Galaxy saw a man and a woman who communicated with the sign language at the train station when she was on the way home one evening. She noticed that the woman asked the man for the direction. He told her that he did not know. Galaxy decided to help them. She had learned the sign language when she served as a volunteer in the deaf and mute(聾啞)school. Then she showed the woman the direction and left her email address to them in case they needed her help later.

She received an email from that man the next day. Kazrim was his name. Galaxy replied his mail sincerely.

They both started chatting online soon after and began seeing each other. Although they only communicated with the sign language, it never bothered her.

Galaxy was fond of him gradually. Obviously, Kazrim was the same too. He presented Galaxy with a bunch of sunflowers and asked her sincerely, “Are you willing to be my girlfriend?” Galaxy was pleasantly surprised. She requested him to give her some time to persuade her parents.

As she had expected, her parents were very angry after they had learned of their love story. Galaxy explained, “Kazrim is an excellent and a very optimistic person. He has a very positive attitude towards life and work. He cares for others always. He is 100% better than the normal. Moreover, the mute is still a human. He should possess a perfect and wonderful love. ”

Her parents asked to see him, then. The very worried Galaxy took Kazrim home a few days later. When they were on the train, Kazrim told her, ‘‘I’m going to tell your parents I’ll be looking after you well with all my life!” Galaxy was deeply moved.

As soon as they had entered the house, Galaxy introduced him to her parents. She said, ‘‘This is Kazrim.” Just right after her speech, an unbelievable thing happened. Kazrim threw the gift away and held her in his arms tightly.

He said, “YOU CAN TALK?” It was the same question that Galaxy wanted to ask, too.

From my earlier memory of Mother it somehow seemed quite natural to think of her as different, nor of everyday things as Father was. In those days he was a young-looking man. He did not hesitate to make friends with children as soon as they were able to talk to him and laugh at his stories. Mother was older than he was. She must have been a woman of nearly forty, but she seemed even older. She changed little for a long time, showing no indication of growing old at all until, towards the end of her life, she suddenly became an old lady.

I was always inquisitive about Mother’s age. She never had birthdays like other people, nor did anyone else in our family. No candles were ever lit or cakes made or presents given in our house. To my friends in the street who talked delightfully about their birthday parties, I would repeat my mother’s words that such celebrations were only foolish.

“Nothing but deception,” she would say. “As though life can be marked by birthdays. It’s deeds, not years, that matter.”

Although I often repeated her words and even prided myself on not having birthdays, I once could not help asking Mother when she was born.

“I was born. I’m alive as you can see, so what more do you want to know?” she replied, so sharply that I never asked her about her age again.

In so many other ways Mother was different. Whereas all the rest of the women I knew in the neighboring hoses took pride in their housewifely abilities, their new furniture, the neat appearance of their homes, Mother regarded all those things as of little importance. Our house always looked as if we had just moved in or were about to move out.

1. How did Father impress the author?

A. He liked writing stories. B. He loved making friends.

C. He was a very young man. D. He was popular with children.

2.Before the end of her life, Mother ___________.

A. looked quite young

B. looked like an old lady

C. looked younger than she was

D. looked like a forty-year-old woman

3.What does the word “inquisitive” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. Certain B. Curious. C. Cautious. D. Confident.

4.What do we learn about Mother?

A. She was lazy. B. She was strict.

C. She was proud. D. She was special

The world shares him and London claims him, but Stratford-on-Avon intends to spend 2016 celebrating Shakespeare as their man: the bard(詩人)of Avon, who was born there in 1564, and died there 400 years ago.

Stratford remained hugely important throughout Shakespeare’s life, argues Paul Edmondson, the head of learning and research at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. "People have seen Shakespeare as a Dick Whittington figure, who turns his back on Stratford and his family, goes to London to earn his fortune and only comes back to die," he said. "But Stratford is where he bought land and property, where he kept his library, where he lived and read and thought. We are going to spend the year re-emphasizing the importance of Shakespeare, the man of Stratford."

The anniversary of the death of the most famous and the most performed playwright in the world will be marked across Britain and the globe. Macbeth is about to open in Singapore, Romeo and Juliet in Brussels. Shakespeare’s Globe is completing the first world tour, in which it has taken Hamlet to almost every country. North Korea is still holding out, though.

The Globe director recently jokily claimed Shakespeare as a true Londoner. Stratford, however, will be insisting that the town made and educated Shakespeare. "His old school room in Stratford-on-Avon where Shakespeare learned ‘small Latin and less Greek’ --as kindly laughed at by his friend Ben Johnson--will open its doors, scarred by centuries of naughty schoolboys, to mark 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death," said Paul Edmondson.

