Mark Twain said that “habit is habit, and not to be flung(扔) out the window by anyone, but coaxed (勸誘)downstairs a step at a time.” The chances of successfully changing negative behavior        when you make gradual changes that give you time to        negative patterns for positive ones.
On any given day, countless numbers of us get out of bed and        to begin to change a given behavior “today.” Whether it be exercising more, drinking less, managing time        or some other change in a negative behavior, we start out with high       . In a short time, however, a vast majority of people fail and are soon doing        it was they thought they shouldn't be doing.
After considerable research, some researchers believe that behavior changes usually do not        if they start with the change itself.       , they believe that we must        a series of “stages” to adequately prepare ourselves for that        change. Once you have analyzed all the factors that        what you do, you must decide which behavior-change technique will work best for you.
According to the psychologist Albert Ellis, most        problems and related behaviors arise from irrational (不理性的) statements that people make to        when events in their lives are different from what they would like them to be. For example, suppose alter doing        on an exam, you say to yourself, “I can't believe I failed that easy exam, I’m so stupid.” By changing this irrational “catastrophic” self-talk into rational,        statements about what is really going on, you can increase the        that positive behaviors will occur.
Positive self-talk might be        as follows: “I really didn’t study enough for the exam. I just need to prepare for the next       .”
Such self-talk will help you to recover quickly from        and take positive steps to correct the situation. Some other technique like purposefully        or stopping negative thoughts and refusing to dwell on(沉湎于) negative images can also spare you wasted energy, time and emotional resources and move on to positive changes.

Some people think that success is only for those with talent or those who grow up in the right family, and others believe that success mostly comes down to luck.I'm not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don't come into play because they do.Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that's just the reality of how life is.
However,to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And,in addition to that,in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practising. To become great at certain things,it'll require even more time, time that most people won't put in.

This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don't enjoy what you do,it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it.

When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It's sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there's a huge chance that you're wrong anyway.
Whatever you do,if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time.If you're not willing to put in the time and work, don't expect to receive any rewards.Consistent, hard work won't guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into.

In a cab, a woman seemed in such a hurry. She constantly rushed the cab driver to drive quickly. She was so absorbed in her own thoughts of getting to the airport as soon as possible that she was not aware they were going by a different route.
All of a sudden, a young man got inside the cab.He took her handbag in which she had put her visa, passport, and all the money for the trip.
The cab driver, who was in collusion with the robber, left her in the exactly middle of a dark street. She thought that she was rather unfortunate in the very situation.
During the very night, she was told a piece of shocking news.Tears came down her cheek.Flight 360, the plane that she should have got on board, had crashed.Had she not lost her important belongings, she could surely have lost the thing far more precious——her life.
Sometimes bad things really happen. There are times when nothing seems to go our way.So what should we do about it? We must get rid of all these frustrations and start all over again in the faith that we will get what we deserve.
Don’t waste your time and energy on things that can’t be changed.Continuous worrying will only affect your health and you’ll be doing much more damage than what was previously done.
What if it was the other way round? What if we never ran out of good luck?
There was a man who won the lottery. He became greedy and wasted all his money on everything he could get his hands on.
But when he one day made it to the front page of the newspaper again, it was a different story. He had been killed because of his riches. If you attain good luck, you can never be too secure about it.Life is so unpredictable. You never know what will happen next.
Live one day at a time.We sometimes subject ourselves to unnecessary emotional trouble. But please don’t forget: sometimes misfortune can be the source of happiness.Live for the moment.Do what must be done for the present and the future will turn out just fine.Believe me.And believe in yourself. As Captain Planet always says, “The power is yours!”

