By far the most common difficulty in study is simple failure to get down to regular concentrated work. This difficulty is much greater for those who do not work to a plan and have no regular routine of study. Many students muddle along, doing a bit of this subject or that,as the mood takes them,or letting their set work pile up until the last possible moment.

Few students work to a set timetable. They say that if they did work out a timetable for themselves they would not keep to it,or would have to change it frequently, since they can never predict from one day to the next what their activities will be.

No doubt some students take much more kindly to a regular routine than others. There are many who shy away from a self-controlled weekly timetable, and dislike being tied down to a fixed program of work. Many able students state that they work in cycles. When they become interested in a topic they work on it attentively for three or four days at a time.On other days they avoid work completely. It has to be admitted that we do not fully understand the motivation to work. Most people over 25 years of age have become used to a work routine, and the majority of really productive workers set aside regular hours for the more important areas of their work. The “tough-minded” school of workers doesn’t fully accept the idea that good work can only be done naturally, under the influence of inspiration.

Those who believe that they need only work and study as the fit takes them have a mistaken belief either in their own talent or in the value of “freedom”.Freedom from control and discipline leads to unhappiness rather than to “self-expression” or “personality development”.Our society insists on regular habits, timekeeping and punctuality (being on time),and whether we like it or not,if we mean to make our way in society,we have to meet its demands.

1.The most widespread problem in applying oneself to study is __________ .

A. changing from one subject to another

B. the failure to keep to a set timetable of work

C. the unwillingness to work out a systematic plan

D. working on a subject only when one feels like it

2.Which of the following is TRUE?

A. Many students are not interested in using a self-controlled timetable.

B. Many students don’t like being told to study to a fixed timetable.

C. Most people over 25 years of age don’t work to a set timetable.

D. Tough-minded people agree that good work is done naturally.

3.The underlined part “as the fit takes them” means __________.

A. when they have the energy

B. when they are in the mood

C. when they feel fit

D. when they find conditions suitable

4.A suitable title for the passage might be __________.

A. Attitudes to Study

B. A Study Plan

C. The Difficulties of Studying

D. Study and Self-discipline

Research shows that the summer before college can be a dangerous time for teenagers,as they are between home and high school on the one side, and a more challenging and independent existence as a college student on the other.

Take drinking for example.Research has reported that teenagers tend to increase their alcohol use during the summer before college and in their first term.Such drinking can lead to tragedy: it's estimated that more than 1,100 college students at 18 to 24 years of age die each year from alcohol-related injuries, including car crashes, and almost 600,000 are injured under the influence of alcohol.

In addition to drinking, future freshmen may also have gaps in their knowledge about other aspects of university life.A study has found that students are “generally aware” of the fact that they have to place them into college courses and their school's curricular requirements. In addition, many students hold misunderstandings such as “Getting into college is the hardest part”,and “I can take whatever classes I want when I get to college”.In fact, students’courses may be determined by their level of preparation.

It is found that college-bound high-school graduates are faced with a number of potentially frightening tasks during the summer. For example, colleges typically require students to take placement tests(分班考試)and fill out a lot of paperwork, including housing and medical forms, over the summer.Completing these tasks may be especially frightening for low-income and first-generation college-bound students whose families may be short of experience with the college-going process.

In addition,it's only in the summer after high-school graduation when students face the reality of paying the first college bill, which often includes unexpected costs like required health insurance. For college-intending students, successfully controlling the post-high-school summer thus requires a level of finance that may be unrelated to their ability to succeed in the classroom. As a result, students who have already broken through many barriers to college admission may fail to enter college.

Paring college-bound students with “fellow advisers”---students already in college who have been trained to support and coach their learners through the summer---improves the rate at which the learners show up at college.Even more wonderful,a low-cost campaign of text messages---in which researchers sent recent high-school graduates and their parents a series of eight to ten text-message reminders of key tasks to complete over the summer---is just as effective in increasing the rate of students who successfully make the change to college.

A little “summer pushing” could be a key step in getting students all the way across the finish line.

Have you ever used Facebook? Many people are being lured (引誘) onto it with the promise of a fun, free service without realizing they're paying for it by giving up large amounts of personal information.Facebook then attempts to make money by selling their data to advertisers that want to send targeted messages.

Most Facebook users don't realize this is happening.Even if they know what the company is up to,they still have no idea what they're paying for Facebook because people don't really know what their personal data is worth.

The biggest problem, however,is that the company keeps changing the rules.Early on,you keep everything private. That was the great thing about Facebook — you could create your own little private network.Last year, the company changed its privacy rules so that many things — your city, your photo, your friends' names—were set,by default (默認(rèn)) to be shared with everyone on the Internet.

According to Facebook's vice-president Elliot Schrage, the company is simply making changes to improve its service, and if people don't share information, they have a “l(fā)ess satisfying experience”.

Some critics think this is more about Facebook looking to make more money. Its original business model, which involved selling ads and putting them at the side of the page, totally failed.Who wants to look at ads when they're online connecting with their friends?

The privacy issue has already landed Facebook in hot water in Washington. In April,Senator(議員) Charles Schumer called on Facebook to change its privacy policy. He also urged the Federal Trade Commission to set guidelines for social-networking sites.“I think the senator rightly communicated that we had not been clear about what the new products were and how people could choose to use them or not to use them,” Schrage admits.

I suspect that whatever Facebook has done so far to invade our privacy is only the beginning, which is why I'm considering deactivating(撤銷) my account.Facebook is a handy site, but I'm upset by the idea that my information is in the hands of people I don't know. That's too high a price to pay.

1.What do we learn about Facebook from the first paragraph?

A. It is a website that sends messages to targeted users.

B. It makes money by putting on advertisements.

C. It profits by selling its users'personal data.

D. It provides loads of information to its users.

2.What does the author say about most Facebook users?

A. They are reluctant to give up their personal information.

B. They don't know their personal data enriches Facebook.

C. They don't identify themselves when using the website.

D. They care very little about their personal information.

3.Why does Facebook make changes to its rules according to Elliot Schrage?

A. To provide better service to its users.

B. To follow the Federal guidelines.

C. To improve its users'connectivity.

D. To expand its scope of business.

4.Why does the author plan to cancel his Facebook account?

A. He is dissatisfied with its current service.

B. He finds many of its users untrustworthy.

C. He doesn't want his personal data abused.

D. He is upset by its frequent rule changes.
