Parents are creating an “I want it now” generation by indulging children’s every demand at Christmas, say experts.Youngsters are becoming increasingly selfish, claim the education analysts.

Consumer?savvy children are forcing their families into racking up huge debts and risk becoming spoilt and dissatisfied in the future.

Behavioural consultant Chris Calland said,“Parents are desperate to make Christmas into a magical fairy tale for their kids. There’s nothing wrong with that as such. The problem arises when it means always giving into all our children’s demands—even if they are beyond our price range or not age?appropriate.”

Ms Calland, who runs “Santa Says No” style sessions with colleague Nicky Hutchinson, added,“Many of us go into so much debt providing the gifts our children want that we spend the rest of the year paying off the bills.Yet so often the parcels we’ve carefully wrapped, once opened, are just pushed away because the very thing our little boy or girl was once so desperate for, they have now lost interest in.”

Ms Calland and Ms Hutchinson have drawn up a list of guidelines to help parents manage their offspring’s Christmas lists this year. They say that adults can actually improve their relationships with their children by resisting “pester (糾纏) power”.

Ms Calland said,“All too often we say yes because we want an easier life when the fact is that we’re only building up problems for the future. We are helping create a generation of youngsters who are blind to the needs of others and the necessity of hard work.”

“Children learn fast—if we sometimes change our mind, they quickly realise it might be worth lying on the floor and screaming for it.Make sure you and your partner are working together on this.Be consistent. And try not to get caught up in competition with other families or friends.”

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的A.B.C和D項中,選出最佳選項。

“America’s No.1 Health Problem.” So reads the headline of an article published by the American Institute of Stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: “It has been estimated(估計)that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.”

It is no exaggeration(夸張)to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the National Consumers League, “Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”

However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” As a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain.”

The picture is no less bleak in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, “work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers across all types of employment sectors.” One survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.”

What about Asia? A report issued by a conference held in Tokyo concluded: “Job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” The report observed that “several countries in East Asia, including China and Korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. These countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers’ health.”

閱讀下列短文,從每題所給的四個選項A、B、C和D中,選出最佳選項。

Depression is much higher amongst female bosses than male bosses,a new US survey finds.Dr Tetyana Pudrovska, the study's first author, explained:“Women with job authority-the ability to hire, fire, and influence pay-h(huán)ave greatly more symptoms of depression than women without this power. But men with job authority have fewer symptoms of depression than men without such power.”

The study followed 1,500 middle-aged women and 1,300 middle-aged men who all graduated from high schools in Wisconsin. The men and women were surveyed in 1993 and 2004 to look at the connection between how much authority they had at work and symptoms of depression.

The results showed that amongst men and women with lower levels of authority at work, women had slightly higher levels of depression. This is normal since overall women suffer from depression slightly more than men.Amongst men and women with higher levels of authority at work, however,it was women who had many more symptoms of depression than men.Men in authority actually had a 10% lower risk of depression, while authority increased the risk of women having depressive symptoms by 9%.

Dr Pudrovska continued:“What shocked us is that women with job authority in our study are advantaged in terms of most characteristics that are strong signs of positive mental health. These women have more education, higher incomes, better jobs, and higher levels of job satisfaction than women without job authority.Yet,they have worse mental health than lower-status(地位)women.”

The cause of this discrepancy is not known, but Dr Pudrovska says:“Years of social science research suggests that women in authority positions deal with interpersonal anxiety, negative social interactions, negative stereotypes, prejudice, social isolation(社會孤立),as well as resistance(抵抗)from colleagues.Women in authority positions are viewed as lacking in the assertiveness(果斷)and confidence of strong leaders. But when these women display such characteristics, they are judged negatively for being unfeminine(不像女性的).This causes mental stress.”

Men,on the other hand,do not have to face these kinds of negative stereotypes about their abilities.

2.What conclusion can we draw from the passage?

A.The higher levels of authority, the fewer women suffer depression.

B.The higher levels of authority, the more women suffer depression.

C.The lower levels of authority, the more men suffer depression.

D.The lower levels of authority, the more women suffer depression.

3.What did Dr Pudrovska think of the results?

A.Exciting. B.Surprising.

C.Disappointing. D.Inspiring.

4.What does the underlined word“discrepancy”in Paragraph 5 mean?