A letter of reply is sometimes a most treasured thing. Here is a story that tells about this common and natural human sentiment
The busiest woman in Labrador during one bitter cold Christmas not very long ago, was an Australian nurse by the naI11e of Kate Austen. But Nurse Austen was not too busy to acknowledge with a long, friendly letter every gift of food or clothing received for distribution to the natives in that cold and poor district of the north. Among the gifts was a box of knittings for children, knitted(編織)and sent by a woman in Toronto.
Nurse Austen was busy, exhausted and not feeling too well that winter. She could have written just ordinary routine notes of acknowledgement. But that was not her way. She sat down and wrote the woman in Toronto a real letter telling all about the village, and the names of the children who were wearing the knitted gloves and caps, and what they said -when they got them, and how they looked when they wore them. She wanted the woman who had knitted and sent all those lovely knittings "to see how much happiness and warmth she had created." Not long after, she received the following answer from Canada.
Dear Miss Austen:
Your letter made me happy. I did not expect such a full return. I am eighty years old, and I am blind. There is little I can do except knit, and that is why I knit so many caps and sweaters and scarves.Of course I cannot write this, so my daughter-in-law is doing it for me.She also sewed the seams and made the buttonholes for the knitted things.
I know something of the work you are doing. At the age of nineteen I married a man who was going to China to be a missionary(傳教士). For forty years, with an occasional year at home in America, we Worked in China, and during that time our two sons and a daughter were born to us, of whom only one son survives.\After forty years, my husband's health began to fail. We returned to the States where he took charge of a settlement house in Brooklyn, New York. A surprising number of the problems we faced there were similar to the problems we had met in China. When my husband died, I came to Toronto to live with my son and daughter-in-law. They are very good to me, and I pride myself that I am little trouble to them, though it is hard for a blind old lady to be sure of anything.
What I most want to say, my dear, is this. For sixty years I have been making up missionary packages of such clothing or food or medicine or books as I could collect. In various parts of the world and to various parts of the world I have sent them.Sometimes I have received a printed note of acknowledgement from the headquarters depot or mission board, sometimes nothing.Occasionally I :have been informed that my contribution was planned for Syria or Armenia or the upper Yangtze. But never before in all that time have l had a personal letter picturing the village and telling me who is wearing the clothing and what they said.I did not suppose that ever in my lifetime I should receive a letter like that.
May God bless you.
Sincerely yours,

科目:高中英語(yǔ) 來(lái)源:不詳 題型:閱讀理解

There is a problem each of us faces in following advice on emotional healing: apologizing is difficult. We are trapped in what we think of ourselves by holding onto our pride. We can be selfish and not willing to admit our most obvious mistakes. Pride eats away at us as we argue or ignore the mistake.
It's happened to me. I have had too much pride and selfishness to apologize to a loved one I hurt. When I did want to apologize, I couldn't bring myself to face the other person. This is the pride I'm talking about. Maybe apologies come difficult for men because they're expected to be dominant. It's like the joke that a man never asks for directions when lost. Ladies are more emotionally open than guys and are willing to express it. Still, both genders wonder how to correctly apologize.
In shifting the focus on apologizing away from you, what does not apologizing do to other people? They feel hurt that you are not willing to communicate your mistake. They lose trust in you as you hide behind your mistake avoiding reality. They become angry with you, wondering why you do not tell them the truth. They may begin to counter your lack of apologies by not apologizing themselves and from this the relationship goes downhill as the two of you get caught in a power struggle.
You need to communicate your mistakes. A mistake you made is like a scratch and by not apologizing you are making the scratch a deeper wound and rubbing salt into it. You need to stop hurting the other person and yourself by learning to apologize. There is real power in apologizing and emotional healing.
小題1:Why are men more unwilling to make apologies?
A.They don't intend to hurt other people.
B.They expect others to forgive them.
C.They don't want to be considered weak.
D.They aren't good at expressing themselves.
小題2:What bad effect will there be if you refuse to apologize for your mistakes?
A.Other people won't pay attention to you.
B.You will lose confidence in yourself.
C.You won't be forgiven even if you tell the truth.
D.The friendship will get hurt and go worse.
小題3:From the last paragraph, it can be inferred that              .
A.communication can stop you making mistakes
B.mistakes would turn into deeper scratches
C.a(chǎn)pologizing is good for you and other people
D.a(chǎn)pologizing is the most powerful in emotional healing