Shakespeare bought the splendid New Place, the second best house in the town, when he had made his fortune on the London stage. "You don't buy a house like New Place and not live there," Paul said. He believes that after Shakespeare bought it, all his thinking time was spent there, and that the late plays, including The Tempest, were at least planned in his library and probably written there.

1.What made people regard Shakespeare as a Dick Whittington figure?

A. His life experiences.

B. His achievements in literature.

C. His popularity in London.

D. His contributions to Stratford.

2.Where is the play Hamlet resisted?

A. In Brussels. B. In Singapore.

C. In North Korea. D. In London.

3.What can we know about New Place?

A. The Tempest was totally finished there.

B. Shakespeare learned Latin and Greek there.

C. It was completely destroyed by naughty schoolboys.

D. Shakespeare probably spent his last few years there.

4.What can be a suitable title for the text?

A. Bard of London B. Man of Stratford

C. Life of Shakespeare D. Plays of Shakespeare

Ways to Keep Your Brain Young

Every brain changes with age, and mental function changes along with it. Mental decline(下降) is common, and it is one of the most worrying consequences of aging.

1. Here are some ways that can help reduce your risk of age-related memory loss.

Get plenty of mental stimulation (激發(fā)).

Any mentally stimulating activity should help to build up your brain. 2. Experiment with things that require manual(手工的) skills as well as mental effort, such as drawing, painting and other crafts.

Get some physical exercise.

3. Animals that exercise regularly increase the number of tiny blood vessels that bring oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the brain that is responsible for thought. Exercise also stimulates the brains to become more efficient and adaptive, which means having better performance.

Avoid tobacco and too much alcohol.

Avoid tobacco in all its forms and don’t abuse (濫用) alcohol. 4. And if you use alcohol responsibly, you may actually reduce your risk of dementia(癡呆). At least five studies have linked low amounts of alcohol with a reduced risk of dementia in older adults.

Other ways.

Improve your diet and eat the right food, as good nutrition(營養(yǎng)) can help your mind as well as your body. Stay slim and keep your blood pressure low. 5. Protect your head: moderate or severe head injuries strongly increase the risk of mental decline in old age. Build social networks. Strong social ties have been associated with lower blood pressure and longer life.

A. In fact, mental decline is not unavoidable.

B. Too much drinking is a major risk factor for dementia.

C. Experts are not ready to recommend aspirin(阿司匹林) for dementia.

We can stay young forever. That is the message Dr. Shen Ziyin wants to give the world. And the Chinese doctor claims(聲稱) that he has found an answer to the problems of aging.

His solution(解決辦法) is a herbal medicine to slow the process of aging.

Dr. Shen Ziyin has been trained in Western medicine. At the same time he studied traditional Chinese medicine. And, he has been working for the past forty years to put together the best of both and find a cure for aging. He has taken a hint(線索) from the ancient Chinese medicine system called “shen”.

According to Shen, it is the kidney(腎) which adjusts the functioning of the body as well as its aging process. It is responsible for the level of activity that the human bodies go through. Studies conducted by Dr. Shen show that herbal medicine based on the shen system slow the aging process, says a report in The Telegraph newspaper.

We notice that when people grow old, they have reduced strength, loss of hair, backache, weakness in general, and wrinkles, among others. This happens because when people grow old, their bodies produce T-cells. These T-cells contain a particular substance called Fas. Fas makes the cells in the body destruct themselves.

So the only way to slow down aging is to slow the production of T-cells in the body. This can happen if people eat low calorie food. Then the body is not active enough to produce extra T-cells. But, is going hungry all the time a good price to pay for staying young?

This is where Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine comes in. But how effective it will be, only time can tell.

1.How did Dr. Shen find the solution to the problem of aging?

A. By studying Western medicine.

B. By learning traditional Chinese medicine.

C. By doing research on both Western and Chinese people.

D. By combining both Western and Chinese medicine.

2.What plays the most important role in keeping people young according to Shen?

A. People’s good kidney.

B. Medical treatment.

C. Level of people’s activity.

D. Positive life attitude.

3.The reason why people become old is that _________.

A. their bodies are unable to fight diseases

B. they have reduced strength, loss of hair

C. their bodies produce T-cells

D. they become weaker and weaker

4.We can probably learn from the passage that _________.

A. people should try to quicken the production of T-cells in the body

B. it remains unknown how effective Dr. Shen’s herbal medicine is

C. the more Chinese herbal medicine people drink, the better for health
