It’s possible that people with varies social networks have diverse perceptions of themselves—as a co-worker, friend or community member. That boosts self-esteem and makes it easier to avoid stress. As a result, these people tend to stay healthier. Steal this secret: Be open to meeting new people; go to new events and reestablish old friendship.
2. _________________
Research has found that moderate exercise can improve immune function and build up resistance to colds and infections. On study of 36 overweight women, conducted at Loma Linda University, in California, found that those who walked quickly for 45 minutes 5 days a week reported half the number of days with cold symptoms during a 15-week period as their sedentary(久坐的) counterparts. Steal the secret: Aim for 40 to 45 minutes of moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or light running, at least five days a week.
3.. _________________
Numerous studies have found that writing about a difficult or painful event not only accelerates the process of coping with it, but also can improve your physical health. When people write about upsetting or distressing experiences, it helps them judge the events more sensibly, understand them better and move on. Steal the secret: set aside twenty minutes a day for three successive days to write about the things that are most important to you now and how they’re affecting you.
4.. _________________
Even small pleasures—having friends over for dinner, playing with your kids in the backyard or going to a concert—can boost your immune system. In fact, according to research at the State University of New York, positive events have a better effect on immune function than negative events. Steal this secret: Make time for yourself. Start devoting at least half an hour a day to talking to a friend, reading a book or indulging in your favorite activity. Think of it as preventive medicine.
5.. __________________
Experts know that pressure increases the chance of catching the cold. The reason? Your body’s helper—T cells, which are key to defending against viruses, become weakened when you’re worn out. Steal the secret: Do some problem-solving. First, take a hard look at the situation and really consider whether you can do anything to change things. If you conclude that you can’t change that situation, try to change your physical and emotional reactions to it. Engaging in meditation, yoga or deep-breathing exercises and listing to calming music also help relieve stress.

B.Preparing for a Hurricane
C. How Hurricanes Move
D. How Hurricanes start
E. Hurricane Names
F. Hurricane Damage
Hurricanes
Hurricanes are gigantic tropical storms that can be hundreds of kilometers wide. They bring along very strong winds and a lot of rainfall. They often cause flooding near the coasts and sea levels rise.
1. __________________________
Hurricanes are born over tropical oceans, usually during late summer and early autumn. They need two things to get them started: heat and moist air. During the summer the ocean surface heats up and warm moist air starts to rise. Cool air sinks down to replace it. This creates an area of low pressure. The rotation of the earth creates winds around the center of such a low-pressure area. In the northern hemisphere the air moves counter clockwise, in the southern part clockwise. Such a system is called a cyclone. When warm air rises, it cools and creates clouds. Soon, thunderstorms form and it starts to rain.
All hurricanes begin as cyclones but not all cyclones become storms or hurricanes. Some die out a few days after they start. They don’t have enough energy to become a hurricane. When winds are stronger than 119 km an hour a storm officially becomes a hurricane.
2. __________________________
The center of a hurricane is called the eye, a calm area with little rainfall. It is about 30 to 50 km wide. Inside the eye the sea can rise up to one meter because the air moves up. The eye wall is around the eye. This is an area of thunderstorms, rain and the strongest winds—up to 300 km an hour. Then come long bands of rain clouds that are curved towards the center of the hurricane.
3. __________________________
In the northern hemisphere hurricanes normally move in a westward direction and then they turn north and northeast. Their path takes them away from the warm tropical water of the equator. When hurricanes move over colder water or over land they lose a lot of their energy. They slow down and as time goes on, they disappear. In the southern hemisphere their path leads them to the south and southeast.
4. __________________________
When a tropical storm forms over the Caribbean Sea it gets a name. Every year the first storm of the season is given a name that starts with the letter A, the second storm gets a name starting with B and so on. Years ago only women’ s names were used for tropical storms. Today male and female names alternate –for example, the first storm is named Alexandra, the second one Billy, then Catherine etc. Each year new names are used so that you can connect a storm to a certain year.
5. __________________________
Hurricanes are causing more and more damage throughout the Gulf Region, mainly because the population is constantly growing. Many things can be done to protect yourself and your property during a hurricane: Keep emergency supplies of food and water; keep a battery-powered radio ready in case the power goes out. Listen to the instructions you get; keep the gas tank of your car full, in case you have to leave quickly; protect your house by nailing plywood over the windows and doors. Tie down loose objects; find out which roads are best to take you away from the storm; leave your house as soon as you are ordered to evacuate, etc.

