How to Be Successful in School

1.

One really important shortcut (捷徑) to success in life is to be successful in school. Examine the relationship between levels of educational achievement and income earned during one’s working life. Education is the best investment (投資) a person can make. The higher one’s level of education, the more income they will be likely to earn and the better life will probably be. Students should make the effort to get the most education they can, and work hard to be successful in school at every level.

2.

Long term means five years or more in the future. Do you want to graduate from college? Get into medical school? Get a law degree? Get an MBA? Get a master’s or PhD? Try to define concrete but realistic long-term goals for yourself. Then focus on them, thinking about them every time you attempt not to do your homework. Make your long-term goals motivations for your behavior every day, because every day does count when it comes to being successful in school. It is also important to have short-term goals that are stepping stones to your long-term goals.

3.

For each of your education goals, develop a strategy and an action plan. A strategy might be to get math tutoring or to study with a group of friends on a regular basis. An action plan will include several individual tasks with timing and any cost that might be required. If you are a student, start now to understand how to generate goals, strategies and action plans that work; this skill can help you to be successful in school and later, in life.

4.

Habits are formed by practice, by doing. Good study habits are formed by studying on a regular basis for the amount of time required to learn something. One of the most essential keys to being successful in school is to develop good study habits. Once good study habits are formed, you will find that learning and success in school become easier.

5.

If you are a teenager or young adult, don’t let your hormones(荷爾蒙) or other people lead you into irresponsible actions. Self-indulgent (自我放縱的) behavior and abusive behavior toward others are self-destructive and unworthy of mature individuals. Work hard to develop strong character by making the virtues of courage, temperance (節(jié)制), and justice.

The American book Who Moved My Cheese has been a bestseller all over the world. It teaches people how to face changes in their lives. Now its author Spence Johnson has written a book just for teens. The book tells us that when facing change in our lives, like a new school or new friends, don't be afraid. Instead, use this change to make a better life. The book gives an example of a change at school. A school is changing from having two terms to three terms because there are too many students.

Several teens are talking about this. Most of them are unhappy and worried. But Chris is not. He laughs and tells a story about two mice, two “l(fā)ittle people” and some cheese.

The four are in a maze looking for the cheese. Here, cheese means something important in life, like moving to a new class or getting into college. But they find the cheese is gone. The mice realize that they can’t change what has happened and have to find more cheese. This means finding different dreams. The little people, however, can’t do this. They are afraid of change so they find no cheese.

After Chris finishes the story, the friends understand one thing: to get more cheese, move in a new direction quickly. His friends understand how this can be used in the changes all teens face, such as doing well at school or having good relationships or just feeling good about yourself.
