A good student will always make a proper study plan, with which he can study more effective.

There was once a time I listened to the teacher carefully in class and always did my homework on time. Every day I was as busy as a bee. I had no free time. Therefore, I had a few after-school activities. However, I couldn’t understand that I didn’t get good marks. So I asked my headteacher Mr. Li with help. He advised me to have a proper study pan make. I took her advice. After I stick to the plan for a month, I made rapid progresses. What made me even happy was that I had much more time to develop my own interests.

1. effective---effectively

2. (time)后加when

4. that---why

5. with---for

6. make---made

7. her---his

8. stick---stuck

9. progress

10. happy---happier

there is/was a time when…“有時候……”是固定句型,when引導(dǎo)定語從句,修飾a time,從句中作時間狀語,用關(guān)系副詞when。故在time后加when。

根據(jù)上文“I had no free time.”

故將with改為for。

故將make改為made。

【題目】“A good book might clarify something you knew little about, transform your world view, or move you in ways you didn’t think possible. The Soul of an Octopus(章魚)delivers on all three, ”the magazine New Scientist commented.

After writing about birds, pigs and tigers, US naturalist Sy Montgomery decided to choose these many-footed animals as the subject of her latest book, The Soul of an Octopus: a surprising exploration into the wonder of consciousness.

“Here is animal with poisonous liquid like a snake,a beak(喙)like a parrot, and ink like an old-fashioned pen. It can weigh as much as a man and extend as long as a car, yet it can pour its baggy; boneless body through an opening the size of all orange. It can change color and shape. It has a tongue covered with teeth. It can taste with its skin.” Montgomery explained to the National Geographic on why octopuses inspired her.

What Montgomery is able to show in The Soul of an Octopus is that octopuses are creatures who exhibit personality, intelligence and emotion, despite having nervous systems completely different from our own. She uses different experiments to show that they possess consciousness as well as individual personalities. For example, based on her research, she finds out that Octavia, an octopus caught in the wild, is friendly and good at multi-tasking. And Kali, another octopus, who has been living at the New England Aquarium, is playful and loves exploring.

Montgomery is a good storyteller. Through her study of, and communication with, these extraordinary creatures she shares what she learns from both science and her experiences. Her skillful writing presents facts together with personal description, which makes the book very informative but easy to read.

A. It is themed with a many-footed animal.

B. It mainly explores consciousness and wonders.

2Octopuses impress Montgomery greatly because.

A. they have unique physical functioning

B. their liquid can be used as good ink

C. they behave more like snakes and parrots

3What does Montgomery think of octopuses according to Paragraph 4?

A. They are friendly with each other.

B. They are similar to humans in a way.

C. They communicate with humans well.

D. They have different nature from humans.

4Which of the following best describes the book?

When I was in Junior Middle School, I once quarrel with my favorite teacher Mr. Yang because he criticized me strictly. Before that, I was so ashamed that I had no courage to see her again. To my surprised, Mr. Yang found me and apologized to me for his sharp words next day. He had said he could understand why I was so angry at that moment. Also, Mr. Yang hoped I could understand that he was so strictly with me because he thought I should have behaved better. What he had said or done made me very touching. Thousands of people began pouring into Pennsylvania from other states. They wanted to buy lottery tickets(彩票). The tickets cost only $ 0.9 each. But that small spending could bring them a reward of $ 90 million .That was the second largest lottery jackpot (積累獎金)in history.

More than 87 million tickets were bough t for the Pennsylvania lottery drawing. Those who bought tickets had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80.The chance of winning was one in 9.6 million, but that little chance certainly didn’t affect ticket sales. In the last few days before the drawing, tickets were sold at the unbelievable rate of 500 per second.

Experts say many people buy lottery tickets because they just want to have a piece of the action. Others say the lottery is a stock market for poor people. It allows them to dream about wealth they’ll probably never have.

But many people believe lotteries are no better than legalized gambling. Some critics note that most people who play are poor and may not be able to afford the tickets. There are also many addicts who take the game seriously. They may pour their life savings into lottery tickets. Some clubs have been formed to help them kick the habit.

Politicians like lotteries because they provide money that would otherwise have to come from new taxes. The profits from lotteries are usually used to pay for education or programs for senior citizens. But critics say this arrangement just allows states to legalize vice, under the name of social progress. Whether you regard stock lotteries right or not, you cannot refuse to accept their extreme popularity with many Americans.

A.Buying lotteries may help people become wealthy overnight.

B. Politicians like lotteries because they don’t have to pay extra taxes.

C.The profits from lotteries are usually used for the public.

D. Some critics don’t like lotteries because many poor people waste money on them.

【2】In just one hour in the last few days, the Pennsylvania lottery sold tickets totaling_______.

A.$ 16.2 million B.$ 38.88 million

C.$ 19.6 million D.$ 87 million

【3】 The underlined word in the last paragraph refers to__________.

A. something profiyable

B. something challenging

C. something immoral

D.something easy

【4】 What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce the lotteries in Pennsylvania.

B. To persuade people not to buy lotteries.

D. To tell us the different opinions on lotteries.

How northern Europeans beat the winter blues

Ask a child from northern Europe to draw two pictures—one on a rainy day and a second in the sunshine—and this is what you will get: in the first, as raindrops fall from the top of the page, the man behind the window has an unhappy expression. When a yellow sun sends out some light from the corner, the man is smiling.

Northern Europeans associate rain with sadness and sunshine with happiness. They think this is true because they are so aware of how their environment affects them. __【1】___In October 2008, a group of researchers examined the influence of different daily weather factors, including temperature, wind and sunlight, on 1,200 participants. The conclusion was that good or bad weather had little effect on people’s feelings. ___2__ A person who is upset on dark or cold days suffers from a negative mood(情緒), and he will be likely to experience a sad winter. This is the basis of an illness called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). __3__

AniKalayjian, professor of psychology at Fordham University, advises that we should take steps to strengthen the brain’s system against weather-driven mood changes. Research on SAD has been focused on the brain’s response to darkness and light. When our eyes detect darkness, the brain gives off melatonin, which starts sleep cycles. ___4__It takes over to help us wake up and feel better when we detect light. “We can encourage people to take charge of their feelings,” says Kalayjian. “We tell them to leave the computers and the indoor games and get out there in the sun. ____5_”

A day of rain can potentially destroy your plan and affect your mood. But as the Scottish comedian Billy Connolly once said: “There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothing.”

A. Yet that link has no scientific basis.

B. It is seriously doubted among the people who suffer from SAD.

C. It affects about 10% of the population of northern Europe each year.

D. Another chemical called serotonin, however, can make people happy.

E. That’s when people can recharge their serotonin and get a better mood.

F. Most studies prove that a negative feeling is associated with bad weather.

G. They determined that people actually differ in their sensitivity to weather changes.
