Congratulations! You are about to start a multi-faceted(多面的) journey of exploration. You are about to enter high school as a freshman. And here are some tips on how to start a new year at a new school.
As a high school freshman, choose courses that suit you. I encourage you to take a few courses with the title “Honors”, because they are meant to be challenging and intellectually exciting. If you are hungering for knowledge, see if you can take Advanced Placement (AP) course(大學(xué)預(yù)修課)---courses that may allow students to earn college credit(學(xué)分) for performing satisfactorily in the AP exams held nationally every May. AP classes such as AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography are well-known for being easy, so taking either of them would be a perfect way of getting yourself into the AP program deeply.
Try to find a balance between in-school activities and out-of-school activities. An imbalance will surely cause you to be stressed. If you love sports, consider trying out for the various sports teams your school offers. Exercise is a great way to stay in shape, learn proper time management, gain new friendships, and keep your mind away from school day stress. Also consider joining your school’s band or some other clubs your school offers. Most importantly, be a part of activities that you are fond of.
If you’re a high achieving student, you’re probably asking yourself, “ What should I do to get into a top college?” The truth is that when most colleges judge your college application, they don’t focus on your freshman year grades or extracurricular activities. Freshman year of high school is supposed to be a time of exploration—a time to find out your favorites and to develop them in the future. However, the method to apply to (申請(qǐng))colleges is sometimes confusing, so you would benefit yourself by at least knowing the types of standardized tests you need to take before applying to college. The best resource for this is “ The College Board”, the company that creates the college entrance exams you will take in the future.
Your high school experiences will undoubtedly be very important to you. It is the last step before you begin your life as an adult. Freshman year of high school is the time to make your interests and activities to fit who you are. As a freshman, challenge yourself in and out of classroom. Stay positive , work hard and remember to have fun!

Edward Snowden—the fugitive (逃亡者) former U.S.intelligence employee —appears to be stuck in Moscow, unable to leave without a valid American passport, according to interviews Sunday with two men who had sought to aid him: WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange and Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa.
Snowden, 30, arrived at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo International Airport last weekend, after previously taking refuge in Hong Kong. Moscow was only supposed to be a stopover.WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy organization, had said Snowden was headed on to Ecuador—whose president has been critical of the United States — and that he would seek asylum there.
Now, however, both men said Snowden is unable to leave.
"The United States, by canceling his passport, has left him for the moment trapped in Russia," said Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, on ABC ' s " This Week With George Stephanopoulos". The United States canceled Snowden' s passport last weekend. Assange criticized the United States, saying: " To take a passport from a young man in a difficult situation like that is a disgusting action."
President Correa spoke to the Associated Press in Puerto Viejo, Ecuador. For now, he told the AP, Snowden was "under the care of the Russian authorities. "
"This is the decision of Russian authorities. He doesn't have a passport. I don't know the Russian laws, I don' t know if he can leave the airport, but I understand that he can' t," Correa said. He said that the case was now out of Ecuador' s hands. "If Snowden arrives at an Ecuadoran Embassy, we' 11 analyze his request for asylum."
Snowden traveled from Hong Kong to Moscow on his U.S.passport. Although the U.S.had already revoked it, Hong Kong authorities said they hadn’t received the official request to cancel the passport before Snowden left.
An official at the Ecuadoran Embassy in London had also issued a letter of safe passage for Snowden. But Snowden apparently did not use it for his trip to Moscow.
And it doesn’t appear that the Ecuadoran government would make a similar gesture again.
On Sunday, Correa told the AP that an Ecuadoran official at that embassy had committed "a serious error" by issuing the first letter without consulting officials back home. Correa said the consul would be punished, although he didn’t specify how.
Correa' s tone seemed to have shifted after a conversation with Vice President Biden on Friday.Where Correa had earlier been aggressive and determined, he now voiced respect for U.S.legal procedures.
1.Edward Snowden is a person who once worked in a federal department ______.
A.to assist the governor of one state
B.to collect information secretly for the US
C.to organize overseas promotion campaign
D.to educate intelligence employees
2.Which of the following word can take the place of the underlined word in Para.2 ?
