There was a sweet smell of incense (香) in the air as the well?muscled man moved his legs into a position well behind his head.It was something that the human body really should not be able to do.But what else would you expect at the First World Yoga Championships?

On September 25,the world’s leading yoga experts arrived in the US to find out who was the best. But the real prize was to turn yoga into a proper Olympic event.

“Yoga is a combination of bodybuilding,Miss World,Mr Universe and gymnastics,” said championship organizer Bikram Choudhury.“There are some 70 people from more than 20 countries competing in this event. Why not have yoga at the Olympics?”

The public cannot decide whether or not Choudhury’s dream will come true. But he is right about one thing:yoga has become popular with young and old people all over the world. In the US alone,15 million people practise yoga.Everyone is at it,including Madonna and Ricky Martin.

Yoga started in India more than 5,000 years ago.The name means “to join together”.That is to bring the body and mind together into one pleasing experience. The whole system of yoga is built on three things:exercise, breathing and meditation (沉思).

The yoga that we know today is mostly physical yoga. It’s seen as a type of exercise, but is different from sports like football or running. When we do yoga,we move our body into positions that stretch the muscles and joints, making them stronger.

One of the best things about yoga is the fact that everyone can do it.To women,it means a flat stomach, more shapely legs and a graceful body.To men,it is a way of becoming stronger and more athletic.

There are also specially?designed yoga classes for pregnant women or children suffering from mental disabilities, such as autism (孤獨(dú)癥).As for teenagers, meditation and simple breathing exercises can help them learn to calm down, relax and concentrate better. But teenagers under 16 are not supposed to do the body exercises as it could have a bad effect on their natural growth.

How can you help kids cope with (對(duì)付)stress? Proper rest and good nutrition can improve coping skills, so can good parenting. Make time for your kids each day. Whether they need to talk with you or just be in the same room with you, make yourself available.

Even as kids get older, quality time is important. It’s really hard for some people to come home after a tiring day of work, get down on the floor, and play with their kids or just talk to them about their day -- especially if they’ve had a stressful day themselves. But expressing interest in your kids shows that they’ re important to you.

Help your child deal with stress by talking about what may be causing it. Together, you can come up with a few solutions. For example, he should cut back on after-school activities, spending more time talking with his parents or teachers, developing an exercise plan or keeping a journal.

You can also help by predicting potentially stressful situations and preparing kids for them. For example, let a child know ahead of time, but not too far ahead of time, that a doctor’s appointment is coming up and talk about what will happen there. Keep in mind, though, that younger kids probably won’t need too much advance preparation. Too much information can cause more stress.

Remember that some level of stress is normal, Let kids know that it’s OK to feel angry, scared, lonely, or anxious and that other people share those feelings, too.

When kids can’t or won’t discuss these problems, try talking about your own concerns. This shows that you’re willing to handle tough topics and are available to talk with when they’re ready. If a child shows symptoms that concern you and is unwilling to talk, consult a counselor (顧問)or other mental health experts.

Most parents have the skills to cope with their children’s stress. The time to seek professional attention is when any change in behavior continues to exist, when stress is causing serious anxiety, or when the behavior is causing significant problems in functioning at school or at home.

1.What is the purpose of the text?

A. To share the author’s ideas on proper parenting.

B. To persuade parents to spend more time with their kids.

C. To advise parents how to help their kids deal with stress.

D. To seek different ways to help solve kids’ problems.

2.Why do some parents feel it difficult to spare quality time for their kids?

A. Their kids are growing so fast. B. They have too much housework.

C. Their kids are losing interest in them. D. They are tired out after work.

3.You are advised not to talk too much about a stressful situation in advance because ________.

A. it does no good to your kids B. it doesn’t work in practice

C. your kids may not feel stressed D. your kids don’t want to listen

4.What can we learn from the text?

A. Normal people share the same feelings.

B. It is normal for kids to have some stress.

C. Kids should get rid of the negative feelings.

D. Everybody feels angry, scared, lonely or anxious.

讀寫任務(wù) (共1小題,滿分25分)閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。

Drunk driving, a major concern currently, is not a funny thing, which has killed many people and ruined the lives of many others. At present, traffic accidents become "the world's first harm".

Two months ago, after drinking a lot of alcohol, my friend's uncle drove the car home. He was heavily drunk, but he still drove home by himself. On the road near his home, an old lady was going across the road, but his uncle didn't notice her and he was still moving on under the influence of alcohol. And the old lady didn't see his uncle, either. In the end, the lady died. Later, a blood test showed the alcohol in every 100 cc of his uncle's blood had reached 175.7 mg, indicating he was seriously drunk.

Had it not been for his uncle's drunkenness, the terrible accident would not have happened. If the lady hadn't died, she would live a happy life with her daughters and sons. And his uncle's home was also destroyed by his uncle. Therefore, two families were destroyed.

I wish more people could realize the seriousness of drunk driving and obey the traffic regulations faithfully. Always remember: refuse to drink and drive, and give a safe world to you and me!
