Facebook managed to put its vast treasure trove(寶藏) of user data to good use before Friday’s tragic terror attacks in Paris. The social network customized its safety check feature let users know whether their friends and loved ones in Paris are safe.

Users in the area are being alerted(通知) by Facebook’s mobile apps, asked them whether they are safe, and offering to check on any of their friends. The app has also been sending out alerts to anyone who has friends in Paris, and Facebook’s website lets anyone check on the status and whereabouts(去向) of their friends as well as.

Most people have seen Facebook’s safety check for the first time today, and the company actually lanched it in respond to the Nepal earthquake earlier this year. At the time, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote: “When disasters happen, people need to know their loved ones are safe. It’s moments like this when being able to connect really matters.”

Facebook wasn’t the only tech company to direct reach out to its users in Paris after the terror attacks. AirBnB(空中食宿) sent its customers in Paris a email advising them staying in place and follow the directions from local authorities, and Uber(優(yōu)步) used its app to advise users “not to move if absolutely necessary.”

【題目】The defeat of Lee Sedol, the world’s strongest Go (圍棋) player, by a Google artificial intelligence (AI) program, looks like another milestone towards a world where computers can do almost anything a human can. It is not. There are uncountable things that only a human can do, and that no computer seems close to. The problem is that the purely human things are not economically useful to anyone. The things that computers can be taught to do are by contrast economically fantastic. But even the most powerful programs are not human, just as a shovel (鏟車). They have no feelings. What they have is power, but this power is growing at a rate that should frighten us all.

It might be less frightening if computers were truly intelligent, but even the most powerful networks are less human than monstrous Martians (火星人). Their power will be used to make money for the firms that finance their development, and then for others quick and clever enough to take advantage of the new world. It is far more likely that they will increase inequality and still further remove the middle classes as we move towards an hourglass (以金錢來衡量的) society in which everyone is either very rich or very poor and likely indebted.

One of the ill effects of the spread of more intelligent computer networks is, at the same time, the spread of what might be called artificial stupidity. If AI is employed largely to replace unskilled labour, it is most productive when labour is kept unskilled or redefined that way. So much of the work in service industries is now simplified until it might be automated (自動化). And robots will never need pensions. AI is slowly reducing skilled work, like some forms of medical diagnosis (診斷), at the same time, as older doctors complain that the traditional human skills of diagnosis are falling out of medical training. The belief that everything worthwhile can be measured and then managed is far more damaging to humanity than the threat of artificial intelligence on its own.

But no victory in complicated Go games can bring us closer to truly human-like computers.

【1】By mentioning the defeat of Lee Sedol, the author intends to tell us that ______.

A. computers can completely replace humans in everything

B. humans are of no practical economic values to the society

C. the power of computers is growing at a frightening rate

D. AI programs can not compare with humans economically

【2】 We can learn from Paragraph 2 that the power of computers will ______.

A. improve the quality of human life

B. promote equality at work places

C. make contributions to human development

D. widen the gap between the rich and the poor

【3】What does “artificial stupidity” in Paragragh 3 mean?

A. Unskilled workers become stupid.

B. AI discourages skilled work.

C. Computers don’t need pensions.

D. AI is ruining medical training.

【4】 What is the author’s attitude towards the future of artificial intelligence?

A. Optimistic. B. Supportive. C. Sceptical. D. Cautious.

It is hard to know what babies want. They cant talk, walk, or even point at what theyre thinking about. 【1】 And, compared to adults, they develop these skills quickly. People have a hard time learning new languages as they grow older, but infants have the ability to learn any language easily.

For a long time, scientists have tried to explain how such young children can learn complicated(復(fù)雜的) grammatical rules and sounds of a language. 2 This new information might eventually help kids with learning problems as well as adults who want to learn new languages. It might even help scientists who are trying to design computers that can communicate like people do.

Most babies go goo goo and ma ma by 6 months of age. 3 For decades, scientists have wondered how the brains of young children figure out how to communicate using language. With the help from new technologies and research strategies, scientists are now finding that babies begin life with the ability to learn any language.

They get into contact with other people, listen to what they say and watch their movements very closely. 4 Studies show that, up to about 6 months of age, babies can recognize all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world.

There are about 6,000 sounds that are spoken in languages around the globe, but not every language uses every sound. For example, while the Swedish language has 16 vowel sounds, English uses 8 vowel sounds, and Japanese uses just 5. Adults can hear only the sounds used in the languages they speak fluently. To a native Japanese speaker, for example, the letters R and L sound the same. 5

A. Children dont respond to this kind of sound.

B. Most children speak in full sentences by age 3.

C. A babys brain focuses on the most common sounds.

D. That is why they quickly master the languages they hear often.

E. So a Japanese speaker cannot tell row from low, or rake from lake.

F. Yet newborns begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking.

G. Now, researchers are knowing about whats happening in the brains of the youngest language learners.