A.shelter. B.praise. C.position. D.forgiveness.
3.By what means did Edward Snowden leave Hong Kong for Moscow' s Sheremetyevo International Airport?
A.A letter of safe passage from the Ecuadoran Embassy.
B.Permission from Chinese government
C.Invitation of the Russian authorities.
D.An American passport.
4.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Edward Snowden will live in Moscow forever.
B.Ecuadoran government will provide Edward Snowden protection.
C.Through U.S.legal procedures Edward Snowden has been caught.
D.Correa hesitated to assist Edward Snowden.

NEW YORK (AP) — The investigation into the disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz has gone through decades and countries, from basements to rooftops and seemingly everywhere in between.
No one has ever been charged criminally — and the little boy with sandy brown hair and a toothy grin was declared dead in 2001.
This week, the six-year-old boy who went missing from the Soho area of New York City in 1979 is back in the news. Police and the FBI are investigating a possible lead into the 33-year-old case of Etan Patz, the first missing child to appear on the side of a milk box.
The child disappeared on the way to school on the morning of May 25, 1979. It was the first time he was allowed to walk the two blocks to the bus stop alone.
A tip seemed to have led officials to the basement of a building on the corner of Prince and Wooster streets, about a block and a half from where Etan had lived with his family.
The name Etan Patz has become a hot topic on Twitter as people weigh in on the case. Shirley Brady noted: “As mom to a 6 years old in Soho, it’s still held out by locals as cautionary tale (警示故事).” Another wrote, “Boy who disappeared on his way to school in 1979 has been REOPENED! Crazy.” One wondered, “Why is FBI and NYPD searching for a kid that disappeared in 1979?”
Good question. This is a case that Stuart Gra Bois, as an assistant U.S. lawyer under Rudolph Giuliani, followed for years. It became the most famous missing-person case in New York City, turned a nationwide spotlight on missing children, and created headlines around the globe. No one was ever stated guilty of the crime.
The case led to the creation of National Missing Children’s Day, marked on May 25, the day the blond-haired, blue-eyed child went missing.
The case has even pointed to a suspect, charged with child molester (猥褻者) Julio Antonio Ramos, who is currently in prison. Patz’s babysitter had been dating the man, and Ramos did know the kid, but has denied taking him away.
New evidence in the case suggests another suspect who lived in the apartment at the time: a local handyman named Othniel Miller, who gave Etan $1 for helping him the night before the disappearance.
The man’s name had come up in an earlier investigation, but he was a friend of the Patz family, and the NYPD did not follow the lead.
Investigators plan to be at the site, 127 B Prince St., which is now a Lucky Brand jeans store, for the next two to three days to search for human remains. The Associated Press reports that the excavation (挖掘) has been the result of a recently ordered review of the case by Manhattan’s police.
1.We can learn from the first three paragraphs that ________.
A.The 6-year-old missing boy was found by the side of a milk box
B.Police and the FBI have not been following the case of Etan Patz for 33 years
C.The investigation into the disappearance of boy has worked fruitlessly for decades
D.Etan Patz went missing from the Soho area of New York city in 1979 and died in 2001
2.What does the underlined phrase “weigh in on the case” mean?
A.ignore the case B.feel stressed on the case
C.reopen the case D.begin to discuss the case
3.What was a possible cause of reopening the case of Etan Patz?
A.Local lawyers strongly demanded the reopening of the case.
B.The Associated Press reported the result of the review of the case.
C.New evidence appeared which led officials to the basement of a building.
D.Local people realized the importance of the case without criminal being charged.
4.Which of the following statements is true in the text?
A.The National Missing Children’s Day was created on May 25, 1979.
B.The search for human remains will be carried out at 127 B Prince Street.
C.The NYPD didn’t follow the lead of Julio Antonio for he had been dating Patz’ babysitter.
D.Othniel Miller, a local handyman assisted Etan and gave him $1 before the disappearance.
5.We can learn from the passage that ________.
A.People air the same view about the case on the Internet
B.People reject the reopening of the case of the missing boy
C.The missing-person case still has a long-lasting influence on people
D.Twitter is the only place for people to discuss about missing-person cases
