The Japanese like parties. From ancient times, a party becomes enlivened (活潑) when someone starts singing and others keep applauding.Having such a custom, the Japanese can easily sing in front of others without feeling embarrassed. This seems to be one of the reasons that karaoke has been largely accepted in Japanese society.
It is now widely recognized that the use of karaoke started at a snack bar in Kobe City, one of the three biggest cities in Japan. It is said that when a guitarist could not come to perform at the bar due to illness, the owner of the bar prepared tapes of accompaniment recordings, and people enjoyed singing to the tapes.
It was at that time that karaoke appeared.Holding a microphone and singing a song to the accompaniment of an “orchestra (管弦樂隊)”, you can feel like a professional singer. For soldiers living in a stressful society, there is no other entertainment activity that can make them feel so refreshed.
It is a typical way to relax for Japanese businessmen. They use it to take away their stress after work. However, there is an obstacle to this: since most Japanese houses are still made of wood, it would be very annoying to the neighbors to sing into a microphone at night.Seizing upon the opportunity, businessmen created the karaoke box, a roadside facility containing karaoke equipment.Karaoke boxes are soundproofed rooms, closed with a door, placed on roadsides where people can sing. The first “Karaoke box” was placed in a rice camp in the countryside in 1984.It was built from a converted freight car (改裝的貨運車).Now, the karaoke boom has even spread abroad and it has also been attracting the attention of the countries trying to improve their literacy rate (識字率) as a good educational tool.

“America’s No.1 Health Problem.” So reads the headline of an article published by the American Institute of Stress that claims the biggest threat to health today is neither cancer nor AIDS. The report says: “It has been estimated(估計)that 75 to 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress related problems.”
It is no exaggeration(夸張)to say that people today are being attacked by stress. According to the National Consumers League, “Work is the top source of stress for adults who have problems and stress in their lives (39%), followed by family (30%). Other sources include health (10%), concern about the economy (9%) and concern about international conflict and terrorism (4%).”
However, stress is hardly unique to the United States. A British survey in 2005 estimated that “over half a million individuals in Britain believed in 2004 that they were experiencing work-related stress at a level that was making them ill.” As a result of “work-related stress, depression or anxiety,” there are “an estimated thirteen and a half million reported lost working days per year in Britain.”
The picture is no less bleak in mainland Europe. According to the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work, “work-related stress has been shown to affect millions of European workers across all types of employment sectors.” One survey revealed that there are “about 41 million workers affected by work-related stress each year.”
What about Asia? A report issued by a conference held in Tokyo concluded: “Job stress is a common concern among many countries in the world, both developing and industrialized countries.” The report observed that “several countries in East Asia, including China and Korea, have rapidly industrialized and economically grown. These countries now have a lot of concerns on job stress and its harmful effects on workers’ health.”

It’s the place where smart people make smart machines work even smarter. It’s also in the heart of sunny California, a great place to start a family and raise kids. What could be better?
But something is happening to their children. Up until the age of two they develop normally. But then everything seems to go backwards. The children become lock into their own small world, unable to communicate at all.
They call it the “curse(詛咒) of Silicon Valley,” but the medical name for the condition is autism(自閉癥). It used to be thought that autism was a kind of mental illness. Now doctors are sure that it is a neurological disease transmitted genetically. It seems that the people leading the communications revolution are having children who cannot communicate at all.
But even the parents have trouble communicating. Asperger’s Syndrome is a mild version of autism. People who have it are highly intelligent and often brilliant with numbers or system but have no social skill. This very combination of symptoms makes Asperger’s sufferers into ideal computer professionals.
The Asperger’s sufferer has always been a well-known figure in popular culture. He or she was the eccentric but dedicated scholar or the strange uncle or auntie who never married. But the high numbers of such people in Silicon Valley mean that they can meet others who understand them and share their interests. And while they might not be personally attractive, they can earn truly attractive amounts of money. They can get married and have kids. Unfortunately, many of the children of two Asperger’s parents seem to be developing serious autism.
There is little anyone can do. It takes hours of work just to make autistic child realize that anyone else exists. And there is no cure in sight. Some argue that no cure should be found. “It may be that autistics are essentially different from normal people, but that these differences make them invaluable for the evolution of the human race,” says Dr. Kirk Whilhelmsen of the University of California. “To eliminate the genes for autism could be disastrous.
It seems that the children of Silicon Valley are paying the price of genius.
1.What does Dr Kirk Whilhelmsen think of autism?
A. It is disastrous to society.
B. It is not completely a bad thing.
C. It is a punishment to those working in Silicon Valley.
D. People with autism should never marry.
2.Why do people call autism “curse of Silicon Valley”?
A. Because autistic people live in Silicon Valley.
B. Because many people working in Silicon Valley have autism children.
C. Because people with autism will be driven out of Silicon Valley.
D. Because people with autism are not personally attractive and not liked by others.
3.What can we know about Asperger’s Syndrome according to the passage?
A. Asperger’s sufferers are ideal computer professionals.
B. Asperger’s sufferers never get married and have children.
C. Asperger’s sufferers are ashamed of themselves and locked into their own world.
D. Asperger’s sufferers can be beneficial to society if they are cured.
