In the village where I grew up, everyone knew an old man, who lived a simply life and spent all his time painting. The villagers used to admiring his works and he often gave his paintings to his friends. Whenever he was offered money, he would not take them. He said he painted for a pleasure. He once gave one of his paintings to my father, whom actually wasn’t interested in art. Years later I found it in our old house. By that time the old man has died and people started to recognize his paintings as great works of art, which was worth lots of money. An art gallery made me an offer of $5,000 for this painting and I nearly sold it, so then I decided not to. It always reminds me my childhood and of the old man who didn’t really want to make money by paint.

此處為固定搭配:used to do“過(guò)去常常做……”。
【3】them→it 考查代詞。此處指代前面的money,是不可數(shù)名詞,用代詞it指代。
【4】去掉a 考查冠詞。此處pleasure為不可數(shù)名詞,for pleasure也可看成固定搭配,“為了樂(lè)趣”。故去掉a。
【5】whom→who 考查定語(yǔ)從句關(guān)系詞。此處為非限制性定語(yǔ)從句,缺少主語(yǔ),先行詞為人,應(yīng)用who。
【6】has→had 考查時(shí)態(tài)。根據(jù)By that time可知,此處表示過(guò)去的過(guò)去,故用過(guò)去完成時(shí),故把has改為had。
【7】was→were 此處為非限制性定語(yǔ)從句,主語(yǔ)which指代前面的works,復(fù)數(shù),故was改為were。
【8】so→but 考查連接詞。

There are many benefits of singing in a choir. They range 【1】the social: having the opportunity 【2】(make)new friends, to the physical benefits of learning to breathe 【3】(proper). Research has also shown that young people 【4】sing in choirs do better in their studies and have【5】tendency to be healthier.
But the first question you should ask【6】(you)if you are considering joining a choir is “can you sing in tune?” It might seem obvious, but 【7】you can, there is little point in seeking out a choir because you’ll only get rejected. Every choir you apply to join is going to audition(面試)you. Don’t worry if you can’t read music; that can be taught later. If you 【8】(accept), you’ll find choir practice to be hard work, but great fun, because they’re social events as much as music training. You will learn to read music and how to sing with confidence. Your voice and technique will develop, probably quite quickly with proper 【9】(instruct), and you may just end up【10】(wonder)why you didn’t do this years ago.

A short guide to surviving a post-election Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving in the US is a celebration of the blessings of the previous year. This time it included one of the most divisive presidential campaigns. Even now it is over, the possibility of argument has not disappeared. Here we have some tips for you to survive this Thanksgiving.
●Cover up any signal of union
It might be fine to have your Hillary bumper sticker in New York, but it isn't going to go down well in Wyoming, where 70% voted Trump. Similarly, your "I love Trump" T-shirt will probably not be popular in California, where 62% voted Hillary.【1】.
●Practice your facial expression beforehand
They say a picture tells 1,000 words. Your face is the same. 【2】You need to invest some energy in making sure your true feelings are completely buried. Ten minutes in front of the mirror should be enough to perfect your neutral face. 【3】Well, we suggest closing them. Easy.
●Have a list of neutral topics for the dinner table
The weather is A favorite subject of the British. It is inoffensive, bland and can provide a good half-hour's chat, if done well. Everyone has an opinion on whether or not it is colder/hotter/wetter/windier than last year/10 years ago/when they were little. You can involve the whole family.【4】With Clinton and Trump supporters largely split on whether climate change exists, it could inadvertently lead to politics. So it's maybe trickier for Americans than the weather-worn Brits. 【5】After all, the rivalry between your American football team of choice and your cousin's may have a long and vitriolic history, but it is likely to be less poisonous than the current differences in your politics.
A. Sports may not be a neutral subject.
B. Biting your lip is simply not enough this holiday season.
C. There are hundreds of outstanding topics for Thanksgiving.
D. There is one slight downfall to this particular favorite.
E. Are you one of those people whose eyes always tell the truth?
F. So we advise leaving the T-shirt at home, and covering up the stickers.
G. It would be fine, if people of different opinions would not spend Thanksgiving together.

International development officer Judith Young said: “We are entering an exciting period of school relation between Warwickshire and Shenzhen. There is a real appetite for sharing ideas among the Chinese. We were able to see the differences and similarities between the education systems and there are many areas in which our schools, teachers and pupils will be able to benefit from a different cultural perspective(觀點(diǎn)) and links with a country that is becoming very important on the world stage.
Throughout the high profile(引人注目) visit led by our county education officer, Eric Wood, our group was made to feel very welcome and attracted a great deal of interest. 【題目】A new study suggests that recent college graduates have a good chance of finding employment. The website Career Builder published the survey. The website reports on the U.S. job market. It found that 67 percent of employers plan to hire new college graduates this year. They also found that 27 percent of employers will be hiring recent graduates for jobs that pay up to $ 57,000 a year.
Career Builder said the improving economy and the rise in retirements of older workers is raising the need for young professionals.
There is, however, a concern that young graduates are not ready for life after college.
Another Career Builder survey of 2,186 hiring professionals found that they worry new college graduates lack professional experience. They blame universities for placing too much attention on teaching academic subjects that do not relate to real jobs. The hiring professionals suggest that schools should give more support to experience gained through internships (實(shí)習(xí)). They also said universities are not preparing their graduates well enough for jobs that involve (涉及) new technologies.
The survey found that business, computer science and engineering fields were seeking new workers the most. The biological sciences, architecture and education fields needed fewer new workers.
Career Builder’s advice to young graduates looking for jobs was to follow companies they like or social media.
The website also suggested students write blogs about their career interests.
