【題目】Writing an article for your school newspaper can be exciting and rewarding, especially when you proudly see your name in print.
Decide on a topic.【1】If you plan to write a news article for a monthly newspaper, you will need to take into consideration whether the topic will be relevant before printing. To get ideas for stories, listen to your fellow students and find out what has them talking. Follow developments within your school and community to get information on what would interest your readers.
Do your research. There is an old saying in law that a good lawyer never asks a question that they don’t know the answer to. 【2】 To sum up, the more, the better.
Attract the readers with a lead. As the beginning of a newspaper story, a lead has to be direct, but it does not mean you don’t need to entertain the reader as well. 【3】Your lead must be short, but it must also state as many of the essential parts of you story as possible.
Consider the 5 Ws and H. These are the meat and potatoes of your news articles. You article must answer all of these questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. Once you have answered these things, you can feel confident. 【4】
Write, edit, rewrite and repeat as necessary. So, much about having a successful final product is about being willing to spend time and effort in editing and reviewing process. 【5】After that, make changes as a result. Having taken some useful suggestions, you are to make your article readable not only for their content, but also for their quality.
A. Think about what is happening on campus.
B. You have effectively informed your readers.
C. Get them interested with an interesting beginning.
D. Do not be afraid to accept positive comments.

【題目】The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert(警覺). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝視)starts to lose its focus--until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?
Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同樣地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.
【1】The experiment described in Paragraph 1 is related to the baby’s .
A. sense of hearing B. sense of sight
C. sense of touch D. sense of smell
【2】Babies are sensitive to the change in _______.
A. the size of cards B. the colour of pictures
C. the shape of patterns D. the number of objects
【3】Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?
A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment.
B. To see how babies recognize sounds.
C. To carry their experiment further.
D. To keep the babes interest.
【4】Where does this text probably come from?
A. Science fiction. B. Children’s literature.
C. An advertisement. D. A science report.

【題目】Almost one in five drivers had dozed off behind the wheel, a shocking news report had showed. Of those who were dozing off, 29% have done so with their cars speeding at 70 miles per hour. The report also found a quarter of men have fallen asleep while driving, making it almost twice as many as women.
The Safety on Wheel Report, by Post Office Insurance, also looked at how often tiredness or a lack of concentration caused accidents. Three in ten drivers have experienced an accident, from passing a walker crossing to hitting another vehicle, because of a lack of concentration. Meanwhile, almost half (49%) of UK drivers have driven when they do not concentrate.
Paul Havenhand, head of insurance at Post Office, said, “ When tiredness strikes, drivers should avoid the roads.” There is no measurement for tired driving, unlike driving under the influence of alcohol, yet it could result in an equally dangerous accident.
Drivers are advised to take a 15-minute break from driving every two hours. However, a third (36%) are so eager to reach their destination that they will ignore feelings of tiredness. What’s more, almost one in five (18%) will drive for longer than four hours without a break, while 6% carry on for up to 6 hours. Just over a quarter (27%) choose a quick stop to buy a cup of coffee, which is a very popular way for drivers to get rid of tiredness, and only 17% stop to have a rest until they feel energetic again. Mr. Havenhand added, “Drivers should plan ahead and rest before starting a long journey; besides, they can take regular breaks to recharge their batteries while on road; in some cases, if they do feel too tired to concentrate on the roads, they could consider an alternative means of transport.”
【1】Which suggestion is NOT put forward by Mr. Havenhand?
A. Preparing well for a long journey and taking a complete rest before it.
B. Having breaks regularly in order to feel refreshed.
C Choosing another method of transport instead.
D. Choosing a quick stop to grab something to eat.

A. Put a new supply of electricity into their batteries.

【3】It is implied in the last paragraph that for drivers the most popular cure for tiredness is _____.
A. drinking coffee
B. talking with others
C. ignoring feelings of tiredness
D. singing songs
【4】What’s the purpose of the writer in writing this passage?
A. To warn people of the danger of tired driving
B. To tell people to be careful when walking on the street
C. To inform people of the importance of a good rest
D. To introduce some dangers while driving on the roads

【題目】Why play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules… planning your next move…acting as a team member…These are all “game” ideas that you will come across throughout your life.
Think about some of the games you played as a young child, such as rope-jumping and hide-and-seek. Such games are entertaining and fun. But perhaps more importantly, they translate life into exciting dramas that teach children some of the basic rules they will be expected to follow the rest of their lives, such an taking turns and cooperating(合作).
Many children’s games have a practical side. Children around the world play games that prepare them for work they will do as grown-ups. For instance, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones, which sharpens the hand-eye coordination(協(xié)調(diào))needed in hunting.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The most famous games of all, the Olympic Games, bring athletes from around the world together to take part in friendly competition. People who watch the event wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for an entire country, not just the athlete who earned it. For countries experiencing natural disasters or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also an event that unites people. Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. People on all continents play it—some for fun and some for a living. Nicolette Iribarne, a Californian soccer player, has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He created a foundation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a promising future.
Next time you play your favorite game or sport, think about why you enjoy it, what skills are needed, and whether these skills will help you in other aspects of your life.

【題目】“Clothes-swapping” has become an increasing popular activity for women in the United States. The women can give away unwanted clothing at a clothes swap event and get something different in return.
Recently about 300 women went to a clothes swap at a high school in Springfield, Virginia. It was the largest crowd ever for the area’s popular clothing-swap group.
Daphne Steinberg was having a very good day. “For anyone who knows Ann Taylor LOFT,Ann Taylor is a really nice women’s designer and I’ll totally wear this to work. So I love that, I love that I can equip myself for work, have a good time in doing it, not totally bankrupt myself. ”
Kim Pratt organized the clothing-swapping event in Springfield. She also organized a money-raising activity for the high school’s debate team. It’s one of several ways that her group gives to charitable causes. Another is by donating all of the “un-swapped” clothing to shelters for victims of domestic violence.
