Mystery, the word excites our curiosity. Mystery novels sell thousands of copies each year and many readers count Agatha Christie among their favorite authors.
Christie was born in September of 1890 in England. When she was growing up,her mother often told her stories. Christie loved these stories that took her into a world of fantasy. Christie's mother also encouraged her to write from a young age.
At 16, Christie went to a school in Paris to study piano and singing. She learned to play the piano very well. But she never made music a career because of stage fright(怯場(chǎng)) .At 22,she fell in love with Archie Christie. They got married in 1914 at the beginning of World War I.
During the war,Christie wrote her first detective story; The Mysterious Affair at Styles. She chose the crime, and then invented a detective named Hercule Poirot to solve it. She sent the book to a publisher, but it was rejected.
After the war ended, Christie sent her book to more publishers and finally in 1920,one published it. She earned just $25 for it. Over the next few years,Christie wrote more books and short stories, gaining experience as a writer. In spite of her literary success, life was not go?ing well at home. In 1928 ,Archie and Agatha got a divorce. A short time later, while traveling in Baghdad, she met Max Mallowan, a young archaeologist. After getting married in 1930, they began to spend time each year in the Middle East, which provided settings for some of Christie's novels. She often wrote about what she saw and experienced.
Christie continued writing her entire life. When she died in January 1976, readers around the world mourned her death. But her tales of mystery continue to be loved by new generations of readers. Her books have sold an estimated 2 billion copies! After all,who can resist a good mystery?

You may know your mother, but how well do you really know Mother's Day? Cards, flowers, sales,TV specials, and a day off for someone who really deserves it―those are what probably come to mind for many people when they think of Mother's Day. But there's more to the story.
The earliest Mother's Day celebrations were held during spring in ancient Greece. The cele?brations honored Rhea, the Mother of the gods. During the 1600's,England celebrated a day called Mothering Sunday. On this day even servants(仆人) were given the day off to spend with their families. A mothering cake was even served with the family meal.
In the US,Mother's Day began in 1872 when Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the words to the famous song The Battle Hymn of the Republic, suggested it as a day devoted to peace. But it didn't really become popular until 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign to honor mothers. She believed that mothers could help people get over the pain they experienced during the Civil War. The US isn't alone in devoting a day to mothers. Many other countries including Denmark,Finland, Italy,Turkey, Australia, Japan, and Belgium also honor their mothers in May. Other countries honor their mothers at different times of the year.
Learning more about Mother's Day and celebrating Mother's Day are important, but probably not as important as understanding what your own mother,or grandmother,or aunt has really done for you. And that will certainly be appreciated more than one day in a year.
