t be clearer-- it is the season to part with one’s hard-earned cash.

Much of that marketing drive is directed towards thousands of foreigners and foreign companies that call Shanghai home. But for Shanghai’s 13 million locals, regardless of personal interest, there seems no avoiding the season’s commercial greetings. Along some major roads, nearly every shop window displays some symbols to the holiday: a man-made fir tree(杉樹) with lights, or a snowman.

With an increasing number of westerners arriving in the city for work, young Shanghainese, eager to keep pace with the latest western fashions, have begun to show their interest in Christmas. But some people still don’t think Christmas is an important festival in China. At least it is less important than the New Year and China’s Spring Festival.

72.. Why are people willing to spend money during Christmas?

A. They have earned a lot of money.

B. Goods are much cheaper during this period of time.

C. It is time for shops to sell goods.

D. Businessmen like Christmas.

73.Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Christmas is the season people will hold their hard-earned money tightly.

B. Most Chinese people think they have something to do with Christmas.

C. Christmas is the season for common people to earn money.

A. They think themselves connected with Christmas celebrations.

B. They think Christmas is more important than New Year’s Day.

C. They want to follow the up-to-date western fashions.

75.From the first paragraph we know that _______.

A. It is difficult for most people to earn money.

B. It is easy for most people to earn money.

In every British town, large and small, you will find shops that sell second-hand goods. Sometimes such shops deal mostly in furniture, sometimes in books, sometimes in ornaments (裝飾) and household goods, sometimes even in clothes.

The furniture may often be "antique", and it may well have changed hands many times. It may also be very valuable, although the most valuable piece will usually go to the London salerooms, where one piece might well be sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds. As you look around these shops and see the polished wood of chests and tables, you cannot help thinking of those long-dead hands which polished that wood, of those now-closed eyes which once looked at these pieces with love.

The books, too, may be antique and very precious; some may be rare first printings. Often when someone dies or has to move house, his books may all be sold, so that sometimes you may find whole libraries in one shop. On the border between England and Wales, there is a town which has become a huge bookshop as well. Even the cinema and castle have been taken over, and now books have replaced sheep as the town's main trade.

There are also much more humble shops, sometimes simply called "junk shops", where you can buy small household pieces very cheaply. Sometimes the profits (利潤) from these shops go to charity(慈善事業(yè)). Even these pieces, though, can make you feel sad; you think of those people who once treasured them, but who have moved on to another country or to death.

Although the British do not worship(崇拜) their ancestors, they do treasure the past and the things of the past. This is true of houses as well. These days no one knocks them down; they are rebuilt until they are often better than new. In Britain, people do not buy something just because it is new. Old things are treasured for their proven worth; new things have to prove themselves before they are accepted.

57.Books found in second-hand book shops may_________.

A.be copies of the earliest printings    B.be on sale for the first time

C.never be worth very much          D.never be rare

58.Second-hand goods sometimes fill you with sadness because_________.

A.they are too expensive for average buyers

B.they remind you of the original owners

  C.they are now forgotten

  D.they are sold for charity

59.The average British person ___________.

A.does not respect old things because they are not fashionable

B.likes to build new houses simply because it is fashionable to do so

C.likes to buy new things because they are fashionable

D.does not like to buy things simply because they are fashionable
