Are you a volcano lover? Here is a list of some of the world's most beautiful volcanoes that our travel agency can offer you to visit. Don't miss them!
Mount Mayon, the Philippines
Located about 450 km southeast of Manila on the island of Luzon, Mount Mayon is the most active volcano in the Philippines; a September 2014 eruption forced thousands to flee the area. Those who hike the volcano are rewarded with views of the towns in the Albay province and the Pacific Ocean. But even those who prefer the view from a distance have a historical good point at the Cagsawa Ruins, once an 18th Century Franciscan church that was destroyed by an 1814 eruption.
Kilauea and Marina Kea, Hawaii
Hawaii's volcanoes are known for their active eruptions and extraordinary scenes. Mauna Kea is around one million years old, while Kilauea is the youngest volcano in Hawaii and has been erupting continuously since 1983. The lava falls straight into the sea, creating fantastic forms of black rocks and smoke clouds.
Mount Kelimutu, Indonesia
Kelimutu's three mysterious crater lakes attract both scientists and tourists to the island of Flores in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province. One is emerald green, another dark red, and the third pitch black. Scientists say the lakes take on such colors because the volcanic gases met the lakes' minerals centuries ago.
1.People who hike Mount Mayon can enjoy the following EXCEPT ______.
A. views of the towns in the Albay province
B. views of the Pacific Ocean
C. views of the Cagsawa Ruins
D. views of Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province
2.According to the text, Kilauea_____________________.
A. is an active volcano

D. forced thousands to flee in 2014

Tu Youyou, 84, honored with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on Oct 5, 2015. She was the first Chinese citizen to win a Nobel Prize in science for her work in helping to create an anti-malaria(瘧疾) medicine.
In 1967, Communist leader Mao Zedong decided there was an urgent national need to find a cure for malaria. At the time, malaria spread by mosquitoes was killing Chinese soldiers fighting Americans in the jungles of northern Vietnam. A secret research unit was formed to find a cure for the illness. Two years later, Tu Youyou was instructed to become the new head of Mission 523. Researchers in Mission523 pored over ancient books to find historical methods of fighting malaria. When she started her search for an anti-malarial drug, over 240,000 compounds(化合物) around the world had already been tested, without any success.
Finally, the team found a brief reference to one substance, sweet wormwood(青蒿), which had been used to treat malaria in China around 400 AD. The team isolated one active compound in wormwood, artemisinin(青蒿素), which appeared to battle malaria-friendly parasites(寄生蟲). The team then tested extracts(提取物) of the compound but nothing was effective until Tu Youyou returned to the original ancient text. After another careful reading, she improved the drug recipe one final time, heating the extract without allowing it to reach boiling point.
After the drug showed promising results in mice and monkeys, Tu volunteered to be the first human recipient of the new drug. “As the head of the research group, I had the responsibility.” she explained.
1.When did Ms. Tu start her malaria research?
A. When she was 84 years old
B. After she entered “Mission 523”.

A. The process of testing extracts of the compound is very smooth.
B. No one had ever done any research on it before Tu and her team.

D. Heating the extract until it reaches boiling point is necessary.

閱讀下面短文,并按照題目要求用英語回答問題。
When I was growing up,I was embarrassed to be seen with my father. He was severely lame and very short, and when we would walk together, his hand on my arm for balance, people would stare.I would feel ashamed at the unwanted attention. If he ever noticed or was bothered,he never let on,nor did he say anything about it.
It was difficult to coordinate(協(xié)調(diào)) our steps—his pausing,my impatience—and because of that,we didn’t say much as we went along. But as we started out,he always said,“You set the pace,I will try to adjust to you.”
Our usual walk was to or from the subway, which was how he got to work.He went to work sick, and despite bad weather. He almost never missed a day,and would make it to the office even if others could not.A matter of pride.
When snow or ice was on the ground,it was impossible for him to walk, even with help.At such times my sisters or I would pull him through the streets of Brooklyn,NY,on a child’s sleigh to the subway entrance.Once there,he would grasp the handrail until he reached the lower steps that the warmer tunnel air kept ice-free.In Manhattan the subway station was the basement of his office building, and he would not have to go outside until we met him in Brooklyn on his way home.
When I think of it now,I wondered at how much courage it must have taken for a grown man to subject himself to such indignity and stress. And at how he did it—without bitterness or complaint.
He never talked about himself as an object of pity, nor did he show any envy of the more fortunate or able. What he looked for in others was a “good heart”,and if he found one,the owner was good enough for him.
Now that I am older,I believe that is a proper standard by which to judge people, even though I still don’t know precisely what a “good heart” is.But I know the times I don’t have one myself.
My father has been gone many years now,but I think of him often.I wonder if he sensed my unwillingness to be seen with him during our walks. If he did,I am sorry I never told him how sorry I was,how unworthy I was,how I regretted it.I think of him when I complain about incident, when I am envious of another’s good fortune, when I don’t have a “good heart”.
At such times I put my hand on his arm to regain my balance, and say,“You set the pace,I will try to adjust to you.”
