Have you felt that you are out of style, either in language,or in ways of expending,or in songs,or even in food and clothing? A kind of culture comes into your life and the world quietly or on a large scale. It has been said that yesterday's cultural icons are on the ash heap today and what's "in" today will be "out" tomorrow. 1 But practically speaking, how does one find time to keep up with all of the trends and changes that take place? I suggest not wasting all of your energy trying!
Allow me to explain. The adolescent years has always been about the process of individuation, separating from parents and becoming an independent adult. Over the past 50 years, youth culture has become more easily identifiable. 2 This makes it difficult for the average parents to keep up. Yet,whatever forms today's youth culture takes,it is important to remember that adolescents use youth culture to express that process―nothing more and nothing less.
Reading a good book on youth culture, periodically thumbing through a magazine marketed to teens or occasionally watching an hour of television programs aimed at teens are all worthy endeavors to keep up with today's youth culture. 3 It is an organization that does an excellent job of watching global youth culture trends that most parents would find difficult to track by themselves.
While keeping track of trends in youth culture throughout the country and the world is good parenting practices, you are supposed to approach them. 4 For instance,it may become trendy on the east coasts for teenage guys to wear Capri pants, but it could also be a trend that never makes it to Sioux Falls. So,if you happen to live in a place that is less trendy by nature,I would not advise that parents spend time preparing against the " Great Capri Pant Invasion". 5
A. So don't let the speeding changes make you lose the directions.
B. Still, changes within youth culture itself are rapid.
C. Keeping up with what's going on at your kids' school just down the road is the most important and practical thing to do.
D. Another great resource is the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding.
E. The youth culture nearly takes the leading part in the gap between young and old.
F. It is wise for parents to be students of youth culture.
G. You should also know what youth culture matters most to you and your kids.

Newspapers and websites are two major new medium in the world today, both of them can provide us with lots of news and information. But they're different in some way.
Newspapers enjoy a longer history and often come out daily with more reliable news and information. They can be carried and read almost somewhere you like. So many people like reading them. But they can only contain texts and photos.
On the other hand, websites are quite new and popular, specially among young people. Websites have not only texts with pictures but also audios and videos, they make stories more interested. What's more, they are updated from time to time. So late news is always seen on websites. And it is not quite convenient for people without a computer is connected to the Internet to get information from websites.

A shopkeeper once found that a bag money had been stolen from his shop. He went to the judge and tell him about his loss. The judge ordered all the people of the shop to come before them. He took a large amount of sticks of equal length and gave one stick to each person. Then he said, "Come after me again tomorrow. I'll then know which of you are the thief because the stick given to a thief will be one inch longer than the others. " The next day,the people came to the judge, and he found one stick was more shorter than any of the other. Of course, the person which had the shortest stick was the thief.

I strongly believe that it is rather important to be a good listener. And although I have become a better listener than I was ten years ago,1 Effective listening is more than simply avoiding the bad habit of interrupting others while they are speaking or finishing their sentences. It's being content to listen to the entire thought of someone rather than waiting impatiently for your chance to respond. In some ways, the way we fail to listen is symbolic of the way we live. 2 It's almost like our goal is to have no time gaps between the conclusion of the sentences of the person we are speaking with and the beginning of our own. My wife and I were recently at a cafe having lunch, eavesdropping (偷聽) on the conversations around us. 3 Instead they were taking turns not listening to one another. I asked my wife if I still did the same thing. With a smile on her face she said, "Only sometimes."Slowing down your responses and becoming a better listener aids you in becoming a more peaceful person.
4 If you think about it,you'll notice that it takes an enormous amount of energy and is very stressful to be sitting at the edge of your seat trying to guess what the person in front of you(or on the telephone) is going to say so that you can fire back your response. But as you wait for the person you are communicating with to finish,as you simply listen more singlemindedly to what is being said, you'll notice that the pressure you feel is off. You'll immediately feel more relaxed, and so will the people you are talking to. 5 Not only will becoming a better listener make you a more patient person,it will also enhance the quality of your relationships. Everyone loves to talk to someone who truly listens to what they are saying.
A. Communication begins with good listening skills.
B. It takes pressure from you.
C. We often treat communication as if it were a race.
D. It seemed that no one was really listening to one another.
E. I have to admit I'm still only an adequate listener.
F. They will feel safe in slowing down their own responses because they won't feel in competition with you for "air time"!
G. Everyone has different ways of listening and expressing themselves.

In many countries,it has long been a tradition to hold a annual tree or forest festival. The origin of such celebrations date back to ancient times. However,Arbor Day,as it is common known today,is of American origin and evolved from conditions peculiar to the Great Plains. It was first observed at Nebraska in 1872. The idea was created by J. S. Morton,a member of the Nebraska State Board of Agriculture, one of the country's forest conservation organization. It was a move to promote replanting, and to plant up treeless areas. The idea has spreaded widely to other lands which it is variously celebrated the "Festival of Trees"―" Greening Week" in Japan, "The New Year's Days of Trees" in Israel, "The Treeloving Week" in Korea, "The Students' Planting Day" in Iceland or "The National Festival of Tree Planting" in India. Arbor Day in their various forms is now celebrated in more than fifty countries.

Sometimes, you'd better use pen and paper than open up your mouth to convey just the right emotion. Margaret Shepherd, author of The Art of Civilized Conversation, shares these proper occasions.
* Condolences (吊唁) At first, everything is a blur (模糊不清) for the bereaved (死者的親友) so it's comforting to have notes to read later at their own pace. I For instance, "I know you're going to be busy with family right now,but in a few weeks,Fm going to call you so we can have coffee together."Then do it.
* 2 An apology is easier to put on paper―you're calmer and you can choose better words and take more care with what you say. Apologize very clearly and don't use weasel words (推諉詞) like "I'm sorry if you were upset by me." 3
* Praises If you compliment people to their face, they often feel they should be modest, but a written note can be savored (品味) in private. For example, "I really appreciate your patience as I learn to stop drinking."
氺 4
A request to work on a campaign, help out a fundraiser―put them all on paper to avoid putting people on the spot.
* Thank You Most of us think we're covered if we've verbally thanked someone or sent an email, but if the person put effort into a gathering or a gift, you should put effort into making a thankyou note. I am strongly agreed that people should hand write a thankyou note for a hand cooked dinner rather than call the next day and talk about how fun it was. They just saw you the night before!5
A. And remember to use your pen instead of words always.
B. Finish with something appreciative, such as "Thanks for putting up with me."