A. Practice what you teach
B. Show affection and respect
C. Respect your children’s mother
D. The importance of being a good father
E. Don’t put unreasonable expectations(不合理的期望) on your children
F. Don’t put unreasonable expectations on yourself either
Being A Good Father
【小題1】____________
Research has found that children with emotionally available fathers do much better in school, relate better with teachers and generally have better peer relationships than children whose fathers are more emotionally distant. Children with fathers who are overly critical or dismissing of emotions are more likely to do poorly in school, fight more with friends and suffer poor health.
【小題2】___________
Children need to be taught right from wrong and will need to see it demonstrated by their father. Let them see you make decisions and explain to them why you came to that resolution. Tell them about life choices that you made in the past and why they did (or didn’t) work out. Teach them that it’s okay to make mistakes… everyone does; that it’s important to learn from your mistakes and try to avoid making the same mistakes over and over again.
【小題3】___________
Mutual respect is very important. Children tend to imitate the way their parents behave and how you treat your child’s mother will influence the way in which the child will view his or her own role when they themselves are married or in a relationship. Try to work as a partnership, be on the same page about how to discipline and reward your child and be consistent.
【小題4】__________
Children can have lots of pressures, from siblings to kids at school to teachers to coaches. Talk to them about their goals in life and help them set achievable ones. Never bring them down by telling them that they are not good enough but always try to boost their self-esteem and be sure to offer praise where it is due. Encourage them to meet their full potential but avoid living vicariously through them by expecting them to achieve what you had achieved or hoped to have achieved.
【小題5】__________
You are a very important part of you child’s development but many other people and things will influence their development and growth. Just as you can’t take credit for all of your child’s strengths you also shouldn’t shoulder the blame for their weaknesses.

A. Slow Down Your Life
B. Escape Now and Then
C. Separate Your Actions
D. Allow Yourself to Be Weak
E. Relieve Pressure by Firmly Saying “ No”
F. Stop Expecting Everything to Be Perfect
How to Simplify Your Life
Less is more. This is why we say: reduce things by half instead of doubling them, get rid of junk instead of piling it up, relax instead of stressing, slow down instead of speeding up.Apply these principles in your everyday life in a conscious way.You will then find yourself well along on your journey to simplification.
1.___ _______.
When you concentrate on one task, you find you have energy that you didn't even know you had.Just imagine: you are at a fair and you have to carry two heavy pigs over 100 yards. If you keep grabbing one and then the other, it will take forever, because one of them will keep slipping out from under your arm and running off.But if you tie one pig in a place, pick up the other, gather all your strength and make a dash for the finish line, pause for a moment, run back and get the other one, and with great determination, carry the second pig to the finish line, then you can be sure of success.
2.__________.
The pressure at work is on the increase in all occupations. In the modern nuclear family, the expectations that formerly would have been shared among all the relatives are now concentrated on the individual partner.
If you have the feeling that 24 hours per day are not enough for all the things you need to do, then it’s not because the day has too few hours, but because you have too many activities.A simple fact that overloaded people often tend to forget. The solution is equally simple: refuse to accept so many work assignments in your private life or your working life.
3. ______.
“I can handle stress” is regarded as a positive statement in the world of work.People who can handle stress are given more and more to cope with — until one day they break.
Pay careful attention to the signs that tell you that you are under more stress than you can cope with. These signals came from various areas of life. You become ill, or your work efficiency decreases.
If you have any of these symptoms, change your life goals and decrease your tolerance of stress.Say quite openly, "I can't manage that."
4. _____.
"If only I were slimmer, more beautiful, richer, cleverer, then I would be happier." This is a dream that makes a lot of people ill, depressed, and unhappy.Life has its flaws, defects, comets, and edges.Only those who accept this reality can lead a really full life.
Of course there are activities in which errors are dangerous; driving a car, crossing the road. But life doesn't consist entirely of these things. In among them there is a lot of room for small and large mistakes.
5.___________.
Successful people all have their own places where they can withdraw in order to work.Find out which places improve your creativity. For me it's the train. When I know that I'm going to be traveling for four hours without phone calls and people knocking on my door, I find my mind is free and I can read or write complex articles. There can be problems working on the train, of course: if the person sitting opposite you keeps talking away, or if train trips make you tired (some people fall asleep after a few miles).

A. Explore All Your Talents
B. Be Ready for the Up-coming Competition
C. Set a Down-to-Earth Goal
D. Prepare Yourself Emotionally
E. Look for a Competitive College
F. Consider Talent Search Programs in Junior High
Many aspects of college planning are the same for most college-bound students. However, if you’re in any academically gifted and talented program, you have additional things to think about. Here are some actions you should consider.
66.______
Talent search programs provide educational opportunities for seventh-and eighth-graders who are mathematically or verbally talented. Some of these programs use SAT scores to identify academically gifted students. Although most students take the SAT in junior or senior year of high school, gifted and talented student often take it earlier.
67. ______
Many gifted students have the potential to succeed in multiple academic areas. Don't miss opportunities by focusing too early on one that you excel in; carefully examine all your strengths and interests. Discover what you really like to study and the topics you may want to pursue in college. Pursue your interest and passion for learning to the fullest extent possible while you’re still in high school.
68. ______
Gifted students often feel that they have to be accepted by very competitive colleges to be considered successful. And while a competitive college may be the right place for you, don’t let selectivity be the only factor. The most important aspect of college planning is finding a college that’s a good fit.
69. ______
Many gifted students are used to being at the top of their junior high and high school classes. Be prepared to meet other gifted students in college — students who do just as well as you, or better, in the classroom. It can be unsettling. Handle it by staying focused on your own studies and skills and aiming to do your personal best.
70. ______
Although your academic qualifications and abilities may exceed those of your high school classmates, your age is the same as theirs. High school is a time for adolescence, while college requires emotional maturity. A 15-year-old high school graduate may not be prepared to live on a campus 1,000 miles from home with other students who are 18 and older. Think about what you are ready for emotionally, as well as academically, when you’re narrowing down your college list.
